I really can't say if a film like this is even in Toro's caliber seeing that he's hit-or-miss with his past ventures IMO.

I'd prefer Ridley Scott(Blade Runner/Gladiator) to take on that project. Problem is that he might be too old to associate with the younger audiences that actually covet and play the game. The key to success on this venture is keeping it in tune with the masses while adding your creative vision to the mix. Harder to juggle than one might think.

I think Ridley Scot would be a great choice as he has the vision to give us the expansive view of the universe a movie like this requires. Of course, he'd probably take 5 years to make the movie. Agree that del Toro may not be the best man for the job; I can't say I cared much for any of his past efforts as they're little more than esoteric "B" movies to my eyes. I don't know if he could handle a mainstream property like this one. Cameron could be another good choice here, the operatic nature of the Halo universe would suit him, though I don't think he'd bite.
Another thing I hope doesn't happen but it will...Whomever plays Master Chief, watch them take off his helmet so that the viewers can see who he is. It never fails in instances like this. That's the mystery of the character in the game; you want to see who he is but you're ok if you don't.

They made this same boo boo when Stallone unveiled in Judge Dredd. You never see Dredd's face in the comic! That's a no-no! :))

And with that mug of his, he would have been better off leaving the helmet on. :)) And while we're whining about Judge Dredd, why didn't somebody put a bullet thru Fergie's head? I actually like the movie for what it was, but his attempts at comic relief make it almost unwatchable.

Back to your point, I agree in that I don't see any movie studio greenlighting a tentpole action movie where we don't see the hero's face. It's an integral part of the game but they won't have the cajones to film it that way (even though they should).

Speaking of casting worthy actors clad in metal, here's a snippet I got from another Marvel hero:

Jon Favreau gives another update on his Golden Avenger movie.

According to the Blog operated by director Jon Favreau, the Iron Man movie begins filming in February. That must mean he's chosen or is close to choosing a lead actor to play Tony (Iron Man) Stark.

More info on Iron Man is promised for Comic-Con in San Diego next week.

The film is set to premiere in theaters May 2, 2008.

Back in the 70's Captain America and Iron Man were by far my favorite heros, so I'm very curious about this one as well. I hope they use the 70's red and gold version of the suit for the movie.

Remember Captain America starring Reb Brown? He wore a motocycle helmet over his mask and his shield looked like see-through plastic. :))

Coincidentely in that version, Steve Rodgers was an artist on the side when he wasn't doing government work.

On the Iron Man deal, I hope they pick the right Tony Stark. I know Tom Cruise wanted to do it but he's too short and too close to the Ethan Hunt character now.

Oh I remember it all right. I wish I could forget that piece of cheese. The costume in the first movie made the stripes on Cap's suit look like suspenders; and he didn't even put it on until the end of the movie. Gaze upon it and despair...

    CapAmerica.jpg

They fixed it somewhat in the second movie but still insisted on giving him a stupid blue motorcycle helmet with the wings painted on and that dopey transparent frisbee, i mean shield. 8-) Even Christopher Lee as the villain could not save that turkey. Here's the "improved" version:

Twenty years ago, Timothy Dalton would have made a perfect Tony Stark (at least lookswise). Cruise is no longer a factor (thank God) but I'll be very curious to see who they finally get. I wonder if he'll bring out the War Machine armor for the inevitable big finale?

You want to know something pretty pathetic? I still remember the theme song like yesterday. :))

I recall watching the movie series with my grandmother(rest her soul) when they aired on CBS and to my astonishment, she actually enjoyed them. I think more than I did.

Whether she was trying to get in tune with my interests of why I loved comics or lusting over Brown's beefcake body is clearly up for debate. :))

IMHO, this is the perfect time to bring Cap back to the big screen. We sort of live in questonable times and the character could certainly reinstall the values we've grown to be proud of...as corny as that may sound. ;)

On the subject of tv shows, I showed my son a clip of the old Spider-Man live action show starring Nicholas Hammond on the internet. He thought that it was cool because he had never known this was attempted, but he cracked up at the costume once he laid eyes upon it.

He told me that entertainment in my kid years was pretty pathetic. :))

Don't give your kid too hard of a time, Rogue--I remember watching the old Spider-Man TV series when it was first on (with Nicholas "Sound of Music" Hammond as Spidey, and the guy who played Larry Tate on Bewitched as J. Jonah Jameson), and even as a tender young lad I thought it was silly and cheap. I actually much preferred the live-action Spidey who used to show up on The Electric Company, the one who spoke only in comic-book-like word balloons that would appear above his head. Fun and educational!

Ah, for those of us of the right age, here's the only web (yuk yuk) image of The Electric Company's Spider-Man that I could find:

And check this out--it's the Mego Spider-Man I used to own!Hmmm--nothing looks the same without that old patina of childhood memories!

    Same here. :)) :))

As a kid I always thought Electric Company was better than Sesame Street precisely because of those Spidey clips. I even remember Marvel releasing a version of the comic based on the Electric Company shows. I don't know why, but I'm pretty sure it was Morgan Freeman under those tights. :o He was the only tall lanky guy on the show as I recall.

I used to like the Spiderman TV show as a kid, then I saw it again as an adult and could only shake my head in disbelief. Anybody remember Harold Sakata as a heavy in one of the shows?

I'll say this though. As cheesy as those shows and movies were, as poor as those costumes were, as lousy as those special effects were, I never, ever missed one of them. To my adolescent mind, a Captain America with suspenders and a Spiderman with sunglasses were better than no Captain America and Spiderman at all.

So I suppose next summer will be the Slugfest Between The 3s? Anyone think that Pirates and Spidey will compete the hardest for our dollar?

No other comp on that magnitude, right?

Another day, another photo. The lucky stiffs who attended Comic Con got to see a clip of Spidey 3, including the first-ever look at Venom. The rest of us have to make do with this image:

Will we see Venom in action or are they going to leave the door opened for maybe a fourth?

My understanding is that Venom will be a major villain in the movie. I also came across a fairly significant (but still uncorroborated) spoiker which I think you'll like. Read at your own discretion:

I saw the teaser on television last night. The last time I bought comics Venom was called Eddie Brock and had a personal vendatta against Peter Parker for reasons I can't remember. Venom was really creepy and if I remember correctly Spidey's spider-sense didn't work when Venom was around. Is Spidey's costume black in this film becuse he is infected with the alien symbiote? I know he changed his costume to black in the comics for a while but I don't know what the reason for this was or if there really was one.

Going off at a tangent I read an article about James Cameron's proposed early nineties Spider-Man film the other day. One thing that they kept from Cameron's treatment was Peter Parker having web-spinning glands in his wrists rather than produce them from his work in the lab. I think the studio Cameron was working for at the time was in financial trouble and couldn't secure the rights or something.

In the comics Spidey got the black suit during the Secret Wars mega-crossover series when his red and blue suit became damaged. The black suit turned out to be an alien symbiote and it gradually began to manifest itself and take Parker over. Reed Richards (Mr. Fantastic of the Fantastic Four) helped Spidey remove the symbiote, which turned out to be a semi-intelligent being. It became resentful of Parker and eventually bonded with Eddie Brock. Don't know if this origin has been changed in recent years.

I think the movie's explanation for where the suit/symbiote comes from and what it actually is will be simplified.

I always liked the idea of Parker being able to spin his own webs; I thought it dovetailed more naturally and logically with his origin. I always thought it odd that the comic book Spiderman had all the powers of a spider except that obvious one.

It's been all quiet on the Spidey front. . .till now! If you need no other reason to see Casino Royale, the newest trailer for Spider-Man 3 is attached to it. However, it turns out that we'll get to see the trailer first on MTV on November 9. Here's a bit of news:

Hey guys. I haven't posted here on AJB for a while, but as some of you will know I am a Spidey-nut, so here's a teaser/spoiler that you may not of heard of just yet:
In Spider-Man 3, Peter Parker goes onto the set of the "Spider-Man" movie (that's right, a movie within a movie) and meets special effects guru Quentin Beck (and you hard-core fans will know who he is!)
    Can't wait!!!

Mysterio is really an irritating character to encounter, at least on the Spidey videogames.

what about Harry Osborn, J.J.J.'s astronaut son, and The Lizard, all of whom were rather conspicuous in the last film?
I hope its not going to be like Batman and Robin, where three new villains and one new hero all required origins and scenerychewing time

EDIT just skimming the first pg of the thread, where people try to remember who was the hobgoblin and who was the 2nd Green Goblin
when I was buying the comics as a kid, Ross Andrus run in the mid/late 70s, there was the 3rd Green Goblin:

In the new Ultimate Spiderman comics, the suit was created by Peter and Eddie's fathers as a cancer curing suit, but went horribly wrong. Peter was the first one to find it, and when he got rid of it, Eddie got it.

I was just reading a magazine (it was either Empire or Total Film) that gave a run down of main cast for SM3, which had:
    Tobie Maguire as Peter Parker/Spider-Man
Kirsten Dunst as Mary Jane Watson
Thomas Hayden Church as Flint Marko/Sandman
    Topher Grace as Eddie Brock/Venom
Bryce Dallas Howard as Gwen Stacy
James Franco as Harry Osborn/Night Surfer
"Night Surfer"? I've been reading Spidey comics since the early 90's and I've never heard of this character before.
We saw a (very) brief glipse of "Night Surfer" in the trailer, and it looks like Harry Osborn in a Robin-style mask, riding a variant Green-Goblin glider.
I would have preferred him to be the new Green Goblin, but I guess we'll just have to see if it plays well on screen, or not.
