What was Q's overall history with MI6?

We see Q do a great job of running the gadget department of MI6 from 1965 to 1999!! We can assume he worked with other operatives long before 007, and that he worked with others besides 007.Do we ever find out exactly which other operatives he provided gadgets for? And why didn't his gadgets do a better job of protecting the lives of other 00 agents the way his gadgets saved 007 ??
After all, without the gadgets Bond would have been dead many times over!! Thanks be to Q!!

We see Q running the department (it's called "Q Branch") even earlier than 1965.
Yes, we do find out which other operatives he provided gadgets for.
And yes, without the gadgets Bond would have been dead many times over. Q himself said as much.
Speaking of Q, one assumes that Q and his immediate successors were highly trained and experienced veterans, and yet when it came to choosing a new Q in Skyfall the writers decided to go with someone who was essentially a kid, probably not even 30 years old?! And even if young Q had been a great genius, how would someone with such little experience earn the role that the older operatives who became Q had had over a period of many years??
