    I went there back in 2002. It really does look like something out of a James Bond film - by that I mean it's genuinely startling and surely, you tell yourself, this is out of a sci-fi writer's imagination.
    Its decline rather hints at the inability of the US to maintain its space exploration and research program without the assistance, financial or scientific, from other nations.

    Crikey. Glad they closed it down before that happened. A shame, but in technology terms, it was a bit of a pensioner.
