Daniel's hairstyle as 007

I know this has been a topic of conversation before on the James Bond forums. But what preference do people have out of Craig's 5 films? For me, it's Quantum of Solace (which is a shame as it's Daniel's worst movie)

Quantum-Cut-Scene-Grey-Suit.jpg

SF was cool, but probably just a little too short. It was close to a buzz cut

Curious to get people's thoughts on Craig's hair in the below photos from Casino Royale. It always bugged me how quiffed it was. But looking back on it now, I don't really mind it. I'm getting kinda OCD going through CR and seeing how his hairstyle seems to change from scene-to-scene throughout.

I wish they styled his hair like this during the casino scenes. The more classical look would have suited those sequences. This photo was taken a few months after CR wrapped in 2006 at the MTV Europe Music Awards.

He's peak James Bond for me looks-wise whenever he has the Connery-esque side part. Sadly he only has it styled like that when he's in a dinner jacket in SF, SP and NTTD. Beyond that I think he looked his best with the SF haircut though I know most dont like it.

I agree, Skyfall was too short. Quantum or even Spectre were probably the best in my opinion. As for Casino, we could have hard worse considering the styles of the early 2000's.

Well I always thought his hair in Layer Cake and generally from that period was perfect. Perhaps in retrospect it's actually a bit of a mixture of the same style from CR and QOS. But I have very find memories of that look.

Very good photos of Craig there from Walther p99!! I understand that segment was filmed around the time that Spectre came out. I'm surprised they didn't go with this look. Perhaps during the Morocco sequences. Interested that you mention the side-parting that Craig uses during the tuxedo scenes in SF to NTTD. What do you make of his hair in the tuxedo during CR?

He obviously looks great there as that's what the moment is about. His CR, SP and now NTTD hairstyles though all blend together for me sans the side-parted bits. They're just basic looking haircuts.

I'm surprised to see QoS mentioned a number of times. For me, that's the worst haircut. Mostly because DC is at that exact age where your looks transition from being a "younger person" to "person in their 40s." I can't quite put my finger on exactly what looks off about it but I know it's related to that age bracket pivot.

Or maybe it's because they attempted a style for someone with fuller hair? Dunno.

Well...a lot of my imprinted memory when I think about rather than watch QoS is the journey to Mathis's retirement villa...on the Riva speedboat, hair just long enough to flick in the wind. There's a timeless glamour in that whole sequence and it's slightly more 'spy in the world of the rich and powerful' than active duty military cut that we see at other points.

    but horses for courses.

I know what you mean — especially his London scenes and arriving in Bolivia. He looks great with it mussed during the finale, though.

SF was...inelegant. Bond in a near crewcut.

SP I don't recall, which says something, I guess.

I prefer the CR look when all is said and done. My vote might change after NTTD though.
  • LuciusNightmareLuciusNightmare Posts: 264MI6 Agent
I'm not sure 'inelegant' would be the word that comes to mind for SF. It was rougher, tougher and a little more 'bad boy.' Personally, I thought it looked quite cool on occasion. Quite the departure from the usual Bond style, but Daniel still looked good. Generally speaking, I prefer Craig's hair when it's flatter hence why I think the SF hair is good, as it looks short and neat

Certainly the SF haircut fit the story = Bond as the old dog. The tailored clothing softens it a bit in your photos, but the look has such a rough air, as you said. It's more of a military contractor vibe than a suave, secret agent. I got a kick out of the Macau casino scene because he barely had enough hair to put in product.

How long would you say are his sides + top in CR?

Always loved that haircut but the barber always seems to leave the top too long and the sides too short... :#

CR is probably still my favourite. I think that haircut will look good in 100 years.

Despite being so different, I find it very difficult to choose my second favourite between SF and QoS. I think both were successful at reinventing and refreshing the established look from CR. The edge just goes to SF for having the balls to commit to such a radical change. The shortness makes him look 10 years older, and at times throughout the film, like a totally different man than in QoS . But it really works on both style and storytelling levels. Whilst the SF haircut may sacrifice some elegance, I believe it is Craig's Bond's most masculine look.

I get the criticism towards the QoS cut, I see it, but it still really works for me and looks great. I couldn't imagine that film with a different cut.

The Spectre haircut is by far the worst for me. I don't think its bad, just lackluster. Like many creative in decisions Spectre, I think they just fell back on something that worked in the past, with little extra thought.
The SP haircut is clearly going for the CR look, but Craig's hairline had changed quite a bit between 2006 and 2015, so it doesn't look quite right. I really think they missed an opportunity to reinvent his haircut again, as a result it feels stale.

In CR through SF, Craig had a tapered back cut. In Spectre he had a rounded back cut. I think it made him appear less lean and somewhat more stout.

The NTTD cut looks great so far. In terms of solid haircuts that any man can wear, it might come out on top!

For what its worth my barber remembered when SF came out men were asking for that haircut "all day long", while he has no real memory of giving any other Craig Bond hairstyle.

I always thought the quiff look best suited Craig at the Baftas in 2007 (when he was nominated for Best Actor for CR no less).

It's quite similar to his hair in the train sequence with Vesper. Which I always thought looked neater.

Always loved Daniel's hair and look during the CR documentary. He just looked perfectly suited as a modern Bond. His spiky hair mixed with the more elegant three-piece is a cool look.

To my eye, this look reminds me of the style he had on the train with vesper. Do people agree? Also, intrigued to know where that suit below is from. Would have preferred Daniel referred it over the Brioni in the film. Which felt a little staid and conventional.

I think QOS is the only Bond film Craig looks really good in, particularly due to his hair.

I always hated the buzz cut in Skyfall, and I’ve thought that longer, messier hair would have fit the story better than the military cut he maintains. He can’t be bothered to shave his face, but buzzing his head is manageable? And the spiky hair in CR doesn’t seem right for the character, but it does go with the immature character of the time. I preferred his hair at his 2005 announcement, though it was a bit sloppy. That hair would have worked for Skyfall.

You're right, it would make a nice change to have that style for at least one film. Instead, they went with that incredibly short style for one film. Which made for a very interesting departure. Though perhaps, it was a little too short in hindsight. I guess they were trying to sell that uber masculine, no-nonsense alpha male look.

But it was closer to John McClane or even Phil Mitchell

Looking at it, I think Daniel had just had a haircut for the exteriors of the Istanbul scenes. His hair is simply too short here.

    craig.jpg

However, he looked stunning with the shorter hair matched with the stubble. I kinda wish they kept that look for the entirety of the film. The stubble wasn't really that noticeable, so they could have got away with it still being an elegant look.

Found this interesting picture and quote from Zoe Tahir talking about the logic behind the decision. She's posted a lot on her Instagram that this is her favourite look of Craig has Bond...

Well it is Global James Bond Day !!!Let me first say this picture was published in The Bond on set book .. and as interesting as I like to keep my page , privacy is what keeps me working .... so many of my photos will never be posted here ... however this one is available in any good book shop [sic] Now that said .. I know it looks like I’m having a martini , but instead we’re just sharing a sober laugh in between takes on #skyfall . Photo taken by @gregwilliamsphotography from the #bondonset book #filming #skyfall . I remember having one of my first meetings with director Sam Mendes and wanting him to buy this short crew cut look for Daniel ... “ can you get three looks out of it “ he asked me . “ Rugged Bond , Classic Bond and Casino Bond .... “Yes “ I said .... not sure I could but determined to make it work ... I was super happy with how it turned out , especially the sharp side part we put in for the casino and the texture we managed to create with such little length on top for his rugged scenes .... Happy Global James Bond Day Everone !!! #jamesbond #007 #danielcraig #barbering #barbershop #hairdresser #film #onset #pinewoodstudios #casino #bond #actors #shakennotstirred #global #day #barbergirl #barnet #barbergirls #croptop #croptops #cut #haircut #mensstyleguide #mensfashion #menshair #menshaircut #menswear

I think it might've worked better in Skyfall is his hair was only longer in the PTS. Because then he was still the cool, young 007. Then the shot in Turkey and his weeks there made him a bit lazy, so short hair was the way to go for the character. Of course the rest all happens in 3 or 4 days, so it would't be a problem if it was this short the rest of the film. Just natural.

Its such a marginal difference, almost not even worth asking IMO. That said I think CR looks slightly better, the shorter sides make it a bit tidier.

You think so? It's noticeably more bouffant-y in the CR photo. It actually looks like Craig coping Brosnan in that shot. I don't mind either, I probably prefer Layer Cake, because it's closer to Craig's usual style.

I suppose, the most noticeable departure from Craig's hair was SF. Which deliberately went with the mean, shaved look. The more I think about it, the more this look is my favourite. It's sexy and has a 'bad boy' quality. It's far from conventional and is just more edgy.

What colour was Daniel's hair in his Bond films? When I think about it generally, his hair was blonde. But if you look at photos, it actually varied considerable. I think a lot has to do with the camera filters, the sets, location, lighting, etc. Nonetheless, my take is:

    (1) CR: Blonde/brown
    (2) QOS: Golden brown/brown
    (3) SF: Blonde
    (4) SP: Blonde
    (5) NTTD: Brown/Grey

Was Daniel a bit ginger in some scenes in QOS....(It's probably just the lighting and camera filter. Nevertheless, these are two of the sexiest images in his tenure as 007)
