You liked Outrun 2? REALLY?? Wow. Not my type of racer. I don't believe they have PGR1, my favorite racer, on BC yet either.

Well, fellas...until I take that leap into 360 fandom, perhaps we can hook up in CR's poker table? I'm over there all of the time.

It's a guilty pleasure. I liked Outrun because of its shallowness; it was a really relaxing game to just pass the time. And I was a fan of the old arcade game. It was the definition of plug and play. Once you mastered the drift (which wasn't hard) you could just take off and fly down those roads. I also liked the graphics, the courses really looked pretty in widescreen and 480p.

Given my aversion to all things CR, I've never really explored their online poker game. I'll try to bring myself to look into it in the next day or so, but I make no promises.

Bringing this back to topic (somebody had to), EA and Criterion have announced Burnout 5 for 2007 release on Xbox360 and PS3 (but no Wii announcement yet). Now this is something I'm looking forward to. I've always loved the Burnout games for their over the top action and absolutely amazing speed.

    http://xbox360.ign.com/articles/728/728950p1.html

As an aside, Burnout Revenge for the 360 is now selling for around $40. If you've never played it you should check it out. Even though it's a port of the Xbox original, the visuals are top notch, the speed is intoxicating, and it's one of the most fun games to play online. Burnout 3: Takedown for the Xbox is also now backwardly compatible as of the last BC update.

I've honestly never met anyone that I know who has played BURNOUT so I'm a bit curious about this title. I've passed by this game in the past for whatever reasons...

    How many in the franchise?

There have been 4 games so far. Burnout 3: Takedown and Burnout: Revenge are by far the best of the lot.

They are racing games with the added twist that they encourage and reward your taking out other cars (both computer controlled traffic and other players online). There's a boost meter on your car and the more opponents you crash, the faster you can go. The environments are varied but always take place on pavement. And the speed is blistering. On the 360 version of Revenge, the cars go so fast that the paint literally falls off the cars during the course of the race.

There's all kinds of different race modes: hot laps, normal races, elimination races, and road rage events where you have to take out a set number of cars before a time limit. Also, the games have several crash modes where you have to try to crash your car in such a way as to cause as much damage as possible (the computer tallies up the cost of all the vehicles destroyed). The crashes can get very intricate and often involve your hitting the right vehicle to start a chain reaction, thus maximizing the amount of damaged caused.

As you progress thru the different modes faster cars for racing and bigger and heavier vehicles (armored cars, fire engines, etc.) for crashing are unlocked.

The Burnout games are very easy to get into but all the different modes mean you'll take a long time to beat everything. The games are not realistic (after a bad crash in a race, your car magically repairs itself) and the controls definitely lean toward arcade racers. So if you prefer realistic, simulation style racing this may not be your cup of tea. But for fast action they can't be beat.

I bought Burnout 3 after renting Burnout 1 and 2 which were great. I was really let down- although it seems like it would be exciting, it just felt repetitive and often when I crashed it was cheap and due to no mistake on my part, causing me to restart. What a pain. It just got stale very quickly for me. That having been said, I played a demo of Revenge and it seemed really really good.

Oh yeah, make no mistake, if you want a gold medal on a particular event, you have to be almost perfect. One slip and its time to restart the race. That's true of a lot of racers however and when you get "in the zone", Burnout: Revenge in particular is a lot of fun.

I went back to Ghost Recon AW after not playing it for a long tme, and it is still my favorite 360 game. I just love it. I hope they come out with another expansion pack, this time with different pistols.

I like 'Ghost Recon Advance Warfighter' a lot too. Really good game. I also have 'Perfect Dark Zero'. It's an OK game. I'm having a really hard time going through it again because it's such a let down. Not nearly as good as the first one on the Nintendo64. The third game I have on the 360 is 'Tomb Raider Legend'. I like the game a lot. Really fun to go through. It's the first 'Tomb Raider' game that I played, so I can't compare it to other games in the series. I might get another 360 game in the next couple of days. I don't know what yet. I might get the 360 version of 'The Godfather' when it come out in mid-September. 'Splinter Cell: Double Agent' comes out in October. I'll be getting that one.

Sounds to me like you have a preference for action and 1st person shooter titles there xman. If so, you may want to check out Quake IV for the 360. It just dropped in price and is a great 1st person shooter with tons of action, varied weapons and great graphics. You even get to pilot vehicles in some of the levels. It also comes with a pixel-perfect port of Quake 2 on a bonus disk.

Condemned: Criminal Origins is another very good 1st person shooter with a survival horror angle and very realistic, "in-your-face" graphics. It was also recently reduced in price.

Also, check out some of the backwardly compatible Xbox games. Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory, Doom 3, and Black all run super-smooth on the 360 and get a nice graphical facelift as well. All three games can be had for around $20 each.

Hope you're enjoying your 360. Happy gaming.

I have 'Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory' for the original XBOX. I still play the XBOX a lot. I bought 'Gun' today for the XBOX 360. I've never played a Western game before.

Gun was a lot of fun; I really loved the slo-mo gunplay once I got used to the controls. Sadly, the 360 version really doesn't take advantage of the machine's graphical power. But it is still a good game.

You should pop Chaos Theory in your 360 sometime. You might be surprised by the visual upgrade the 360 gives the game.

Don't you have to download something in order to play an XBOX game on the 360?

If you have Xbox Live; the process is automatic. Just pop an Xbox game into the 360 and the console will download the emulator. If you don't have Xbox Live, you can either download the emulator from their site ( www.xbox.com ) from a PC and burn it onto a disc or get if off the DVD that comes with the Official Xbox Magazine that's available in most newstands and bookstores. You then pop the disc into the 360 and it copies the emulator code to the console.

If you have Live, you don't even have to think about it. As Tony says, it does it automatically, and it does it FAST.
  • xman25xman25 Houston, TexasPosts: 80MI6 Agent
Yeah, I downloaded the emulator file from the XBOX official site last night. I put it on a CD and than put it in my 360. Works fine. Aside from High Definition, does playing XBOX games on the 360 add anything graphically? Better frame rate, smoother textures, better draw distance, etc?

Generall speaking, the biggest improvements are higher resolution and smoother textures. Framerate pretty much stays the same, but I find some games load faster thru emulation than on the original Xbox.

Microsoft says that the 360 is 80 times more powerful than the first XBOX.

Yes but they didn't rewrite the code for any of the XBOX 1 games, they simply made them playable. If they were to rewrite the code for a more powerful machine, that would make a difference. But they aren't intended to look like Xbox 360 games- if they did that for free, why would anybody buy new 360 games when all of their old games look just as good?

Good points Night. BC is a bonus (although a welcome one to be sure). It lets you get rid of your old Xbox, still be able to play many of the old games, and give them a face lift. To expect more would be really unreasonable, and not very smart from a business standpoint.

Also, while the 360 is much more powerful than its predecessors, I honestly don't think we've seen nearly what it can do. Most of the games released so far have been ports of PC games (Prey, Oblivion, etc.), upgrades of last-gen console games (Tomb Raider, Gun, Tony Hawk, Far Cry, etc.) or native 360 games that didn't have nearly enough development time (PGR3, Condemned, PDZ, etc.).

They all look and play great but I have a feeling that this holiday season is when we see what the 360 can really do. Games like Gears of War, Forza 2 and Mass Effect (and of course Halo 3 next year) will really showcase the console's abilities.

I see Playstation 3 will be delayed in Europe, gee I feel so bad for Sony. :p

Just wondering if anyone knows how sales of the 360 have been? I also heard that Microsoft may cut prices about the time of the PS3 release. Seems to me that Microsoft should play up the price difference between the 360 and PS3 during the holidays. I don't know about other parents, but a couple hundred bucks makes a difference to me.

Yes, so sad. I really feel their pain :)) :))

Obviously, the initial frenzy has long died down and consoles are readily available at most outlets; but from what I read sales have been fine.

Given the fact that the PS3 hardware is already so much more expensive, and the fact that the PS3 will be so scarce this holiday season (only 400,000 units for the USA), and the fact that MS appears to have such a strong lineup of games coming out for the holidays, I don't think they'll even need to lower the price of the 360. Really, Sony is doing all the right things as far as MS is concerned.

The official word from MS is that no price drop is planned. Of course, they won't even admit to such a thing until a few days before such a drop is implemented. Given that MS is losing money on every console sold (the old razor blade sales model) I think MS will only lower the price of the 360 when they can produce the console more inexpensively, and not before. But of course, anything could happen.
