Adam being shaken down by JW. The actor plays it straight, like a black hood given a hard time by a white cop in the blaxploitation era. Why I like Adam.
Critics and material I don't need. I haven't changed my act in 53 years.
JW is in the film to provide balance. Without him, all the white characters (James, Felix, Solitaire) are heroes. JW isn't a villain, but he is a fool.
Similarly, Strutter and Quarrel are heroes and other black characters (Kananga, Tee-Hee, etc) are villains.

Yes, he's often overshadowed by the more flamboyant characters.

That's one take. To me, it seems like they had this long boat sequence planned out and all of the stunts pre-visualized and they realized that they needed some comedy interspersed in there to appeal to those viewers who weren't impressed by excessive stunts.
Sure, but the black/white angle was more important at the time
Sorry to keep repeating this... but Hamilton/Mankiewicz made Bond *fun* in the 71-74 period. Though admittedly I'm biased because it's with their three Bond movies, at that time, that I came 'in'.

David Hedison gets scenes in the franchise with both JW and Sanchez in LTK... Did ever one performer in the franchise achieve such extreme tonal elasticity?

Good point.

Reminds me slightly of Hammer's 'The Devil Rides Out'. Christopher Lee or one of his confederates looking on at a Satanic ritual (presided over by Charles Gray) with a view to breaking it up.

Love it!
Something they did in TWINE and CR-06 too. Makes the music more organic to the whole film.

Newman should have taken a leaf out of the approach of these other, more Bondian 'not-Barry' composers (Martin, Hamlisch and Arnold).

Good point.
Oh don’t get Me started on that subject! Newman is a cut and paste philostine!
Doesn’t know one end of a Bond score from the other!
My sentiments exactly
So true )
I love that film. Hammer at its best
