This airport has done more to stop Germany's uncharming reputation of efficiency and being coldly calculating than anything else ever. It even starts up in the middle of an international travel ban. I have just finished an extended period of 14 hour night duties (plus commuting!) and am completely tired even after sleeping until only a couple of hours ago! At this rate of working I will soon be able to afford to build my own Bond villain lair. I asked a question while some of us watched FRWL last night, bus sadly we were sidetracked by the movie and the sad fact that I wote Fleming wrong .
I wondered how the people who worked on the Enigma code machine reacted when they read or watched FRWL? Many of us know the Germans thought the Enigma code was never broken while the fact that the British broke the code was one of the most closely guarded secrets of WWII. Many of us also know Ian Fleming was one of the few who were allowed to know this. I picture one of those few Germans and British who knew about Enigma sitting in the cinema going: "Hold on, that muct be ……."
Did they suspect Fleming was in on the secret? Do we know of any reactions to the Enigma/Lektor link?
What do you think the reactions were?
No idea, I'm afraid. I don't know how secret the Enigma was when Fleming wrote the book (1956- he says so in the foreword) or any reactions when it was published the next year.
In case anyone hasn't read it, Fleming calls the machine the Spektor. For obvious reasons, that's changed to the Lektor in the movie which may or may not have influenced Thomas Harris in naming his Hannibal character years later.
I've posted a question on a history forum on how long htis was secret. I haven't seen any replies yet, but I feel fairly certain Ultra was secret for years after the war. The question is for how long. I think a Norwegian inteligence organisation called XU was secret until the early 1990's even though XU stopped existing in 1945. Enigma and the methods used to crack it was I should think the basis of a lot of coding and decoding work in the cold war, so there were better reasons to keep that secret.

I certainly remember seeing at least one interview with an ex Wren codebreaker from the 90s or early 2000s where she spoke of her shock and, to an extent, sense of betrayal when the book came out. She had never even told her own family what she really did in the war.
I just saw the SpeceX rocket on TV. It's probably a good thing the US won't be dependent on Russia to launch Rockets into space.

Well my AJB friends my long hours of working to cover for people and do my own duties have paid off. I have been promoted, in fact I have jumped two ranks. Instead of a 'One Bar' Senior Security Officer, I am a 'Two Bar' Chief Security Officer and swap my blue uniform shirts for white ones (and a white peaked hat cover!) Best of all I have a very healthy pay rise! A change in rotas may mean I have more free time and (I hear the groan) more time to return to AJB.
One More bar and I will look like Commander James Bond! Well, I can never exactly be a lookalike but uniform wise will suit me!
