I just picked up a pair of adidas Jogger. In the absence of the adidas Gazelle 2 from Skyfall, which may or may not do a re-run, I saw, quite by accident, that '80s Casuals' are now stocking a very similar shoe.

Great alternative! This link should do it.
Check out the Adidas Spezial. They can be found being sold on ebay, not sure if they are being sold in any official web store elsewhere. Search "Adidas Spezial Navy" in the ebay search or just click adidas spezial navy | eBay. Aside from some slight aesthetic differences between the shoe models, the core feel is the same with the navy suede color with pale blue stripes. However the soles are gum rather than white and the tongue is suede.
I'm toying with the thought about using the appropriate paint to change the gum soles into white soles, but I'll probably just leave well enough alone.
I wouldn't try and paint the soles. You can do the best job possible, and they'll still end up cracking and flaking (learned this from experience). It would be easier to buy a regular pair of navy Gazelles and paint the stripes and heel with Angelus leather paint. You can prep that material to make it more porous so there's a much better chance the paint with stay on, even with the flexing.
Or, like you said, find a pair of Spezials and just live with the gum sole.
Just my 2 cents! Cheers!
Yeah that's a good point. The sole does put up with a lot of cyclic stress from the bending it goes through during walking and scraping into things.
I just bought the Spezials and they are very nice as they are. In fact, I prefer these to the Gazelle's. That tongue was a bit too large and hideous, and the white sole doesn't work as well as these. From a distance they look exactly like the Skyfall trainers, but are a much improved version, IMO.
Oh yeah I bought it too and am happy with how they are as well. I consider them close enough to where I no longer feel the need to keep an eye out for the Skyfall Gazelle 2 anymore. Thanks for the comparison as well
