A Curious Thought About Vesper's Grave

Apologies if this has been brought up somewhere before but I came across a hidden detail with Vesper’s grave. This idea actually stems from my first viewing of NTTD and I had forgotten about it until I last watched the film last night.

When Bond is at Vesper’s grave and you can clearly see her death year as 2006. This makes sense since Casino Royale was released that year and also contains references a few times that the year is 2006. But the real curious thing is that her date of birth is 1983. The actress who played Vesper, Eva Green was born earlier and so Vesper’s birth year was deliberately changed. But why to 1983?

I wonder if it is a reference to the fact that Spectre was not seen on screen between 1983 and 2006. The last time Spectre was featured in a film was in NSNA. The dates on the grave therefore could represent Spectre’s absence from the screen.

It could also be a symbol of McClory’s continued insistence to get his own Bond series started after NSNA in 1983. He was always in the background being a nuisance to EON productions which finally ended with his death 4 days after Casino Royale was released. I think Vesper’s grave could therefore be a subtle nod to McClory (or a subtle middle finger if you see it in a negative way).

It's an interesting thought. But in CR and QoS Bond fought Quantum and not SPECTRE. We also need to remember that NSNA isn't an official Bond movie and the relationship between EON and McClory was extremely bad.

    I can't remember, but I assumed that 23 was Vesper's age from Fleming's novel.

she probably was 23 in Fleming's novel. All the FlemingGirls were in their midtwenties except Pussy who was thirtysomething

I just cant imagine a 23 year old being given responsibility for so much money on an important government mission. I know I was still a hardpartying selfdestructive idiot at that age, I was lucky they let me wait tables

then again she did try to embezzle the money at the end, so maybe that just goes to show: M screwed up once again in trusting someone who wasnt ready!

I'm pretty sure Fleming doesn't give her age.

You are right that CR does not mention Spectre but Le Chiffre does say he knows about the bigger picture and Mr White says he is from an "organisation".

QOS mentions Quantum as you say but it ends up being part of Spectre like the "organisation" mentioned in CR in Craig's fourth film.
