Who on this forum likes The Beatles' music? They are my personal favorite band of all time. My favorite songs of theirs are "She Loves You," "Please Please Me," "Day Tripper," "Drive My Car," and "Can't Buy Me Love." I could still name off several more, though!

My favorite has to be "Maxwell's Silver Hammer." The first time I heard it it was sung by Steve Martin playing the part of Maxwell himself, and found it hilarious.

I also like the psychadelic (spelling?) songs that make no sense, like "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" and "Yellow Submarine."

Edit: Just so nobody gets the wrong idea, what I said about the psychadelic songs doesn't mean I condone the use of drugs.

My favorite song is "Come Together", but I prefer to just use their albums as a whole rather than the songs in them.

I like some of their songs, but truthfully, I don't think they really lived up to the hype they generated. IMHO, I don't think their that good.

Well, I have all their albums and , if anything, the hype doesn't live up to them !! Can you name a single band that comes anywhere near them in terms of talent, musicianship and musical innovation ? I'd be suprised if you could - the nearest I can think of is The Who and they didn't write anywhere near as many classic songs as The Beatles. But - each to his own.

I agree with you Sir M -I'm lucky enough to be of a generation that can like The Beatles and The Stones almost equally, but The Beatles are the true giants -but only just -as I like The Stones' darker edge. The Who were also quite rightly a great band -it's funny how these fantastic bands of the 20th C are British - I haven't seen any posts about bands like The beach boys, or The Doors etc.

In terms of musical innovation, probably not, no. But that's not necessarily a good thing, as I do think some of their stuff is pretty well dirge. I don't have a "definitive up there band", so there is no single outfit I'm such a big fan of that I could claim come anywhere near the top in my estimation. There are many bands I like, but I couldn't put one ahead of the other. I just like what I hear for different reasons. In terms of musical innovation, there are many definitive records by many artists over the years have contributed greatly to music for me. That may differ from what's "critically acclaimed" or whatever, but then critics are a bunch of what-nots anyway, and are too busy examining their own interiors to take into account other people's views

It all comes down to specific taste. I think The Beatles are on the whole good, but I've never understood the fuss and hype and still can't. In fact, I wish someone would change the record (to excuse the pun) as one would think The Beatles are the only band to come out of Britain in the last 50 years at times.

As well as that, I think as individuals, single personalities if you like, The Beatles were a collective bunch of Juan Kerrs (perhaps with the exception of the lad who voiced Thomas The Tank Engine

) and personally I wouldn't stop if I met any of them in the street.

BTW the name your looking for (narrator of Tank engine) is Ringo Star.

Back to the subject, I love the Beatles, I'm listening to Strawberry Fields right now, I've even been to Strawberry Fields in Central Park! I just really like them and agree that they are at least one of the best, if not the best band EVER!

I think the reason I like the Beatles is because of Mum, she's nuts about them! She has a suitcase full of memorabilia in the attic! And when I was younger we listened to the red and blue compilations in the car a lot of the time! There was a time when I could recite Penny Lane in it's entirity! I love the picalo trumpet part in that! Anyway I've said far too much so I'll be off! bye bye!

George wrote some truly beautiful stuff and is vastly underrated, John could write anything (check out Imagine and How Do You Sleep for real love/hate songs). Paul is the one who has suffered the most music wise - most of his latter stuff is awful, with a few exceptions. Ringo was.... well, Ringo

I think it great to see how the band grew-up musically as well, starting out a pop-band and finishing as a rock band - almost !
As you say M5, there are many other good bands out there - but how many of them will be remembered, and still played, and still earn millions, after 40 years ?

Hey, Sir Miles, Paul wrote LALD! And Ringo has some killer post-Beatles stuff, too. My father has many of his LPs, and they are all (mostly) enjoyable.

Yes, I enjoy the happiness in Ringo's work. His songs seem to lift the spirits and Choose Love, his newest single (and album) sounds like it could be put unnoticed into Rubber Soul.

Aaah you see I quite like the Beatles because they sang about subjects other than love! I get tired of pop songs being about nothing but love all the time, well its not really love anymore is it?! Anyway I'm being an old man, sorry!

The funny thing about the Beatles is their cumulative talent - so many many good songs. That said, other songs by other bands are simply better, but they're often standalones or not backed up in the same way. ie Gerry Rafferty's Baker Street, had it been a Beatle track on say Abbey Road, sung by John, would be in every fan's top 10 Beatles songs, same goes for Mr Blue Sky by ELO. God Only Knows by Beach Boys is simply too good for any Beatle album, it p!sses all over Revolver mostly, same for Town Called Malice by The Jam. All these songs are imo better than most Beatle tracks, but I'm not crazy about all their other stuff (what else did Jerry Rafferty do?).

The songs you mention are good songs - but not Beatle-class songs. The only one you mention that they could have written was God Only Knows - and The Beach Boys have a great back-catalogue too.

It's all about opinion, and in mine, no one (or band) will match the Beatles.

That is one of his better albums, more consistent than most of his latter ones.

The Beatles were long gone when I was born but I still love them. I've heard 28 of their songs and that's it. My dad has a CD and that's the only one I've listened to. I never get tired of hearing it over and over again. I wish I could have been alive when they were around, to be around when they were there. But even now I've never met a single person who hasn't heard of them.
They rock! No one can be better! Cause let's face it; in 40 years time, no one's gonna have a clue who S Club 7 were, who Busted were, or who Justin Timbilake, Eminem, Madonna, Gwen Stefani was. But we'll all still remember the Beatles. They're hear to stay. And no one can ever be as great as The Beatles were!

The early Beatle years & the later Beatle years both have great things to offer IMO. The earlier tunes are just filled with energy, and seem like a combination of pop & rock. The later albums & songs were more experimental & have much more depth to them. They really broke new ground in 20th century music. I myself prefer the Beatles 1962-1966 time period over the 67-70 period.

Ringo has such a good voice. He narrates those Thomas The Tank episodes so well!

I've recently become more exposed to the beatles, and I just think they are awesome! Best band ever probably. Better than Queen, and any other breakthrough band.

I'm glad you mentioned Thomas the Tank engine. Ringo was by far the best narrator, far above Carlin, who was above whichever guy is doing it now.
