@Marker me too. Without meaning to divert this discussion, I suggest that things started to go along those lines after the critical and commercial success of CR led Eon to believe they could quest for such masterpieces regularly.

I think the Bond films have followed cinema trends through the ages…possibly with the exception of Dr.No, which led the way…the films got bigger and bolder as the Spy Craze caught on…then we had the excess through the 1970’s, with the ‘nod and a wink’ Moore films as the comedy and spectacle ramped up…then the slightly more ‘grounded’ movies through the latter Moore and then Dalton…Brosnan fell between the two as people wanted more enjoyable/entertainment movies again…then it was in vogue for more ‘realistic’ action movies with a ‘character arc’ across several films…and now…? Apart from a Bond movie every 3 years - who knows? I think it’s gotten very fragmented..🤔
I think they would've had more success with making masterpieces if they didn't try to hang everything in the Craig era on Casino Royale, instead the more CR thing to do would be to make episodic-type films but each have meaty stories, characters and emotional arcs.

If you look at my signature (my bond film rankings) it is pretty clear that I tend to prefer the more episodic romps than the "masterpieces". So you can imagine how frustrated I am lol. To each their own, but for me, bond films don't have to try to be masterpieces in order to be enjoyable for me. Though I definitely enjoy every bond movie to some extent (except CR '67)
I've never seen CR '67 in its entirety. They were showing it on TV recently and I caught the last twenty minutes or so, TBF it looked quite entertaining.

It is bonkers and probably not objectively good, but something new and crazy pops up every couple of minutes which makes it completely watchable. Definitely worth a watch, but you have to put any thoughts of James Bond out of your head- it's nothing to do with that!

Eon is an apt name for the production company, as that's what it takes to make a Bond film.

Still 2 years away from production. Yikes. This is far too long between Bonds. Especially considering how long it's actually been since NTTD filmed.
