The tarantula scene in the film is very good (I like Norman's music too) but can't quite match the terror conveyed by Fleming's description of the centipede in the novel
Gotta say I was raised on films with back projection and for me it never spoils the excitement.
I agree it doesn't spoil anything necessarily, but I'd have loved to see the Sunbeam Alpine sliding under that crane/machine in a wide shot rather than as a dodgy rear projection.
The killing of Professor Dent is another classic Bond scene that they nailed in this first film...but again, like in the Boothroyd scene, they give Bond the wrong pistol - it's an FN Browning 1910 this time.
Terence Young certainly ensured that he worked in the sadism as well as the sex and snobbery. The cold-blooded shooting of Dent really establishes Connery's toughness and Bond's capacity for brutality. It's a scene that helps give weight to the film.
Critics and material I don't need. I haven't changed my act in 53 years.

Agreed.
Norman's playful orchestral stabs as Bond bashes the spider... was to become a staple of Barry's action scoring
horrible image
especially looking like he does.

He tastes it too by the looks of it.
I think the brief scenes between Connery and Zena Marshall are the most dangerously sexy in the entire series.
Cars in American movies (and Bond) are incredibly flamable ) )

I'd actually forgotten she was in the novel until I re-read it this time last year.
This and Luciana Paluzzi in TB for sure
