In many countries the government will assist those in need with basic funeral costs. I am curious N24, could you get a government grant in Norway to pay for a traditional Viking burial?
We have a welfare state that helps and supports us "from cradle to grave",
but I still doubt it will follow us "from cradle to burial ship".
The serious answer is that families who can't afford it will be covered for some of the cost of a basic burial. Significant persons (the best known and most deserving WWII heroes, sports heroes, and people from the arts) will get their burrial fully paid by the state.
But sadly no viking burials.

A company in the states now offers tiny Viking burials. They build a model sized ship and fill it with your cremated remains and send it off in a pond. It is underwhelming.

I read an interesting newspaper article yesterday with new information about the Soviet plans for WWlII, especially the Norwegian bit. In a Warsaw Pact attack on the West during the cold war the Soviet would lead the main attack at West Germany with more tanks than anyone and a flank attack at north Norway.
Any child with an atlas could see this. What we didn't know was that Poland was given the job to attack south Norway. The USSR would nuke Danish and Norwegian air bases (and all over NATO) the first day.
The Polish military would then attack Denmark. This country is small and flat, so Poland would win after a short while. They would go on to make amphibious landings on the coast of Norway and and take the southern part of the country. The Norwegian military focus was to the north with mainly boot camps and reserve units left in the more populus south. The way to the North Sea and the Atlantic would now be open for the Soviet Baltic Fleet.
We know this because Poland is now a NATO member and the old documents and personell are now open to us. Polish inteligence services could operate pretty freely in Norway during the cold war because our counter-inteligence focused on KGB and GRU activities and East German intelligence. Polish inteligence had sleeper agents and hidden stores stocked with communication equipment, weapons, documents etc. already in place in Norway. Some of the equipment was stored in waterproof boxes underwater.
The Warsaw Pact system was that each member was given a task by the USSR in case of an attack on the West. Only the Soviets knew the whole picture, Czeckoslova didn't know the plans of Hungary or Poland.
What was the NATO plan for WWIII?
West Germany would help! A lot of German equipment was pre-stored in mountain hals, ready to be used by German NATO troops. This was set up in the 1960's, only twenty years after the German occupation. Because of this the plan was kept secret to the Norwegian public. The KGB and GRU on the other hand knew the plan down to details of what equipment was stored in what mountain hall.
Allthough I rarely comment on topics because my English writing skills aren't the greatest, I do really enjoy it to read everybody their comments, jokes and theories. Until I get my licence, my dad's been taking me since last August, every 2 weeks for some basic driving lessons in our manual E36 at a big empty (due to it being Sunday) parking lot.
Starting, stopping, u-turns, turns, gear changes, the lot. It's sort of turned into to me not forgetting how to do it and it's always an interesting experience.
Today, I got it up to 4.5k RPM, with a max speed of 60km/h. It may not be a powerful car at all (it's barely a 1.6 as it's a SOHC) but I somehow managed to do a small burnout with it.
He told me off a little for tire wear since it's supposed to be a reliable commuter, highway car but it was the most fun I've had in ages.
Totally worth it... for bragging rights, at least.
I only stalled it once, due to his "ease up on the throttle more" advice but I think I've gotten the hang of smooth braking.
Needless to say, I can't wait until I turn 18 to get my licence and eventually buy my first car (an FC, fingers crossed because it's a 1.3 and insurance, yearly circulation tax will be peanuts. It will hopefully be NA to avoid reliability issues).
