Alternative to T&A Casino Royale dinner shirt?

DB6DB6 EnglandPosts: 1,196MI6 Agent

Does anyone know of a good alternative to the Turnbull & Asser dinner shirt from Casino Royale?

I tried a search on the forum and on Iconic Alternatives but didn’t see anything.

Grateful if anyone can point me to a decent alternative!

That’s a tough one given collar shape, fabric and cuffs, is it a budget alternative you are looking for?

That's what I'm thinking having searched online!

It doesn't have to be exact of course and little more budget than the £295 is the aim!

The most challenging part seems to be the fabric. So many formal shirts have a bib front whereas the T&A shirt is the same fabric throughout.

It's a waffle weave fabric, which looks similar to but performs very differently from the marcella fabric used for a bib. As an alternative, white royal oxford can easily pass for it. It's technically much different from the waffle weave, but visually it's similar. Regular oxford and pinpoint oxford are very different and sportier, but royal oxford is a great alternative.

The really challenging thing is finding a shirtmaker who knows how to replicate the kind of fly front on the shirt. Other English shirtmakers do this kind of fly front, but I've never seen anyone else do it.

Thanks Matt - I appreciate your informed view and expertise! I have seen one online shirtmaker offering royal Oxford cloth as an option and also a hidden button placket so may experiment with that option. If it comes anywhere close to the T&A price wise I’ll go with the original!

I went and got one fitted when they were doing the tie deal a few years ago, it’s crazy money for a shirt I hardly wear but it is absolutely the most stunning shirt I own and such a nice fit, plus I have the suit, shoes, braces and cufflinks so well worth it to complete an iconic outfit.

    Nice work!

As I no longer wear black tie regularly (my Army days are well behind me) I don’t want to spend huge amounts. I’m looking to balance the various pieces for overall affect. I’ll wear C&J shoes, probably a less expensive suit but I suspect the shirt and tie will make a difference

So if you’re just looking for a close enough I recommend this one, until I get one made from close enough fabric or order the turnbull and asser shirt (unlikely) I’m more than happy with it. The quality is very good for the price and it has a lot of the details, combine it with these cufflinks from Magnoli and you’re set.

Thanks for the Amazon link - certainly looks like a ‘close enough’ and very budget friendly alternative!

I like Charles Tyrwhitt quite a bit. Their shirts are some of the best off-the-peg shirts I own. They aren’t to the T&A level, but they are wonderful! Be aware they ship from the UK so give yourself some time if ordering from them. Here is a good option, in my opinion.
