I always like when we have to figure out from pictures how the prop may have worked or imagine which mechanism are hidden inside. That's when we go one step further!

You are correct. I just used my imagination and dove into my junk parts box and used whatever I thought would look interesting inside the sphere. There are two magnets inside that hold the top on when it is displayed with the covering. --Ed

Ah okay cool. I always thought it was just a lump of solid plutonium in the film, not a device as such? Don't they sort of melt it down to put into the rods he puts into the submarine reactor at the end of the movie?
