I guess I'm just not prepared to accept that a bit of character depth with Bond = no entertainment = box office apocalypse.

Craig did not say he would be a 'less fun' or 'unentertaining' Bond; he said he would be a 'balanced' Bond. Granted, there may be no difference for some of the longtime faithful---but the fact that all of this speculation is still fueled by rumour and the extreme micro-parsing of brief sound bites makes it so much wasted energy, IMHO.

As ever, those not inclined to accept the new Bond will respond unfavourably to such speculation. The rest of us just want to see the movie.

Can't help but think, if Brosnan had said he'd been about playing a balanced Bond, folks around here would be gushing over that comment and lamenting how oh, if only Craig were to try and do a balanced Bond, lol.

Well, that would be St. Pierce, the Martyr. Things would be different. :))

Still, I can't deny I would have been interested to see him try such a portrayal; it's too bad the planets didn't line up that way...but they didn't, and here we are. Connery DIDN'T do OHMSS, Moore DID stick around after MR, Pierce DIDN'T get Bond in '87 (but DID in '95), and DIDN'T (again) in '06.

Stuff happens. As we're not Eon, all we can do is watch.

If we don't talk about the rumors and speculation than what are we going to discuss for the next 10 months. I don't think it is wasted energy, I want a movie too, but won't have one until November. So I read what is going on and comment. It is just my opinion which I share in hopes of generating healthy discussion. I enjoy it. I really like it when everybody in on board one subject and the servers are smoken. I really don't take this all too serious, it is only a movie. One that I care about, but still only a movie.

I'll be discussing the specifics of what's going on with the production, and its implications, in the 'spoiler' threads, and won't be dithering much with rumours, once other (more tangible) stuff is available to talk about. Frankly, this negativity and 'picking at' stuff is a bit tiring for me. But others can no doubt take up the slack...

Don't get me wrong, Barry, I enjoy the byplay about abstracts when there is no alternative, but I much prefer to know what's really going on...especially now, as I have come to fully appreciate how much animus has been lined up against the current production---and its unfortunate principal. Simply shooting arrows holds no attraction for me...

Let me reply to several posts.

Loeffs - I would like to respond to the known rather than rumor too. Now if Eon would give us some news, we would have something to talk about. I have said before, that Eon is their own worst enemy allowing these rumors and insider reports spread. The internet has changed things. Rumors fly around in a second. If you want to present a positive picture you control the news. Don't blame the posters for discussing what they read on blogs and entertainment websites. Blame Eon for not giving us anything to discuss. I believe that insider post from MI6 that Eon's production is troubled. I just can't believe when they started production they had Thandie Newton in mind.

Blade - When I wrote my post concerning not wanting to see the dark side of Bond I thought of you. because I know you do want to see that side, which is fine. I knew you would respond by saying you do want to see that side and I believe we have others around here that do to. You mentioned Dalton's Bond, I liked LTK very much and if that is as dark as Bond gets I have no problem with that. What I don't want to see is Bond wallowing around in self misery, bemoaning his life. I believe one poster said he wanted to see Bond the alchohlic and drug user. That is what I don't want to see. I found Moore's Bond movies too light, so I don't think I am in the camp of the more silly productions like MR. That is why I enjoyed Brosnan's Bond I felt he found the right mix, until the second half on DAD. I also liked dalton's Bond, so I would be happy with a movie like that too.

What Is the Matrix - I get asked, don't I want something different all the time. My answer is I don't mind different levels of the Bond formula, i just don't want to completly reinvent him. What do all the better Bond films (FRWL, GF, TB, YOLT, TSWLM, GE, TWINE) have in common, they were all entertaining and fun. Some had more suspense than others and some were more serious than others, but they all made the Bond formula work just right. That is what I want.

I more than agree with you about those films as frwl,gf,tswlm,ge and twine are all my favorites along with a few others. I too do not want them to stray too far from the original formular but what i do whant from the films is a little more suspence and seriousness. Criag can bring that to his films.

I predict they'll compromise on the alcoholism and drug use: booze and martinis, yes. But benzedrine has gone out of favour. :))

As an avid listener to the breakfast show I was very eager to hear what DC had to say to the OC. I thought Daniel Craig came across brilliantly, good natured, humouress and an all round decent bloke. I thought the Virgin Radio Bond Theme with all the Bonds was hysterical. I urge all of you to down load the podcast.

    Have a nice weekend guys.

    Ant.
