Doesnt this movie seem top heavy with villians? Its like a Bond movie where they throw Goldfinger, Scaramanga and Rosa Klebb into the mix. Does anyone know if theyre working together, ala the Batman TV show of the late 60s?

what about Harry Osborn, J.J.J.'s astronaut son, and The Lizard, all of whom were rather conspicuous in the last film?
I hope its not going to be like Batman and Robin, where three new villains and one new hero all required origins and scenerychewing time
I was just reading a magazine (it was either Empire or Total Film) that gave a run down of main cast for SM3, which had:
    Tobie Maguire as Peter Parker/Spider-Man
Kirsten Dunst as Mary Jane Watson
Thomas Hayden Church as Flint Marko/Sandman
    Topher Grace as Eddie Brock/Venom
Bryce Dallas Howard as Gwen Stacy
James Franco as Harry Osborn/Night Surfer
"Night Surfer"? I've been reading Spidey comics since the early 90's and I've never heard of this character before.
We saw a (very) brief glipse of "Night Surfer" in the trailer, and it looks like Harry Osborn in a Robin-style mask, riding a variant Green-Goblin glider.
I would have preferred him to be the new Green Goblin, but I guess we'll just have to see if it plays well on screen, or not.

This is just too much traffic for a movie that's going to be no more than 2 and maybe one half hours. Raimi would have to be a genius to orchestrate the character development on this list and not lose the audience. Venom could carry this film on his own...perhaps Sandman could as well...

I've been reading comics since I could crawl but...what's a Night Surfer? Osborn? ?:)

    That stinks.

I have my concerns as well, but consider: Christopher Nolan did a brilliant job of balancing multiple villains in Batman Begins, showing that it can indeed be done. Also, from what I gather, Sandman really is the main villain and Venom doesn't show up until very late in the film. This part is speculation, but I believe Harry Osborn will be involved in the creation of Sandman and of the black suit, so he'll be orchestrating things--maybe while he's training himself to take over as Green Goblin. Again, just speculation. Finally, there's been talk of Mysterio being in the film, but everyone indicates that his role would just be a cameo. I'm going to trust that Raimi can do more than deliver a three-ring circus as Burton and Schumacher did with their over-crowded Bat-flicks.

An omnipresent danger with comic book movies is always that temptation to over-stuff them. The final two Batmans prior to the redemptive BB are prime examples of this. Spiderman has managed this concern well thru the first two (as did Singer with the first two X-Men pics), but Raimi will have to be very nimble to pull all of this off, IMRO.

What I would love (assuming that Spider-Man 3 lives up to my expectations) is that they will make a few more, perhaps with villains that they can't cram into number 3. I know that they have announced that this will be the final one, but you can say never. :v

With who? Electro? BTW, the most ridiculous costume for a bad guy in comics history...despite the powers.

After you get by the big three, Green Goblin, Ock & Venom the rest aren't that tempting a draw cinematically as opposed to their respective 32-paged format.

Although I do love The Shocker and Scorpion, they'd have to be teamed up for whatever Spidey project was next.

RA, Electro's costume in Ultimate Spiderman is quite cool.

By the way, another cool character would be the Rhino. And Kraven would be great, too. I keep mixing up the games with the movies, none of the character I've just mentioned have been in the movies yet, right? Because they've been in the games.
  • taitytaity Posts: 702MI6 Agent
Dont forget, Spidey's black for part of the movie - this is just going to add to the plot.

I never really got into the Ultimate Universe, Night but you're right; his costume is better-looking.

I had the USP game briefly. ;)

I've read the first large book of Ultimate and I loved it, looking forward to reading more. The UPS game was amaxingly fun, too bad it was ridiculously short and that after the game ends, so do the side missions meaning you can't work any more to unlock more costumes, which sucks. I was two missions away from getting the Peter Parker costume.

Oh, I must disagree--Spidey has a fine array of foes who could keep him busy for a few films to come. Kraven has already been mentioned and apparently he was considered for a Spidey 3 baddie, and so too was the Vulture. Both are interesting characters who could easily feature in a Spidey film--especially Kraven. Like Electro, both of them have pretty silly costumes, but when has that been a barrier in these films? The Green Goblin doesn't wear a purple jerkin or have those curly-toed booties, and Doc Ock never once put on a green-and-orange body suit. (What is it with Marvel and the color green? I swear almost every one of Spider-Man's foes has green somewhere in his outfit!)

Other possibilities: Dr. Connors has been in one film (possibly the next), and we all know he becomes the Lizard. A story drawn from the first Lizard adventure, involving Connors's attempts to regain his sanity so he can reconnect with his wife and son, could be done very well. Then there's Kingpin--I know he was used in Daredevil, but he is first and foremost a Spider-Man foe, and a great one at that!

    :)) I never realized that but you're dead-on.

You're right about the depth of bad guys and I'm sure purists would enjoy a bevy of Spidey sequels one after the other but for me, when you get past Venom, that's it for me. I don't know; they work well in comic form not always in movie form.

I will agree that Kingpin making a return to Spider-Man would be awesome; they should do the story where Kingpin's wife gives him an ultimatum to continue a life of crime or her.
He entraps SM, who has a broken arm btw, to his penthhouse to to tie up loose ends before midnight.

On the brink of dealing Spidey the killing blow, the clock strikes 12 and Vanessa enters the room to see what Fisk's answer is...he goes with his wife leaving SM crumpled on the carpet. That was a classic story.

Anyone remember that one? It would work great for a movie.

Yes, Spidey has one of, if not THE best gallery of villains in the comic book industry!
One name that hasn't been mentioned yet is The Scorpion. If they wanted to show how much Jonah hates Spider-Man, this would be the villain to choose for the next film. Of course, Spidey would need some help from the Black Cat, it's only natural. :D

theres a coloring convention in comic books that goes back to Action Comics 1
principal characters are coloured in primary colours,
    secondary characters in secondary colours
Spiderman dresses in the same colour scheme as Superman, Wonder Woman, Captain America and many more
youll find that The Joker and The Riddler dress mostly in greens and purples
when Lex Luthor wore a costume through the fifites it was mostly greens and purples
even Lois Lane wore a green and purple outfit throughout the 50s

And here it is. . .

    The NEW Spider-Man 3 Trailer!

So whadda ya think? It looks to me that Sandman's origin is more-or-less as it was in the comic book, though the Ben Parker angle is something new. No look at Venom, but at least we get to see how the black suit fits into the Sandman storyline. It all looks good, but, darn, there's still nearly six full months to go!

Let me thank you firstly for posting this, HB. :)

Now let me say that the trailer does not rev me up to see this. It's pretty much..."meh".

To be fair, I was more pumped at the teaser version than this one and perhaps the studios aren't trying to give away much of the plot and I can live with that.

I'm going to see it pretty much anyway...

I can't agree with you on that Rogue. I think the trailer looks awesome. I can't wait!!!! :D :D :D

I'm trying to calm down but I adored both of the first two films (I saw each twice at the cinemas) and if Spider-Man 3 is even half as good as the others, I will be delighted. BTW, I love it that MJ knows who Spider-Man is. The scene in which Peter dazzles MJ with his talents looks really cool.

I can respect that, Dan. The full trailer just didn't move me like the teaser did.

It was the same for X-3 with me; it didn't get me pumped but when I finally saw the film, I had felt I'd gotten my money's worth. So...we'll see. ;)

I hope I didn't come across like some people did with the early CR trailers ('love CR or be damned.') You have a right not to like the full trailer. :D I just tend to get a little overexcited in regards to the Spider-Man films.

It's all Marvel to me and as far as comparison, wasn't X-3 the highest grossing comics film of 2006? Ratner honestly did not do a bad job at all and it was an "enjoyable" indulgence for me. I'm hoping that Spider-Man 3 is the same if not more - the trailer's just bland to me.

I mean comparing Spidey/X-Men to whatever pinacle we agree/disagree on means very little to me; I'm not a Marvel fanboy...my son is.

And what's with this Marko killed Uncle Ben crud? ?:) I thought that the guy died in the first film? I don't like that at all...

This, in itself, is an abomination to Amazing Spider-Man #200.

It sounds so Jack Napier-ish to me - ooooh... Six degrees of BATMAN. :o

I finally got around to seeing the trailer. The visuals look amazing but the story looks to be a little on the dark and dour side, much like the first two entries. Still, that's the way most of Spidey's books go as well so I guess I can't complain too much.

The subplot about Marko being Uncle Ben's real killer is a head scratcher though, since it completely contradicts what happened in the first movie and kind of lessens the importance of Parker's confrontation with the thug. I wouldn't be surprised if it all turns out to be one big McGuffin (that's not a spoiler by the way, just an idea).

Still, I've seen the first two and I'll almost certainly see this one as well. Even if I don't care for the downbeat storylines and the Lifetime Network relationship subplots, the action has always been fast, furious and suitably spectacular.
