"When her secret finds its way out..." Spoilers
“When her secret finds its way out, it’ll be the death of you”- Blofeld
This line is made much of in the trailers. Blofeld says it in his one and only scene with Bond in NTTD before he unexpectedly dies.
So, what was he on about? It can’t be that Madeleine is, as is said in the film, “a daughter of Spectre”. Bond knows this already- he knew she was Mr White’s daughter before he even met her and it was the reason why he met her.
Therefore it must be that she has had Bond’s child. This was indeed a secret from Bond, and a life-changing one for him. This however has happened to an awful lot of men. While it certainly does (or should) change a man’s life, it doesn’t mean his death. It might mean that he has to quit his job, or M will make him quit it, since having a family is a severe drawback in his line of work (open for blackmail, for example) but that means a new job, not death.
So, apart from a teasing line in a trailer, what’s the purpose of this? Is Blofeld simply, as he was prone to, messing with Bonds head? Trying to imply that Madeleine has been a traitor to Bond all along?

I think that Bond finding out he had a daughter would mean that not only would his priority be protecting her, potentially at the cost of his own life, but also that protecting her would take his focus off getting the job done and leave him vulnerable. Ultimately, saving his family led him to his death so Blofeld’s statement rang true.
He’s referring to his daughter for sure. And Bond having to change and adapt to family life surely would be the death of him. He’s an adrenaline junkie who craves for danger and life on the edge. Family life isn’t Bond at all. I think people are looking too much into that line and literally think he means the death of a Bond. Blofeld is being far more personal than that.
Well, that's brothers for you- they always know which buttons to push.
I’m not sure there was any secret. Blofeld in the last two films was a poor baddie and definitely not a clairvoyant Just like the title of the film it’s just words with no meaning.
doesn't she tell Bond she has a secret before they have the fight in the car? I think as soon's she wakes up from her nightmare, she's wrestling with the decision to share whatever this secret is, presumably something to do with Safin.
She possibly knows she is pregnant before he dumps her, I think its ambiguous but we should assume yes for drama's sake. That could be the secret, but its that nightmare that seems to have her worrying. But perhaps fear for her child's future could have triggered memory of her own childhood trauma? She herself is the child of a QUANTUM assassin. thats why Safin was in the house. and now she's going to give birth to the child of an MI6 assassin with his own vengeful enemies...
EDIT: having a child isn't a reason for Bond to quit his job, he's already retired. On the other hand, Madeleine has reason for the rest of the world not knowing its Bonds child, is why Mathilde's existence is still secret five years later.
It feels like something the writer's reverse engineered . . . clumsily. That is, they decided on the ending and then realized the plotting was so weak, they needed to sprinkle things in here and there so at the end, people go, 'Aha!" as though it had been brilliant all along.
At that point, SPECTRE had been wiped out by the nanobots, not Bond. Blofeld had been planning to kill Bond outright with them and would have done so long before Bond even found out he has a daughter.
So, are we to believe Blofeld has it all figured out ahead of time? If so, why didn't he figure out Saffin was going to kill him in a few moments?
It reminds me of the same pseudo-genius Silva shows in Skyfall, the world's greatest computer genius who can't hack a laptop.
100% pregnancy surely, given 30mins later when they separate she grabs her abdomen when he says they'll never see each other again.
She never says it’s a secret, Bond assumes it’s a secret. She just says that she has something to tell him.
That she was pregnant.
The fact is having a child would be the death of Bond as we know him. And as he likes to live. From Blofelds point of view at least too. And from our point of view certainly. We don’t want to see future Bond films with him having a family. It would make him ineffective at his job. Bond is a loner, a hunter who lives for the thrill. Not Family Guy.
yes, definitely the effective death of a film character most would be willing to pay to see. Though now I'm interested in Mr Incredible style adventures with the spy family saving the world side by side, which we'll never get to see thanks to this movie's end.
I'm so glad we've avoided that, at least..
So, ol' Ernst is just bullshitting James, trying to play with his head.
And ol' Eon is just bullshitting us, trying to play with our heads.
100% this 🍸
The secret was that Madeleine had Bond's baby; the "it will be the death of you" was just Blofeld goading Bond for being an idiot, falling for the manufactured orgy of evidence that Madeleine betrayed him during the PTS and shutting her and by extension his daughter out of his life for the next 5 years.
Like so much of the movie, I found it all manufactured and contrived. During the PTS Madeleine keeps saying that she needs to tell Bond something but she never does. If she had just held up her hand and said two simple words: "I'm pregnant", it would have stopped Bond in his tracks and foiled Blofeld's plan right then and there. Of course, the movie would have played out vastly differently but that doesn't change the fact that it's a very contrived, lazy piece of writing.
All my wife kept saying on second viewing during the Matera scenes was “just bloody tell him” :)
Is he retired at that point ?
Pretty sure they wouldn't let the general public ride round in a fully loaded DB5 !! Would be an interesting conversation at customs 😀

good point. I assume he's retired because that's how I interpreted the closing scenes of the previous movie where he threw down his gun and walked away from M towards Madeleine. But don't think it was ever said out loud in the dialog of either film.
so the Aston he's driving on Matera is the same as the one he "borrows" from Q's lab at the end of SPECTRE? I'd forgotten that scene. therefor its MI6's car, not the same one he won for himself in Casino Royale? in which case he must still be working for them or else he's driving round in stolen government property?
I get so confused about that damn car! at least it did cool things this time...
Skyfall, as he prepares to get into his DB5: "The trouble with company cars is they have trackers." It's his car.
Yes, Q fixed it up, but it already had gadgets from SOMEWHERE by the time of Skyfall (the ejector button), and this Q has quite a track record of choosing Bond over MI6.
SkyFall its definitely his car he keeps in storage. and its not just the ejector seat (which may be a joke he tells M, not a actual thing) but didn't it have rocket launchers he used against Sylva's helicopter in the final scene? so he has been making modifications to his private car, and hugely expensive ones involving weapons you'd assume would not be legal to own. but then that one we see destroyed, so its not the same one seen in SPECTRE.
doesn't he take a car from Q's lab at the beginning of SPECTRE as well, that Q intended for another unseen agent? I assume thats the same one he "borrows" a second time at the end of the film. Coincidentally Q is issuing to all MI6 agents the same make of car Bond favours in his personal life.
my problem is I havent watched the first four CraigBonds recently. I thought if I could remember the history of Madeleine, Blofeld and Vesper, I'd be prepared to understand this new film. Never thought I needed to pay so much attention to which car was which! I need a flowchart just for this car...
The car he takes early in SP
is a DB10. The car at the end is a DB5
Arguably THE DB5.
thanks @Barbel so you think the car in Matera is his personal car? therefor maybe evidence he is retired?

I wonder if Q and Moneypenny suspected FiennesM was an untrustworthy sort ever since he took over the job? they both go behind his back and do many things not in their job descriptions. Still they all seem to be friends at the end of this new film even though M oughta be locked up in the same cell recently vacated by Blofeld for what he's done.
The implication is that it's his personal car, but since that was destroyed in SF and then remade by Q (apart from the steering wheel, of course) then perhaps Q fitted some optional extras just in case 00..., er, Bond, needed them at some point- as indeed he did.
Q is a good pal to do all that!
if one of us had that sort of repair/customisation work done at our local garage, I wonder what they'd charge? that's all coming out of someone's taxes!
It's been said that Q has a mancrush for Bond; what better way to display it? 😁
"If you've come for the car, I parked it at the bottom of the Tiber."
Bond will spend your money
Somewhere in the forum someone (very helpful ....) posted a link with an interview with Purvis and Wade. The writers say the DB5 is the same as the one he won in poker in CR. Bond and Q work on it in their spare time, it's not a company car.
