Cheesy but entertaining romance from the 1980's. Lenny Von Dohlen and the stunning Virginia Madsen fall in love after his computer starts composing Phil Oakley songs. I remember seeing the poster for this in a London tube station when I was a 9-year-old. It's taken me 23 years to get around to seeing it, but it was fun.
I find this film fascinating as it proves that not all films need climaxes, and a reasonable quality plot is overrated. Seriously, the only reason I saw it was that the people I went to the cinemas with, chose it and I was not in a position to say no. Whilst not a horrible film, it's not particularly good, is completely unorignal (Deja Vu is far superior) and is a waste of Sandra Bullock's talents. I wouldn't particularly recommend it.

"Hollywoodland"
Starring Ben Affleck as the troubled George Reeves, TV's "Superman" of the 1950s, this was an interesting and engaging study of the circumstances surrounding the death of a classic-era American TV icon. While not really answering any questions, I thought it did a good job of showing where Reeves was---emotionally and professionally---at the time of his death.
The intercutting between Reeves' situation (via flashback) and a fictional L.A. private detective (played by Adrien Brody) investigating his death was well-handled, for the most part, although IMO the P.I.'s personal/family drama diluted the momentum of the narrative.
Still, a fascinating snapshot of a bygone era; I tend to believe that Reeves actually did commit suicide Not a 'feel-good' movie, but the performances were solid, and I recommend it.

I was looking forward to this as it was made by Michel Gondry, whose previous film was Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. However that had a script by the great Charlie Kaufman. TSofS is written by Gondry and while it covers similar territory to Kaufman, it has none of his brilliance. There's plenty of visual ingenuity courtesy of Gondry, but the film is all over the place and it becomes tiresome very quickly.
Low-budget re-working of Scorsese's Taxi Driver. It seems to have been made by either somebody straight from film school who has no experience of anything beyond the movies they saw in Film Theory class, or by somebody with no originality whatsoever.
Awesome movie with cool shooting scenes and great one-liners by Arnold Schwarzenegger. 10/10

You should see Predator. IMO it's one of Arnie's four best films along with the first two Terminators and Total Recall.
The only thing that bothered me about Commando is why does that Bennett guy(the villain) wear chain mail and leather pants? Is he gay or something. I liked the dictator Arius much better. His death is one of my favorite villain deaths of all time(shot 4 times with a shotgun and fell out of a window and off a balcony). The end battle was really awesome too.

Went and saw the Simpsons Movie today. I was highly impressed. Funnier than I thought it would be. Now I just have to watch the second Bourne film before I see the third one.
The Simpson movie get 4.5 out of 5 stars.

A classic noir starring the beautiful and incomparable Rita Hayworth. I think that Gilda is a good film, however Hayworth makes it a great film. The two best moments are a brilliant musical performance given by Hayworth and, of course, the first time we are introduced to her. I would definitely recommend this film, if only for the extraordinary Rita Hayworth.

Believe the hype - this is one amazing film.
The action sequences will leave you breathless, and one particular fight scene drew a load of "wow"s from the audience (which is unusual in England).
But it wasn't just the action, there was a real sense of paranoia to the film which felt very relevant to today.
Matt Damon was brilliant, he really wears this character as a second skin now.

I like the long shot of Ray Liottas charector as he gets out of the car and walks into the hotel through the kitchen and out to a gambling floor (I think it's a gambling floor. Maybe it's the restaurant area). I know it's a very long shot. Very cool movie!

80's version of Hunter S Thompson's gonzo journalism. Bill Murray is fine as Thompson, but Peter Boyle is outstanding as his crazy lawyer. It is considered a failure, but I liked this much more than Terry Gilliam's Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.

Last night I watched Black Snake Moan. I can't believe so many critics thought this was a good film. Granted, it has its moments and the acting is fine, but c'mon. . .every Southern stereotype in the book is trotted out and put through its paces, and the story comes across as something Faulkner would write before the alcohol fumes cleared away.
Pretty good movie. Not as good as the first though. I liked the villain on the first one much better too. The only big problem with this movie IMO is that Chris Tucker is much much more annoying than usual with the winy voice and all. Jackie Chan was great as always.
I'm hoping to watch Casino next. Does anybody know if it is as good as Goodfellas?
Its a very good film but it's nowhere near as good as Goodfellas. As a followup to Goodfellas it simply does not compare, so think of it as an independent film with no link to the former. The one thing that IMO Casino actually improves upon Goodfellas is De Niro's performance, which IMO was better in Casino than in Goodfellas (in which he was fantastic.) Sharon Stone also delivers a wonderful performance (her best ever IMO) however Pesci, whilst good, was much better in Goodfellas. So to conclude, see Casino and enjoy it but don't compare it to Goodfellas.

I'm one of the few people who prefers Casino to Goodfellas. I think I prefer it because DeNiro is the main character, and DeNiro will always hold my attention more than Liotta.

I much prefer De Niro to Liotta. De Niro is probably my all-time favourite actor and I absolutely idolise him (he really is one of my gods ), however IMO Liotta was so magnificent in Goodfellas that he more than made up for being the lead and De Niro being a supporting character.
That said, I have nothing against Casino. The first time I ever saw it was on video at my Grandparents' house. My Grandfather walked in at the end
when Pesci and his brother were being beaten to death with baseball bats
and my Grandfather got quite a shock. He still continues to remind me of it. )

Just good escapism to me. Pretty funny. This film did impressive numbers at the box office to my surprise. I hear that they're already considering a WH2...I say quit while they're ahead; movies like this are hit or miss as it is.

Bruce gets a blue rinse in his old age, everything is shot through in a blue tint to lend credibility. It's gripping when it's on screen, and I enjoyed Bruce's banter with the nerdy computer kid. Sort of miss Bruce doing his stuff on his own rather than as part of a double act, but then even in the first Die Hard he had his banter going with the fat black cop outside the building.
Fell down a bit as the villain's plan unfolded. Not sure what actual threat he was trying on really. It was all tease and no strip.
Credibility went out the window early on as Bruce jumped out of a speeding car onto hard concrete, much like Craig off the baggage handler or something in Casino Royale. Again, problems with who the villains are these days skirted around in both films.

I just moved to New Zealand, so it was awesome to watch it and then go look at some of the scenery.
The finale is pure True Lies, but with this sort of film you can't have Muslim fundamentalists as the villains as there's nothing funny about them and anyway they did take out the Twin Towers. So there'd be no reason for them not to just blow up Bruce's daughter and themselves for the sheer hell of it (or Allah of it, I suppose).
I prefer Die Hard 4.0 to True Lies and one of the reasons is that Die Hard 4.0 doesn't have Islamic fundamentalists as the bad guys.

The new dvd's transfer and 5.1 is killer. There's an interview with Alex Ross and cool cover art. Unfortunately skimpy on extras.
