Someone please explain to this ignorant Brit. Is the actual Thanksgiving celebration bigger for you than Christmas? Most British get at least two days off for Christmas, a lot get at least a week or even more (public services and catering/hospitality aside) and the whole Christmas tv scheduling is at least two weeks long. Is it the same there, or is it all wrapped up a bit quicker?

I would say that Christmas is easily a much "bigger" holiday here. We get one day as a national holiday - the 25th. And then of course New Year's Day the 1st.
At the old company I worked for (where we had a good amount of vacation time) I and many others would take the whole week between X-Mas and New Year's off - if one still had the vacation days left...
In my family (as with most every family I know) Thanksgiving is really just a celebration of friends and family over a big meal. Sort of a run-up to the whole insane holiday season!
The Christmas TV programs can start as early as right after Halloween! I saw that the original 1968 Boris Karloff cartoon version of "How the Grinch Stole Christmas" was on TV almost two weeks ago!
In America, every holiday is started early and dragged out as long a possible to squeeze every last dollar from as many people as possible. As soon as the stores can get their decorations changed they do it. You will often hear someone say something along the lines of:
"I can't believe they're playing Christmas music already!"
Or,
"They already have Valentine's Day decorations up!"
