#10 On Her Majesty's Secret Service - Would be # 1 on most people's list if Connery had played it, IMO
LOL! Of course we agree! We agree Bond is one of the greatest series of films in cinema history. Our personal tastes and opinions differ, but wouldn't it be boring if we were all the same?
Lazenby was far better suited for OHMSS than Connery at that point in time. Yet another historical "what if" that should be dismissed as irrelevant.
(Insert John Cleese double take here) Really?! Wow. So if OHMSS had been made with Connery it'd be worse? I just can't see that. Even DAF Connery was a better actor then Lazenby. Just my opinion.

Connery in OHMSS wouldn't be worse at all IMO, but at the same time it would feel a bit off in places. I just cannot imagine Connery putting on Sir Hillary Bray's accent. Nor can I imagine him falling in love and crying. But the latter would have been a brave move which might have proven to be shocking in the good way, thus great cinema.... But the hillary bray accent - can't imagine it.

1. GOLDENEYE - First Bond film I saw, love Brosnan, Sean Bean is a great villian, friggin' Famke Janssen, that awesome tank chase, watch my review for more info: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9q1y2RdNEjU
2. GOLDFINGER - Do I even need to say anything? Auric Goldfinger, Oddjob, Pussy Galore, the Austin Martin, and top it off with Connery: The best Bond film really.
3. DR. NO - Started it all! Just Sean Connery delivering the famous words: "Bond... James Bond," make this a top contender. And Ursela Andress coming out of the water... yeah
4. TOMORROW NEVER DIES - Probably the most underrated Bond film of them all. Brosnan kicks ass, so does Michelle Yeoh (best Bond girl) I love Johnathan Pryce as a Rubert Murdoch type, even Terri Hatcher doesn't bother me that much (They're real... and they're spectacular!)
5. CASINO ROYALE - I'm not a big Daniel Craig fan, but this movie just kicks ass! Such tension, such artful direction, such a shame it had to follow up with QUANTUM OF SOLACE...
6. YOU ONLY LIVE TWICE - Okay call this a guilty pleasure, but I love this movie! Yes this is basically the film AUSTIN POWERS is spoofing... but it also has hot Japanese girls in it. Really, what more do you want?
7. ON HER MAJESTY'S SECRET SERVICE - The only problem with this movie is George Lazenby. He's just not good. But apart from him, the story is great, Diana Rigg is a memorable Bond girl, and that ski-chase is still exciting!
8. FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE - Honestly, I've always found this one to be a little overrated, but it's grown on me. I love the fight in the train with Robert Shaw, love Connery (even if it's 17 minutes into the film before he shows up) I love the art direction, but really there's too many dull moments with SPECTRE.
9. THE SPY WHO LOVED ME - I used to love this film as a kid, but watching it again, it really drags in parts. Still, that opening ski-stunt, the underwater car, and Jaws make this a worthy Bond film.
10. THE WORLD IS NOT ENOUGH - This film is much better than I remember. The biggest problem, even worse than Denise Richards, is the bad guy and the anti-climactic ending. Otherwise, with Sophie Marcau, Robbie Coltrane and final appearance of Q, this is a good addition.
11. LICENSE TO KILL - I didn't like this film as a kid, but it is growing on me. The problem is it just doesn't feel like a Bond film, more like a typical dark 80s action movie about a druglord. But the last time I saw this film, I enjoyed it alot. Maybe it will be higher next time.
12. THE LIVING DAYLIGHTS - Kind of a meh movie for me. I love the first half of the film (That scene with Timothy Dalton and John Rhys-Davies is SO GOOD) but the villains are kinda weak and Bond teaming up with the Afghan rebels is a little disturbing.
13. FOR YOUR EYES ONLY - Another kind of meh movie. I enjoyed it when I was watching it, I liked the mountain-climbing scene, but it's a little unmemorable for me.
14. SKYFALL - I still don't know where this film will be in my list, but I was a little underwhelmed by it. I loved the opening, but it got kinda boring after a while and didn't lead up to anything except a strange Dark Knight / Home Alone rip-off. And don't get me started about the new Q...
15. THE MAN WITH THE GOLDEN GUN - I'm kinda torn on this movie. It's not a good film, but I do like Christopher Lee, I think Roger Moore gives one of his better performances (love the scene between him and Maude Adams) but there's just too slow in parts and too many silly moments (Sheriff Pepper again?)
16. DIE ANOTHER DAY - I really don't think this movie is as bad as everyone says it is. The first half is great, seeing Bond tortured (although the Madonna song kinda ruins it). It's just that it goes too over-the-top in the second half of the film. It still has Halle Berry... if you don't find her in a bikini hot as hell, you're obviously gay (not that there's anything wrong with that...)
17. DIAMONDS ARE FOREVER - This is bad... Hilariously bad! Honestly, it's kinda got a so bad it's good kind of vibe to it. There are moments in this film that make me laugh so hard (though I'm not sure they were intentional). Kinda hard to rate on that basis... I'd say it's worth viewing, and it's got Connery.
18. LIVE AND LET DIE - The only thing I really like about this Blacksploitation rip-off is the Paul McCartney song. That's the best part of the film. The rest... not a fan.
19. THUNDERBALL - This is the worst Connery film. It's so boring. What a let-down after GOLDFINGER.
20. A VIEW TO A KILL - Not even Christopher Walken can save a film with 57-year old Roger Moore and Grace Jones (shivers...)
21. OCTOPUSSY - Granted there are some funny moments in the film, and the opening is good, but when I saw James Bond dressed as a clown, I just couldn't take it anymore.
22. MOONRAKER - I mean really... do I need to say anything? Dr. Dullhead, Jaws getting a girlfriend, the looney tunes boat chase... and that stuff in space is so tedious. It used to be my least favorite film until...
I am a brand new Bond fan since I saw Skyfall in the theatre and I have finally watched all 23 Bond movies. Its been a great ride and I have a new found respect for the movies and I absolutely love James Bond as a character. This ranking is incredibly hard to do since I like all of them (except for the bottom 4) and the films are all so different from each other. Here goes...

What a fantastic post Dutchfinger! I'm in the middle of a bond-a-thon and I hope to update my top 23 afterwards.
Thanks! I am really enjoying all of the other posts here as well!! Ranking the movies and sharing oppinions is definitely one of the joys of Bond fandom! Speaking of sharing oppinions, A couple of months ago I made +/- 25 min. long video's in which I did a complete analysis on every Bond movie. I shared some background, I went through the movie scene by scene and shared my oppinion. I remember you (among some others here) enjoying these video's. Unfortunatly I had to take them down from youtube because I now have an official youtube partnership. I didn't want any copyright issues with the analysing Bond video's. So, as an alternative, I am reuploading them to a different website. (vimeo.com) I will share them here later on and resume the whole project. That way I can share my oppinions on an even greater in depth level with some of the biggest Bond fans out there!
@raptors_887, intresting to see Thunderball ranked at the very bottom of your list. Is it due to the speed up scene on the disco Volante at the end perhaps?

Yes that is part of the reason but overall I thought the whole movie was just really slow. They were clearly trying to take advantage of the new underwater camera they bought and those scenes dragged on forever. The final battle scene isn't much of a climax because they're all swimming and moving very slowly which takes the intensity out of it. And then the boat speeds up and it looks so fake and I said this HAS to be at the bottom of the list.

So just passing that idea onto here if Thunderpussy is cool with that. For those who will do it, I suggest listing the films sideways rather than downwards (otherwise it'll be too much in height).

So, my updated list is in my sig :007)
Not a bad idea, just updated mine. Of course I might start going though the bond films and my list might be changing...
It is a great idea. Many years ago we had the favourite films feature in our profile. What happened to it? I'd love to have it back, because that way, we can get an idea of each other's likes and dislikes in terms of Bond films by simply checking their profile.
Ok you can forget my entire ranking. I just watched Goldfinger and FRWL back-to-back and I realize I actually like Goldfinger alot better. FRWL doesn't really get going until they get onto the train which is at roughly the 1 hour mark of the movie.

As much as I appreciate FRWL, as many times as I saw it the theatre at the Bond festivals (in the Seventies as a kid, those were the days), I just never loved the movie very much because of what you say above.
Recently I re-watched CR '67 and NSNA for the first time in years. NSNA is a lot better than I remembered it to be, and if I were to rank it within my list, it would be underneath TB and above DAD. So still very low, but much better than I initially thought nonetheless. So, I give NSNA a 6/10.
On the other hand, CR '67 was a lot worse than I remembered. It is the only film in my entire DVD collection that I would consider an all-round bad movie. And if it wasn't bond-related then I wouldn't even own it. There is absolutely nothing that I like about the film. The only decent thing is Ursula Andress, and I guess it's slightly amusing when all hell breaks loose in the casino at the end of the film. But apart from that, the film is an absolute abomination, and not only is it dead last on my bond list, but the next to last film (MR) is so much better than it. The film is bad, doesn't make any sense, it isn't funny (the ultimate crime for a 'comedy' movie), and david niven's stuttering in the first half of the movie is so very annoying. This movie gets a 3/10, and that's only because movies like Drop Dead Fred and XXX exist.

Glad we found a common ground with the disaster that is CR '67 )
23: Octopussy - it can be fun to watch when drunk, but I felt it just got so bogged down and silly at points that it shook me from that suspension of disbelief
22: Moonraker - fun movie... bad Bond film that went way too over the top with the gadgets. It wasn't a bad plot, just too much.
21: Skyfall - This could be the worst... but I'll wait til a replay of it. Plodding, inconsistent, pretentious, and just doesn't feel like a Bond film half the time. There were some stellar moments and a lot of potential but it just really fell flat.
20: You Only Live Twice - more or less a forgettable Bond. Just didn't resonate and is kind of there.
19: Diamonds are Forever - just too weird at points and Connery just wasn't all there it seemed. It had some fun moments though.
18: Die Another day - one of the best openings and a great first half that just goes off the rails with over the top gadget after over the top gadget. It is watchable and fun, but it just overdoes it.
17: A View to a Kill - great themesong and not that bad of a movie. Had some plodding moments but Walken delivered to me.
16: Dr. No - not great, but not bad. Love the old set pieces still though.
15: From Russia with Love - great set and a good Bond girl. The henchmen wasn't bad either. But I mostly remember it for one scene so...
14: Live and Let Die - strange at points, but fun and the music is great. Nice introduction for Moore at least, though the voodoo priest moments and durge turned festival are still very weird to me.
13: The World is Not Enough - Brosnan showing a little more of that grit and ruthlessness that I like. Good Bond villain in the "Bond GIrl" and I didn't hate Denise Richards. Also, Cleese was amazing.
12: Tomorrow Never Dies - great villain, good Bond girl, and some great action with a brillian finale.
11:On Her Majesty's Secret Service - one of the best stories of the series that resonates throughout the saga. However, Lazenby was either not good enough or just too caught up in being Connery instead of his own Bond. It drags it down just a little to me.
10:Goldfinger - great villain, great Bond girls, great cars, and some great lines. You can't really argue against this film.
9:Thunderball - took everything in Goldfinger and just out classed it. Loved the underwater scenes, loved the Bond girl, and one of my favourite Bond lines after he harpooned a guy
8:The Spy who Loved Me - just pure class and felt Moore finally got a chance to show he was an all around Bond. Also.. Jaws. Nuff said.
7:For Your Eyes Only - simplistic, realistic, and it just felt right after the bombast of the last film.
6: Casino Royale - Bond learning the ropes, good hints at backstory, and just a fun ride the whole way through.
5:The Man with the Golden Gun - simple story, one of the best, if not the best Bond Villain, and good down to earth action. I don't understand why this is so underrated.
4:Quantum of Solace - Picks up where CR left off and just charges full steam ahead. Loved the story, loved the villain, loved the Bond girls and just had a blast. After all the flak I heard about this film for years, when I finally watched it I was blown away by how wrong that flak was. This was damn good.
3:Licence to Kill - personal story, more dangerous Bond, two great villains, and just an all around human Bond that resonated with me. Also... maybe the best girl there is. He chose right in the end :P
2:Goldeneye - This was my favourite for a while... great story, great villains, Brosnan really fit the role well, and the commentary on a post Cold War Bond at points was nice.
1:The Living Daylights - After a second viewing after years this finally suplanted Goldeneye as the best Bond film. Dalton is Bond. Tough, gritty, yet still suave. And I really enjoyed the story and the moments where Bond actually gets to show his conflicts with being a killer. And of course, a great final fight scene.

I felt Skyfall was too plodding and pretentious with many issues with the plot. I felt QoS was a smooth, fun ride with a story that engaged me, a better villain to my mind, and it felt like a Bond film. There were times in Skyfall that I felt closer to watching something other than a Bond film.
I would happily watch QoS again. I don't know if I'll ever watch Skyfall again. Maybe in a few years I'll give it one last chance, but I just was not impressed in the slightest. I almost didn't finish the movie when I first watched it.

Wow Kabraxal, this is the only film we seem to differ widely on, other than this we have a ridiculous amount in common, opinion-wise! B-)
I guess a top 23 changes often, but as I see it today:
1. Goldfinger - The one that set the formula of the Bond's to follow. Funny enough, our hero is pretty useless in this film. He causes the death of the Masterson sisters, he gets captured and only rescued by the grace of Goldfinger himself. And eventually he needs Pussy to save the day. Still, this movie has it all: Connery at his finest, the car, the music, the villain, the girls. It is a great fun ride.
2. On her majesty's secret service - The most controversial Bond. Either high in the top 5 or bottom 5 in most cases by people. I love it, because it follows the novel perfectly, Telly savalas is the best Blofeld, the Ski chase, Barry;s best score, the great location of Piz Gloria and of course the best Bond girl. Lazenby was flawed, but remarkably well in the key scenes: death of Tracy, the proposal and the fights. Great supporting cast also.
3. From Russia with Love - Connery again at his finest, great supporting cast with pedro Armendariz, great music, fantastic villain in Red Grand and again Bond here is working as a spy instead as a superhero like he is in the Moore era.
4. Thunderball - Apparently Connery's favourite and it is understandable: Locations are beautiful, so are the women. Terence Young is directing again, the villain is great, the sets of Ken Adam beautiful and the soundtrack is classic Bond. Only setback is the underwater scenes drag on a bit too long.
5. You only live twice - A guilty pleasure. Connery was clearly bored, the plot hardly makes any sense and it is all over the top. Yet, I love it. I live in Japan, I live in fact 10 walking minutes away from Osato's office (New Otani hotel, which is still the same today.) and I adore Nancy Sinatra's song. I might have seen this movie the most, it is a great one to play on the background when you dont need to focus on the story but just enjoy key moments.
6. Skyfall - Just like Connery and Moore, Craigs 3rd movie is his best (so far.) Love the fact that they are going old school again, but still ging it the typical Bond feel. As you can see I am a sucker of the old movies, so I always had trouble with Dench playing M, despite that she is a wonderful actress. In this movie, she was great, but I am even more overjoyed when Bond walks into M's new/old office at the end of the movie. A return to the old days? Great movie, soundtrack, locations, set design. The best of the modern Bond's by far.
7. Dr No - The one that started it all. Connery is pure sex, it follows the novel quite accurately and despite a low budget the clothes and set design are fantastic. Still, at moments it feels a bit outdated and there is some racial remarks (fetch my shoes) that are disturbing. Best moment is the cold blooded kill of Dent.
8. The spy who loved me - over the top, a copy of You only live twice, yet I really like this one. Best opening scene ever, most beautiful Bond girl, it has a ski scene, in fact all the Bond elements are there. Great locations, easily moore's best movie.
9. Casino Royale - The right answer to the dreadful Die another Day. I am still not a Craig fan however. He is simply to ugly for the suave secret agent. He is a good actor and he has great material to work with here. Love the Bond song, the build up and the girl. Maybe a tad too long and of course missing typical Bond elements like Q and Moneypenny.
10.Live and let die - A movie with several highpoints and several cringe moments. High points are the bus chase, the voodoo, Baron samedi, the crocodiles, the boat chase, the locations, the soundtrack. Cringe moments are the plane chase, the racial feel, The double crossing CIA agent and of course Sherrif Pepper. Moore was quite good though in his first movie.
11. Goldeneye - Brosnan's debut and immediately his finest movie in terms of plot and story. Again a Bond reboot, but Brosnan was born to play Bond. He had Connery's looks, Dalton's edge, Moore's humor. Fleming would have approved. Famke was great as Onatopp, Turner's opening song was typical Bond.
12. Tomorrow never dies - Brosnan again was great; he clearly was having fun. the Asian locations where cool, however Pryce was a mediocre bad guy and Hatcher a dreadful Bond girl. Some cool moment where the car chase in the garage, the cold kill of the hitman, the helicopter chase. The ending was a bit too much Die hard style.
13. The living daylights - I was happy seeing Dalton playing a serious Bond. He lacks charisma and humour, but I prefer his performance than Moore's. This movie mostly lacked a good bad guy and the last 3rd of the movie was dissapointing. Also the Bond girl was a bit dull. The car chase and Cello escape where great and so was the opening scene.
14. License to kill - A little too much Miami Vice (despite loving the serie) for me. I must admit, havent seen this one in a long time. Davi was good, I loved his pet. Lupe was gorgeous, but didnt care much for Pam though. Henchmen were great, just like Q as always.
15. The man with the golden gun - Again a movie with a few highs and some lows. The highs are the terrific locations and Lee as Scaramanga. Also Adams was well cast. The lows are Moore with his Kung Fu, the rediculous Mary Goodnight and the return of Sherrif Pepper. The stunt with the car was amazing but spoiled because of the looney tunes whistle.
16. For your eyes only - Maybe deserves a higher ranking. The ski chase, locations, Melina, the torture under water scene were all great. Kristatos was a lousy villain, Bibi the worst Bond girl and Moore was showing his age.
17. Moonraker - A movie I have started to enjoy a bit more now. Yes, it is rediculous, yes it is produced only because of Star Wars but it does have some nice moments: Locations: Rio, Venice, Iguazu falls. The death of Corinne, the soundtrack, the Bond song, the set design and the boat chase. But the rediculous parts spoil it: the plot, the gondola and the dreadfull double take of the pigeon, Jaws turning a goodie simply to please the 8 year old viewers. It is difficult to take this one serious at all.
18. A view to a kill - Moore was 58. And it showed. That and the dreadful Bond girl and boring middle part in San Francisco spoiled the movie. Good things where Walken and May Day, the Eiffeltower, the interaction between Moore and MacNee and the soundtrack.
19. The world is not enough - Brosnan again was great, so was Marceau as villain. The ski chase was also nice and it was nice to Zakowsky back. But the locations where terrible (Armenia, Kazachstan???), Denise Richards was laughable and cringe worthy, Renard a boring villain. Quite a forgetable movie, the highlight was easily in the pre-credit scene.
20. Octopussy - Lets see: Bond in a monkey suit. Bond dressed as a clown. Bond hitchhiking. And not being picked up immediately. There were of course some enjoyable moments: India was a nice location, Maud Adams was good again and the opening scene was fun. Jordan was a decent villain. But still, it is my least favourite Moore film.
21. Quantum of solace - a dissapointing movie after the great Casino Royale. A boring villain, a plot that I cant even remember. something with water? and most of all: never had the idea that I was watching a Bond movie. Except for 1 scene: the opera scene, which was filmed beautifully.
22. Diamonds are forever - Connery in a Roger Moore movie. God this was awful! Pure camp, but than in a crappy way. The great Blofeld character was killed in this movie by the writers and changed into a parody of a villain. Connery recognized the silliness of the movie and sleepwalked through it. Horrible Bond girl, horrible villain, rediculous plot, terrible henchmen and a rediculous moon buggy chase. The only nice thing was the opening song from Bassey.
23. Die another day. - a missed opportunity. The first 1 hour is done very well. Brosnan finally got the right material he deserved. But than the Bond car was introduced. And the movie collapsed like I never saw a movie collapse before. Terrible CGI, a rediculous plot twist, the Halle Berry that I cant stand in ths movie, the invisible car. What a terrible way for Brosnan to leave the series. Underserved!
Some explanation:
Clearly you can tell I am all for the classic Bonds. I expect Skyfall and Casino Royale to climb up a few steps in the future, but haven't watched them as much as the others.
I thought Brosnan was born to play Bond. Watch his interviews in the late 80's and you can see he was already Bond before having the part. Also in a few of his early 90's movies. However, the material he got to work with was mediocre at best, with exceptions. I always felt sorry for Pierce, if he had the material Craig had, he would have been a bigger legend, me thinks. DAD had a great one hour until the invisible car was introduced. After that, the movie fell apart like I have never seen a movie fall apart before.
Dalton was the Fleming Bond, but since I am not reviewing the books but the movies, I have to admit his movies, like Brosnan's havent aged well. Dalton also lacks charisma. He is serious, too serious and difficult to imagine as a ladies man. He does have an edge though.
Moore was the Bond I grew up with, however he is a weak Bond. Rog seems like a great and fun guy, but he is also too much of a pussy (doesnt like heights, guns, narrow spaces.....etc.) to play a hard edged Bond.

"Moore doesnt like heights, guns, narrow spaces.....etc.) to play a hard edged Bond."
and Connery wore a rug and was scared of spiders, so what? None of the actors can be a true James Bond in real life.
Touche, however, still didnt think Moore was manly enough. I like his humor and the movies that he played in were tailor made for him. But it is not the Bond that I imagine, just seems more like a spoof. A nice spoof, but still.

LOL! Of course we agree! We agree Bond is one of the greatest series of films in cinema history. Our personal tastes and opinions differ, but wouldn't it be boring if we were all the same?
1 - Moore, 2 - Dalton, 3 - Craig, 4 - Connery, 5 - Brosnan, 6 - Lazenby
1. GOLDENEYE - First Bond film I saw, love Brosnan, Sean Bean is a great villian, friggin' Famke Janssen, that awesome tank chase, watch my review for more info:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9q1y2RdNEjU
23. QUANTUM OF SOLACE - You know what, my video review will explain everything:

YouTube channel Support my channel on Patreon Twitter Facebook fanpage
1 - Moore, 2 - Dalton, 3 - Craig, 4 - Connery, 5 - Brosnan, 6 - Lazenby
Not a bad idea, just updated mine. Of course I might start going though the bond films and my list might be changing...
How I've longed to see those words. )
It is a great idea. Many years ago we had the favourite films feature in our profile. What happened to it? I'd love to have it back, because that way, we can get an idea of each other's likes and dislikes in terms of Bond films by simply checking their profile.

1 - Moore, 2 - Dalton, 3 - Craig, 4 - Connery, 5 - Brosnan, 6 - Lazenby
Glad we found a common ground with the disaster that is CR '67 )
1 - Moore, 2 - Dalton, 3 - Craig, 4 - Connery, 5 - Brosnan, 6 - Lazenby
Not sure what I'm looking at here...
Someone's opinion....however right or wrong we think it...it's THEIR opinion and they are entitled to it -{
I felt Skyfall was too plodding and pretentious with many issues with the plot.

One might wonder if Lazenby;s agent had a point: Didn't the franchise kind of died after OHMSS? naturally the movies continued, but it took a long period until the movies became of decent quality again. Mind you, I like the movies, I have watched them on numerous occassions and they have been succesful, but still: It remains a shame that the public did not respond well to OHMSS enough to continue having a more serious movie franchise.
Just my 2 cents.
