Why don’t we just have a voluntary members fee like most other forums. That’s what they do to raise more money for storage. I haven’t used my image hosting sites in years now. And they’re a pain when you have to keep flipping back wards and forwards copying and pasting links. Most are automated and are no hassle at all. I’m on a quite a few forums and on the bigger ones you have to be a member to use the forum upload system.

People that have been messaging me on here about various props etc recently, I’ve had to move the conversation to FB or email or another group as it’s so much less hassle to just take pictures on this device and upload them directly, rather than taking them, uploading to an external hosting site, then flipping back and forth copying and pasting. I’ve tried it here but it so often times out that it becomes an even bigger pain.

People will just start to just move away to FB and other sites if we start losing features like this, as it’s a high image based forum due to the subject. And that’s the last thing we want as it’s already much quieter than it used to be because of specialist FB groups slowly taking over.

    Effectively what I suggested.

But realistically that entails either some very close activity monitoring or building-in some possibly complex features.

Apparently you missed Emtiem's take on this:

We're both wrong. And lazy to boot.

One other point on this is that you have to remember to then right click on the image links or you wind-up on the host site and off AJB ... though I'm sure that's just further confirmation of placing too much value on convenience.

Ok, image uploading has been re-enabled, to be honest, I forgot I had disabled it so sorry for that.

I will keep an eye on the speed that the disc space fills up. There are a couple of things I can do to compress images daily, which might help, but it does mean I have to actually do it, which, let's be honest, you will probably have more chance of winning the lottery! But I will look at it.

External hosting may be the way forward, I would like something integrated into the site but unfortunately, I have backed the wrong horse with Vanilla and it appears the development of the free version has stalled if not died completely and I don't believe there is a third party plugin!

    Some stats for you:

    • Database Size: 1.11GB
    • Images 29GB! - Reduced now a bit but that was taking ages
    • Costs: $224.95 per year - From September: $251.83
    • The next plan up is $443.88 (60 GB of space) - This I can't afford to cover on my own.
    • The site makes a small amount from advertising but nothing to write home about.

I might try looking into Cloudflare which states "Images are priced at $5 per 100,000 images stored and $1 per 100,000 images delivered" which doesn't seem bad value! I just don't know how to make it work right now!

No need for that, I didn't say that at all. I've never minded linking images but it's fine if you do; if you start a fundraiser I may well chip in as I like this site. I was just trying to be mindful that SiCo is doing all of this out of kindness and wouldn't want to ask him to do even more for us.

You twice noted my being "inconvenienced" as the non-problem.

  • emtiememtiem SurreyPosts: 5,948MI6 Agent

Okay, you’re after an argument; I’ll leave you to it.

It's good to see that new members are able to join again after the lifting of the block put on due to the high level of spam accounts registering.

I'd like to thank SiCo for his work in restoring the site after the most recent outage, within the last 24 hours.

  • PoorMansJBPoorMansJB USAPosts: 1,203MI6 Agent

No, I'm after what I think is best for the site and its members.

  • PoorMansJBPoorMansJB USAPosts: 1,203MI6 Agent

Agreed! Trying to reach him so we can address this going forward but no luck thus far!

And I’m thinking of the one guy who has plenty enough to cope with keeping the site up and running for us all (as the last 24 hours should show) and am trying to show him some gratitude without putting more on his plate. I think there’s a mid point between the two, unless you really are just after an argument. If you’re trying to contact him to sort out a financial arrangement then I applaud you, genuinely.

Guys, I think that this distracts from the main purposes of this thread so please take it to PMs if you must.

I'm in contact with SiCo and he's been working away on the recent problems. This recent outage was caused by something different.

I would just like to thank SiCo and the Mods again, for their continued efforts and hard work in keeping the site going and restoring when it goes down. You have my absolute gratitude and respect, All🍸

I'll thank you on behalf of all of us, TRK. As ever most of the credit goes to SiCo for everything he does.

  • BarbelBarbel ScotlandPosts: 37,863Chief of Staff

There appears to be another problem. Would someone please try to send me a PM then write here what happens? I got "internal server error".

  • Silhouette ManSilhouette Man The last refuge of a scoundrelPosts: 8,845MI6 Agent

I just sent you a test PM and it seems to have went through to you fine.

  • BarbelBarbel ScotlandPosts: 37,863Chief of Staff

Thanks, SM, it worked just fine. The problem from earlier seems to have gone away (or SiCo fixed it).

That's good, @Barbel. I haven't sent a PM in so long so I thought I'd try it to see how it was working. Good that the issue has been fixed again.

Alas, this problem is back and more widespread than I at first thought. It would appear that people are getting "Internal Server Error" messages when trying to post, or send a PM. SiCo will have a look at it tonight.

  • emtiememtiem SurreyPosts: 5,948MI6 Agent

Yep, I got a bit of that this morning.

  • SiCoSiCo EnglandPosts: 1,371M

I can't find any reference to this new problem int he logs. I have cleared everything so will look again tonight and see if anything has occurred. Please post here if it happens today.

    Thanks

Yes, I think it did it for me when the site was trying to autosave my uncompleted message as a draft, before I'd even pressed 'post comment' - in case that's useful.

I have just had a 'internal server error' message. I thought it may be best to report it here.

One a couple of minutes ago in Random Chat.

Edit- I've informed SiCo that this is happening more frequently now.
