What an absolutely blisteringly awesome series Life On Mars was. I think it's safe to say that it's already in the annals of history as one of TV's greats - and they're few and far between these days. Every episode was gripping and the characters, even the morally dubious ones, were connectable.

Fabulous ending too - and I was worried that that's where it would all go horribly wrong.

yes you're right,it was a wonderful ending.i've watched this from the 1st episode and was afraid the ending would be a letdown.but it wasn't,a classic ending to a classic series.lets hope when lost(another series i've watched from the start)finaly ends we get an ending as good as this.

Thanks to Lady Rose for the info. I think this might be one of those cases where fans take ownership of the end and develop their own theories. Overall I'm glad they ended it like this.

Really ? Everybody I've spoken too felt the ending was poor, a big let down in fact, can't comment personally though as I've never watched it.

There's a very good piece with the writer here which explains exactly what it all meant and why he wrote it that way:

    http://blogs.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/ianwylie/2007/04/life_on_mars_the_answers.html

And although I'm a little dubious at the sound of Ashes To Ashes (sounds like they're just trying to do Life On Mars without John Simm rather than a new concept from these press releases); two things will ensure I watch it: Gene Hunt; and an Audi Quattro!
"Ray, fire up the Quattro!" :D

Here's a bit of fun- a trailer for the US version of Life On Mars! The pilot has been approved and it's going to series on ABC.

I don't think it looks all that bad (with a few reservations- it seems to be leaning on the original a bit heavily here- I'm hoping it can find a bit more of a unique direction; plus it's all a bit, y'know- sunny), plus Gene is very well cast:

Nice One Em. I'm looking forward to this. I'm hoping that it does for American 1970's pop-culture, what the Brit version did over here. But I agree with you about the direction of the show. I hope they aren't just recycling.

Yeah; I'm willing to give it a chance though as it's only the pilot and it's quite natural to start where the successful original left off- then hopefully go somewhere new with it. Worked for The Office.

Looks good to me and its got Colm Meaney in who's always watchable. It does look identical, but thats not a bad thing imo. Hope we get it this side of the pond ...

Rumour has it that BBC Two are looking to get it for either late Autumn or next Summer.

I hope if the american Life on Mars does continue after the pilot that they go off on their own tangent with their own story instead of copying the UK version like they seem to have done with the pilot.

even many of the shots match with ones in the first episode of Life on Mars series 1.

Colm Meaney Looks good as Gene but AmericaSam? he's no John Simm.

    ANDDD

why does AmericaAnnie sound and behave just as "modern day" as Sam? has Annie become a cliche Hollywood Tough Gal in a mans world? say it ain't so.

and don't get me started on the 70s music.

It'll be interesting to see how they run with this - US tv series tend to have more episodes per series than over here, so expect some fresh storylines as well as copying the UK ones. Colm Meaney is always watchable and I'd like to see his 'take' on Gene Hunt. There is ONLY ONE Gene Hunt though ;)

Yeah- I wonder if they'll stick with the Sam-being-in-every-scene system. That was pretty much the nail in the coffin for our version as it meant so much work for Simm, and Ashes to Ashes hasn't repeated that- Alex isn't always on camera.
There's a shot in the trailer of Sam in his hospital bed which is an interesting variation.

i love life on mars so much in fact I am looking into buying that ford cortina mark iii a replica of course

life on mars series 1 and 2 were 100 point perfect...

I have heard a few people compare it to the sweeney .... as much as I love the sweeney it its own right i see them as very different shows although same genre...

they are in leagues of there own but equal in entertainment action and value... etc

ashes to ashes was also great and i look forward to its second series.... the gal in it sure is a hotty.. I would love her to be the new moneypenny opposite daniel craigs bond.

Apparently the new version is in all kinds of trouble. David E Kelley has walked, and it seems the pilot is going to be shelved, and a new one filmed in New York. There may also be cast changes, but the article does not indicate if that will involve either of the two leads.

Well, they've ditched Colm Meany as well, but they've replaced him with... and brace yourself for this:

    Harvey Keitel.

    Blimey.

{[] That is wonderful casting. It does see to indicate that they are going for a much tougher approach than the original pilot trailer seemed to indicate.

I've never seen LIfe on Mars but I love Harvey Keitel, so if the American version comes to Australia, I'll definitely watch it. :D

The whole pilot leaked out- I think it's probably available for torrenting or something; haven't tried myself. Consensus seems to be that it follows the original a bit too much.

Still, Keitel, eh? Didn't see that coming. There's some chap from the Sopranos playing Ray as well. Seems worth a look.

It does seem like they are going for much tougher casting. Michael Imperioli was Christopher in 'The Sopranos' ... we just need Joe Pesci in there and we'll have a real gangsters paradise :))

Cant say I'm unhappy with the new casting, though I did like Colm Meaney. The budget must have been substantially increased.

Got hold of a copy. It follows the UK version exactly. It's not as bad as I've heard, but it is so much like the original, that there is nothing distinct about it. ABC seem to understand this with the way they have relocated and recast. Although I'm surprised they kept Jason O'Mara. John Simm is an actor I find to be profoundly irritating, but at least he had a personality. O'Mara will have to raise his game if he's going to be working with Harvey Keitel and Michael Imperoli.

Well they're running little trails for it already:
    http://abc.go.com/primetime/lifeonmars/index?pn=index

(which are right on the button if you ask me)

Plus the first pics of the stars on set have appeared:

    Sam Tyler

    Gene Hunt

    Check out Gene's shoes!

I've got a better feeling about it this time.

{[] Em. The trailer that loaded there seemed to comprise of shots from the binned pilot. But the interview with the producers and O'Mara was interesting. Especially the bit about altering the mythology of the show. I think they are going to take this in a different direction and make what happens to Sam more mysterious, which is a good thing.

As a huge fan of LoM...I just took a peak of this trailer..and I have to say, the voice over (whether it's the tone or the fact it's so "movie trailerish"..for me) just doesn't quite get it right. Perhaps I'm too prejudice. :#

It will be interesting to see how it goes down in the States. (I'm just not sure that for me I would get all the subtle references made about the US in the 70's, just like expecting the American's to get ours in our version)..but then I'm sure I missed half of Forrest Gump for that entire reason! :D

From the responses from Americans I've heard, they've got that voiceover just right- he's just like a very famous voiceover guy they had in the 70's.
