I thought a song from a few years back would have been good in a 'Nobody does it better' kind of way. It was from around 1999, was sung by Whitney Houston, and was called something like 'I learned from the best (I learned from you)'.

I've said this before in a similar thread, but I've always thought Creed's "One Last Breath" would make an excellent Bond song.

    Fun Lovin Criminals

We Are All Very Worried About You lyrics

5 to 7 minutes to go, can you feel this?
Your life on the streets is done, forget the business
You get what you give, another day another dead one
Picture me out on the edge with the half a tonne
Tryin' to move it on up, tryin' to move the ???? out
You ain't Billy the kid, you ain't no ghetto son with clout
No doubt you had it hard, just a shard from the mirror
    That went out
    Chorus:
Yeah we're all very worried about you,
Yeah we're all very worried about you,
And if you fly high again they gonna, bag you up,
And if you fly high again they gonna bag you up, bag you up,
And if you fly high again they gonna, bag you up,
And if you fly high again they gonna bag you up, bag you up,
You was a little out of line but you acted like you cared
And from now on, your life, and his, forever bare
I'm out on the streets, hearin' bull???? for weeks
I think it's time for you and me to meet
And if it's all minor scales and the check ain't in the mail
While you feelin' like you failed, wind blowin' past your sail
Nice place to live now son, where you gonna run?
Understand where we comin' from, put down the gun
    Chorus

i always thought this may make a good bond song, or maybe some other the columbian band made minus the swear words.

I've always thought 'Joe Satriani - Is there love in space?' would make a good theme in a similar way to the OHMSS one.

Time Out From The World by Goldfrapp has Bond-song written all over it - they should definately be approached for Casino Royale.

    Fun Lovin Criminals

We Are All Very Worried About You

Great band - great track, not a very Bond-like song though, IMO.
A much better pick from them would be Gave Up On God - probably for the end credits mind.

"Owner of a Lonely Heart" by Yes would have been perfect for a Bond film from the 80's.

It's off their new album Livin' In The City - a good strong album, they have mellowed somewhat though.

Which reminds me: has anyone heard the Fun Lovin Criminals superb cover version of We Have All The Time In the World? Extremely chilled, but well worth hunting out?

Agreed about the Goldfrapp song (and the album is great too, btw)

Yes I've heard it - they include it in their live set too.
They do the song justice, and it was upon hearing this that I thought they could record a Bond song - it would have to be end credits though.

Didn't know there were so many Goldfrapp fans here :)

"My Love Has Two Faces", from "Deadfall". Composed by John Barry, sung by Shirley Bassey- how much more Bondian could it be?

Every Breath You Take by Sting, definitely a Bond title track.

With Or Without You by U2 sounds like a very suitable Bond title track to me.

Not to mention the Thunderball-style opening for the first demo version with the unknown male vocalist on the soundtrack.

Here's one from left field: "Digging in the Dirt" by Peter Gabriel. Would have been cool played over a Binder title sequence, and it has some lyrics that can be interpreted in several Bondian ways, with some imagination. The problem would be incorporating it into a film in other ways (eg, orchestrations).
    Hilly...you old devil!

You can take it even one step further.
    - The composer: Lalo Shifrin.
    - The singer: Shirley Bassey.
    - The title: Liquidator
    - The style: I think Barry ripped-off DAF from this forgotten 1967 classic.
  • BarbelBarbel ScotlandPosts: 37,860Chief of Staff
Well, one could argue that it's ripped off from "Goldfinger"! :)
  • The CatThe Cat Where Blofeld is!Posts: 711MI6 Agent
No. Except for Bassey's voice, it's definately not Goldfinger. But the backround jingle is 100% from DAF, only that's impossible because this is the earlier song... Hm... Perhaps I should send this sometime as well... ;)

I remember the song only from seeing the movie (from a John Gardner book, for another Bond connection), and to be honest I don't recall the background jingle. I do remember la Bassey belting out the title phrase in a very GF fashion, but then that's just her style as you say above.
Anyway, could the background jingle be considered a vamp? There was a court case once upon a time where vamps were called public property...
  • The CatThe Cat Where Blofeld is!Posts: 711MI6 Agent
Yes, we could call it a vamp. I'm re-listening to it now, and it seems like a mixture of both songs. The Li-qui-daaaaaator is definately some Goldfinger stuff, but the whole feeling is closer to DAF. There is another song called Liquidator in the end titles, but it's completely different... Less Bondian, but I feel it quite touching.

I've been here before, I'm sure... Déjà vu.

Björk's Play Dead (written by David Arnold) and Bachelorette.

Grace Jones' Storm, a wonderful Bondesque anthem at the end of The Avengers film.

Recently I have thought Natalie Imbruglia's Counting Down The Days would be a good Bond opener too, a little tweeking perhaps (and heck, it's already got an ideal Bond film name). Natalie Imbruglia, by the way, would be one of the select choices I'd put forward for a Bond song at the moment. Hey, and Bond girl too, while we're at it ;)

Coldplay's fantastic Talk would be excellent, but only because of the main reason why it wouldn't/couldn't be used as a theme - the Kraftwerk sample. But boy can I see the PTS closing out with that lone guitar riff...

However, I'd still love a Kate Bush theme, and with her back in the recording studio it's at least a very faint glimmer of hope once more.

I'll throw my support in for Goldfrapp mentioned above also.

Elton John's "Made in England" also could have made a great bond tune IMO.

I really don't see that song as Bondian, Tee Hee. "Believe" from the same album has more Barry-like chord changes (Eb/Cm/Ab), though (as I've said before) "Shoot Down The Moon" from the "Ice On Fire" album out-Bonds them both.

A fellow 007 enthusiast and I discussed this a couple of years ago, we came to the conclusion that the absolutely perfect Bond song that never was is "Eyes Without A Face" by Billy Idol. If you try listening to it and shut your eyes for a moment you can really imagine a Maurice Binder sequence with beautiful women in front of you :)
  • Pierce007Pierce007 Posts: 32MI6 Agent
"My All" by Mariah Carey, a ballad I know but it has that sort of haunting Bond feel to it. Has anyone here heard it?

I would rather feel The Liquidator as a song for a Matt Helm movie (linking to Murderers' Row).

Now I am not sure how ripping may apply to John Barry as the man himself easily told how he was inspired by the Peter Gunn theme mood for the James Bond theme arrangement.

Maybe 'Promises In the Dark' by Pat Benatar, or 'Good Boys' by Blondie as a clever reference has to be a kick-ass bad boy to get the job done. I could think of some A LOT better when I have more time, though.

    Hi All,

I have mentioned her before and would like to raise a hand in favour of Alison Moyet to sing the lead song for Casino Royale.

There is a track on her C.D album "Hometime" called "If You Dont Come Back To Me" that seems to be everything that a classic Bond theme should be. Vocally dramatic, intense and with the pre-requisite soaring string arrangements to quell even the most die-hard dissenters!

...Seriously though, Alf Moyet should have been approached years ago to record a track or two, because when it comes to singing, not many do it better.

    Cheers,

    Ty.
