Using the end of YOLT and the beginning of LALD, perhaps with elements of With a Mind to Kill, could work very well in a future Bond movie. But I have some caveats. I'd rather not see this happen to Bond. I'd prefer to see Bond in a PTS with other MI6 agents or SBS operators on a mission. One of Bond's team gets caught and maybe presumed killed. Then the storyline is much the same as in the books, but 007 isn't the Manchurian candidate. If they chose to let this happen to Bond himself I think it would be a big mistake to do it in Bond26. The audience need to get to know Bond as a strong character before this storyline is used, preferably in Bond28 or 29. it has to heppen to an established bond actor that people have a connection with, not a new one who will easily be seen as weak if he gets captured and turned on his first movie mission.

On BBC's 'Sunday Politics' show just now, Ben Whishaw has said that it's his hunch that there'll be an all-new cast for the next Bond film but that he would return if asked.

Critics and material I don't need. I haven't changed my act in 53 years.

That's nice that he would return. He's probably right that they'll be all-new, but I would have no problem seeing him again as I thought he was terrific.

I think he was great in the role, but it would look wrong if he returned.

do you mean beginning of Flemings Golden Gun, rather than LaLD? I dont see how the beginning of LaLD would fit here

Yes, I think @Number24 was talking about GG. I guess it was an answer to my post dealing with Horowitz's extraordinary contribution to the literary universe.

Having said that, although nothing would please me more than to have a contemporary version of With a mind to kill, it should be done as a legacy movie (like NTTD for Craig). Just focusing on Bond 26 and Bond 27, novels like Trigger Mortis (without the Goldfinger sequel elements) and Forever and a day seem much more relevant.

OK, we have news about Bond26. But don't get your hopes up. It seems the 'reinvention' is taking a lot lot longer.

"There are a lot of ideas [about potential actors] that have popped up that I thought are interesting,” says Amazon MGM Studios boss Jennifer Salke. “I think there are a lot of different ways we can go. We have a good and close relationship with Eon and Barbara and Michael. We are not looking to disrupt the way those wonderful films are made. For us, we are taking their lead ... The global audience will be patient. We don’t want too much time between films, but we are not concerned at this point."

Elsewhere on this site I posted a message quite some time ago about brand co-marketing deals being done for Bond26 and I stand by that 100%. What has happened with Bond26 is a mystery. I thought maybe the writer strike and other potential strikes had led EON to abandon the original timetable for B26 delaying it by a year say.

This Saulke person says they are not concerned about the amount of time between films but at this point if no decisions are being taken we are looking at a 5 year gap, minimum, between NTTD and B26. I know Asp9mm has said on this site expect nothing until 2027 and they have been very well informed in the past. 2027, sheesh.

To add fuel to the fire of a 2027 B26 date, depressingly in August there was this story with evidence that Babs Broccoli has set up a firm to make an Othello film, presumably with Daniel Craig.

    https://filmstories.co.uk/news/othello-daniel-craig-barbara-broccoli-bring-stage-production-to-screen/

EON produced Othello on the stage with DC a few years ago.

I can't see how a six year gap between films is going to help the franchise. Bond fandom is aging and they need to build on what they have with the 16-24 year olds now who will continue to watch the movies aged 25-65. And where are the computer games to appeal to the teenagers, the future audience?

IO Interactive announced Project 007 in 2022! This article on Techradar updated last July says: "There are no official details about when we can expect the new Project 007 game."

Gamesradar reported in September 2022 that Project 007 would arrive in three years. Where's the publicity for a summer 2025 release?

What makes this 5-6 year gap even more perplexing is that in late 2022 we were getting plenty of comments from EON about reinvention etc and stories in the media of plans for the future being made in 2023, see my past comments on this thread. Or is the explanation they found someone they like but they are too young and they are ready to wait until this person is in their mid-thirties?

I don't think they've someone in mind, and delaying the production only to have the so-called chosen one the right age in three or four years would be the craziest decision ever. This is not the way the Broccoli clan has been working so far and it would mean EON and Amazon are ready to do anything just because one guy among many others is too young right now. I just can't believe it.

In this unprecedented era of IP over saturation, EON has certainly gone the opposite direction with Bond. I don’t know whether to chock that up to shrewd strategy, indifference, or sheer incompetence. Perhaps a bit of all three. In any event, I’d rather them get it right than get it fast. But my fear is we wait a long time and they flub it anyway.

  • Number24Number24 NorwayPosts: 22,424MI6 Agent

Waiting for a spesific actor to get old enough is a huge gamble. What if he gets run over by a bus, becomes a drug addict, loses his intetest in acting or is revealed to be a sexual predator? Other reasons are much more likely. BB has worked on making Bond movies all her life and it looks like she wants to this opportunity to work on other projects for some time. Cinema and movies are changing and they may want to see what happens. Bond's death in NTTD gave EON the opportunity to take their time. The Mission Impossible franchise for example is in a very different situation, not too different from Bond after YOLT. It’s only a question of time before Tom Cruise gets too old so MI and they don't know if the movies will work without him, so they’re making movies fast.

EON also has to change the Bond movies somehow after NTTD, and how they do it will affect not only Bond26, but Bond movies coming after that.

Having said this, I can't wait for the next Bond movie to start filming!

After NTTD came out, I got slaughtered by you lot for saying we won’t see anything at least till 27, at a push, maybe 28. All the vibes now seem to be suggesting 28 😳😩. It’s madness. They really don’t give a crap and would rather spend time on personal projects like Othello and some other niche drivel.

I'm pretty sure that I wasn't one of "you lot", Asp9mm.

It was a bit of an over dramatic generalisation 😁. With Higgins not around to do it, someone has to.

Ah, Higgins. I miss him, I daresay you don't though! 😁😁😁

You didn't get slaughtered by me ! I'm still betting on nothing until 2030.

Blimey. Although I was talking to someone in July who has been involved in the films since Casino Royale, and she doesn’t think there will be another one from the current owners…. Ever. Which four years ago I would have ignored. Nowadays, I’m not that confident in dismissing it completely.

Can’t say that would come as a big shock…there does seem to be some apathy at present…maybe if these ‘niche’ projects bomb, there could be a change…but are Amazon happy to sit on their hands after buying a stake? 🤔

Nice to see you post again @Asp9mm, even if it’s not what we wanted to hear…🍸

Yes, welcome back 9mmASP. I too wonder why Amazon is so patient. At least it tells us they’re in it for the long game....

A year ago I would have strongly disagreed with this but sadly now I think it could be true. Michael G Wilson looked frail during NTTD press events, BB seems to only want to spend time with Daniel Craig and Greg Wilson may not be as enthusiastic. I think the Kevin McClory situation resolving itself with his passing and the fact they were able to make, and very successfully, Casino Royale brought the EON family full circle for the Bond franchise. Why go on? Even adjusting for inflation Skyfall is the biggest grossing Bond film of all time. MGW and BB have nothing to prove, no more 'worlds to conquer' after the Craig era. In 10 years the Fleming IP becomes available worldwide, it already is in Canada. Yes, I know there's the Fleming estate and people can't use the gun barrel or characters like Jaws, created for the EON films, but Bond, M, Q, Tanner and Moneypenny and SPECTRE will all be available to any studio or streaming service with deep enough pockets.

It was a bit of a desperate idea to try and explain the lack of progress.

It's all quite frustrating really. I do feel the fans are being treated with some contempt and condescended to.

But, it's a weekend of celebration so I'm not going to dwell on the lack of future. I'm going to celebrate the past.

    "Any of the opposition around..?"
  • Sir MilesSir Miles The Wrong Side Of The WardrobePosts: 27,920Chief of Staff

MGW retired a few years ago…

Making a James Bond film won’t be as easy as you think…Eon have several USP’s that won’t be available to anyone - Q being the most obvious as he’s not in the books…and using the James Bond theme is off the table too…

I’m long past caring to be honest. I have 17 movies (DN-LTK + CR) to view again as often as I want. I don’t need the others, or any new one that may or may not arrive during my lifetime. BB clearly doesn’t give a hoot, and I don’t need to either.

Yeah, well, sometimes nothin' can be a real cool hand.

If they want a younger actor, then look no further than Harris Dickinson

Nightmarish, People making Bond films who don't know Fleming and don't know Bond, But maybe this is the reinvention BB was talking about? I've long since stopped caring about Star Wars and Dr Who, why not make it a hattrick?

  • SomeoneSomeone Posts: 1,607MI6 Agent

Major Boothroyd, or they can create a character just called quartermaster. I agree the Bond theme is so key, it could mean any non-EON Bond film is stymied from the start. But if EON really doesn't care, why not just license the theme?
