The whole scene with Bond in clown costume is just brilliant. The costume engages the whole idea of Moore's Bond since LALD - the joker in the pack - but it goes beyond that. Moore plays the scene with total dramatic conviction. In the final shot of him in the costume looking around for Octopussy he seems to have a clown's pathos too.

Moore's Bond making sparing use of a machine gun in the stair rail stunt. Brosnan would have shot up the whole palace with it for at least ten minutes.

I think the practical stunt work in this film is exemplary, with special note to the train sequence and fighting on the outside of the plane. In the past I've speculated that they may have particularly wanted to raise their stunt game on this film in order to compete with Raiders of the Lost Ark.
I like how this film has three different spectacles in its final act... the clown/circus drama, Octopussy's girls' raid, and then the aerial stuff... each one substantial.

Moore is wonderful in this, genuinely acting.
The villains are a colourful bunch.
John Barry unfortunately is on auto-pilot, which is still pretty good and better than many who would follow
And there is some authentic Fleming content, always a plus.
