Let's spend the US presidential election night doing something fun and constructive together! ajb007/biggrin
The origional plan was to watch The Guns of Navarone, but we decided to celebrate sir Sean Connery's life and movies by watching DN together instead! :007) !
Everyone is invited! If youre not familiar with the consept I'll try to explain it: We start watching at the same time, regardless of witch time zone we're in. We'll comment on what's going on as if we were sitting in the same living room, eating pizza and drinking [insert your beverage of choise] together. We will comment on the thread you're in now.

PLEASE KEEP IN MIND THAT WE ARE ALL STARTING 10 MINUTES LATER !

The 19:00 deadline is set so that everybody has enough time to find their DVDs/Blu Rays, boot their players and get ready for playing the movie
WE ARE STARTING PRECISELY AT 19:10

- Please make sure that everybody has their BluRay/DVD/VCR ready and start the player latest 19:00 GMT to get done with all the dodgy menus.
- PAUSE YOUR PLAYER

    Since this film was made years before "Casino Royale" (no, not that one) we can have a glimpse of how David Niven might have been as a more serious 007. He's younger here than Connery was in NSNA and Moore was in ... most of his films.

    I haven't thought of it that way before.
    BTW; I posted the question if any special operations involved mountain climbing on a history forum. No-one could think of any examples, but we know many special forces units were trained in climbing.

    I'm not a huge fan of the genre anyway but I personally prefer war films of the 50s to war films of the 60s. Fifties war movies often have a quasi-documentary gloss and emphasise old-fashioned heroism, whereas during the 60s the genre veers towards a new wave of violence and revenge fantasy, sometimes abandoning claims to historical veracity and riffing instead on contemporary cultural concerns. As I remember it, 'The Guns Of Navarone' (1961) is uneasily at a transitional point between these types of movie, whereas 'The Longest Day', a year later, has its feet more firmly back in the 50s camp. The last two war films I watched were 'The Desert Fox' (1951) and 'The Desert Rats' (1953), an enjoyable double bill about decency and the military code of honour. James Mason plays a sympathetic Rommel in both, and Richard Burton gives a muscular, dynamic performance in the latter, a world away from his jaded cynicism amidst the carnage of 'Where Eagles Dare' (1968).

    I was thinking of us all watching DN. I was thinking of tonight or tomorrow but didn't think that was too realistic at such short notice. I would be ok with Tuesday if everyone else is and only if N24 is, as he has spent some time on organising a time for TGON.

    If it's a switch to DN on Tuesday I'll try and join you for at least part of it. I'll keep an eye on this anyway and I wish all well for the viewing session :-)

    Re: war movies. Perhaps for another time, but Sean Connery - who, like Gert Frobe, had been cast in a small part in 'The Longest Day' (1962) - returned to the star-studded 'true story' genre of epic war films for Richard Attenborough's 'A Bridge Too Far' (1977), playing Major-General Urquhart in one of the more memorable performances of the movie. Connery's Urquhart is a traditional hero (like Bond) but with an engaging touch of vulnerability (he's a commander of the airborne division who's afraid of heights!), and he's shown bravely enduring a military defeat explained in the film as a tragic consequence of shortcomings by back-room planners at home: that sense of thwarted heroism interestingly reflected Connery's real-life exasperation (about which he often went public) with any 'big shots' in the film industry he regarded as incompetent or as letting the side down. Also: 'Battle Of Britain' (1969) was another war movie in that star-studded 'true story' strand of the genre: missing Connery, but with his friend Michael Caine on form, plus Robert Shaw; with Guy Hamilton directing and Harry Saltzman co-producing.

    If we change Tuesday's movie to DN, are there any members in adition to those who origionally signed on for Navarone who will join us in watching DN? If I change the plans it has to be done tonight or tomorrow morining at the latest, so swift/quick/hasty/rapid/speedy feedback is apriciated.

    I may have read your timings wrong with 'summer time', however please check to make sure.

    There will be no difference between Paris time and UK time. UK time moved to GMT last week!

    I cannot join in as I will be at my work.
