It is gorgeous, though.
I tried to do a versus against the Borg... it did not go well.
) The same thing happened to me; I tried to command Kirk's Enterprise, the 1701-A, and got blasted into space dust fighting a Klingon ship. That's when I put it away until I could really focus on it. It does look nice though.

Yes. I was Kirking it up and losing to many different enemies. I would like to go back to it, but I'm going to focus on Indigo Prophecy and Shenmue II when I get them. I'm also really hoping to get Rainbow Six Vegas, Gears of War, and SC Double Agent. Damn you $60 price point!

That's what Amazon.com is for.
I think Splinter Cell for the 360 has droppped in price; thought I saw it for $30 at Best buy.
Of the three you're looking into, I actually like Rainbow 6: Vegas the best, followed by Splinter Cell and then Gears of War. They're all really great games but the action and squad combat in R6:V is really well done and it and SC:DA have the beefiest single player campaigns. But really, you can't go wrong with any of them.

And you certainly can't go wrong with all of them.

Actually, I rotate my games around alot so I rarely pay full price. I got Splinter Cell as part of the buy 2 get 1 free deal at Toys 'R Us. Gears of War only cost me $20 since I traded in some games and did a prebuy on it. Rainbow 6 was the only game I paid full price; it was a Christmas present to myself.
You just gotta shop smart.

To change topics just for fun...
Sometimes when I play a 360 game, I think to myself that 360 games really don't look much better than Xbox 1 games. And then I go back to playing Xbox 1 games and think "What on earth was I saying? The 360 blows this out of the water."
Seriously, jaggies were AWFUL on Xbox 1. Textures, too. Guess I just didn't notice before. The 360 just spoils me.
I'm trying to think of an example... um... how about Battlefield 2? I was playing it and saying "These are great graphics, but are they really that much better than Xbox 1 graphics?" And when I look at 1, the answer is always a resounding yes.
That having been said, I still think that PGR1 is not only the best playing PGR, but the best looking. The cars looked so realistic in that game. Now they don't look real, they look too wet. In PGR2 they looked too... dry.
Am I making much sense at all? Perhaps I should go to sleep...
Yeah that makes sense. I was playing Justice League Heros on the old Xbox today and while it looked nice, I kept thinking to myself how Marvel Ultimate Alliance for the 360 (which was basically the same kind of game) looked so much better. There were lots of little things: the cinemas were sharper, the explosions and similar effects more colorful, 4 simultaneous players instead of 2, more layers of parallax scrolling, more intricate levels, and so forth. Both games are fun and look very nice, but the 360 game just had more of everything.
As for PGR, its hard for me to compare since I don't have it anymore but its important to remember that PGR3 is running in widescreen at a higher resolution and has more objects to move around the screen.
Of course, if we were to listen to Ken Kutaragi, the 360 is only the Xbox v1.5.
NightshooterIn bed with SolitairePosts: 2,917MI6 Agent
Does that mean that the PS3 is only PS2.5 as well? Because last time I checked, word on the street is that Gears of War looks every bit as good as Resistance Fall of Man if not better...

Actually, seeing as PS2 games look like garbage on the PS3 (jaggies everywhere) and the PS3 downscales 720p games on 1080i TV sets, I guess the PS3 is really the PS1.75.

I want to watch a gang fight. The Microsoft guys versus the Sony guys. Then we'd see Ken get his arse kicked. Because we all know Steve Ballmer would kill him.

But seriously, I could do without all the rhetoric from both sides. Just make the systems, make the games and let the market decide what's best. All that trash talk is just so childish.

Am I wrong in saying that it comes more from Sony than the big M?
Am I wrong in saying that it comes more from Sony than the big M?
I don't think you're wrong. Between saying and doing everything possible to justify the bloated price of the PS3, calling the 360 Xbox 1.5, and saying that anything short of 1080p is not true HD (even though many PS3 games don't support that resolution and actually downscale instead) Sony has definitely been sticking its foot in its mouth a lot lately.
Anyhow, now that the holidays are over and the hardcore early adopters got theirs, I think we can put the PS3 in perspective. It's starting to look a lot like the PSP: positive early buzz despite a high price tag, solid if unspectacular sales out of the gate, and then stagnation and lots of consoles sitting on store shelves when the initial hoopla has worn off and new software has all but dried up. The Nintendo DS all but killed the PSP and the combined sales of 360 and Wii could do the same to the PS3. The average consumer who only sees the PS3 as a games machine is unwilling or unable to pony up $600. Unless things change dramatically, I wouldn't be surprised to see a price drop by late spring, especially as there really isn't any "must buy" title on the horizon for several months at least and the holidays is when these companies make the bulk of their hardware sales.
NightshooterIn bed with SolitairePosts: 2,917MI6 Agent
Get a load of this: Gabe Newell of Valve has labeled the PS3 a total disaster. HAHAHAHA.
He also thinks the Wii will win the console war. We'll see, Mr. Newell.
Yeah, the PS3 is danger of quickly being written off. Perception is everything and if the negative articles continue (and there have been quite a few lately), they could be out of the running before the console war really even gets started. There was also an article over at IGN about how Sony has shipped 2 million PS3s, but they're just sitting on shelves both in America and Japan. Sony could of course turn it all around with a price drop and or a killer title, but right now it really is starting to look like the PSP all over again.
As for the Wii, don't underestimate its popularity. They're still flying off the shelves and while I prefer the 360 by a country mile I have to concede that the Wii is a very very popular system that could win this round. They're cheap and are popular across a wide demographic. Nintendo have great momentum right now, it remains to be seen what they do with it in the weeks and months to come.
First, Command and Conquer 3 is coming 2 the 360 and will include 3 extra multiplayer modes.
Second, a game called Shadowrun combines magic and gunplay, and is coming for PC/360. The twist is that 360 players play against 360 players and visa-versa...awesome...just awesome...
And damn you Gamestop and your "you have to be over 18 to buy M rated games!"

Came across this article about the 360, it seems Microsoft intends to make the 360 a complete entertainment center, including digital recording. I am more and more convinced that Microsoft is headed in the right direction with the 360. People want more than gaming and Microsoft is giving it to them. Recently saw another article that said something like 40% of Xbox 360 owners did not have an Xbox previously. That tells me they are reaching out and expanding their audience.
This would seem to tie in with the rumors of an enhanced 360 with HDMI support and a larger hard drive although I'm sure any new hard drive will be made available as a separate SKU for people who already own the console.
I think 360 has the PS3 covered for the forseeable future; Sony's console is proving to be too expensive, has too few games available, and BluRay is something of a white elephant for the average consumer. Consoles are languishing on store shelves both in America and Japan and I don't see them reversing their fortunes unless they drop the price and release some really compelling games.
Nintendo is another story though. Even though the system is clearly underpowered it still flies off shelves. It remains to be seen if they can carry that momentum or if the Wiimote will become a fad in a few months time but right now Nintendo is swimming in green. You do have to give Nintendo credit for focusing on games almost 100% and staying the course; they've really stayed away from the whole entertainment hub model that Microsoft and Sony seem to covet. I think that focus on gameplay to the exclusion of all else is what has put them on solid footing this time around, so far.

I hate to break it to you guys, but the Wii is way overrated. Sure you can swing your arms around like Mozart and feel cool, but the games are distressingly bad and very ugly...id say that the Wii appears to be the flop for gaming, not the PS3...which has some good titles coming up.

Gotta disagree with you to a certain point 0064. The Wiimote does improve the gameplay in certain types of games. Having played the Golf minigame on Wii Sports, I never want to go back to using the control pad and those crazy meters to control the swing. Same goes for other games where the Wiimote lets you mimic the motion like tennis and baseball. Don't knock it till you try it. I was a former skeptic I can tell you that it does make a difference.
I also wouldn't call all of the games "distressingly bad". Nintendo's first party stuff, mainly Zelda: Twilight Princess, Excite Truck and Wii Sports are all lots of fun and Zelda & Excite look pretty good too. There's no denying that they do look primitive compared to the 360 and PS3, everybody pretty much knew that going in. Nintendo was hoping the Wiimote would compensate for that and, so far at least, they appear to have been right as consumers love this thing and it continues to sell well (anywhere from 2 to 5 million units depending on who you ask).
And remember this: Nintendo is the only one of the big three who actually makes money on the console as well as the games, so they're laughing all the way to the bank.
As for the PS3, there are some interesting games in the pipeline (I'm really curious about Warhawk and F1) but the $500 and $600 pricepoints continue to be an obstacle for many consumers (I believe that's at least part of the reason you haven't been able to pick one up yet, if I'm not mistaken). It also remains to be seen if Sony will be able to get more games out in a timely fashion or if software development will lag as it did in the early days of the PS2 and PSP. It also doesn't help that many developers continue to gripe about how hard the PS3 is to work with. Given that consumers have more choices this time around those problems are quickly putting the PS3 in a very precarious position.
Don't get me wrong, I'm an avowed Xbox 360 fan; it is my system of choice and the one that I hope succeeds. I also agree that the Wii is overrated and it could easily degenerate into a "fad" system if Nintendo goes all cute and furry. But you can't deny the numbers as they stand today. Go visit a few electronics stores one of these days, I guarantee you won't find a Wii anywhere, but there is a very good chance you'll see more than a few PS3's lying around.

Actually, Tony, I'm pretty sure Msoft now makes money for every 360.
I still haven't played the Wii, but you can't argue with sales figures.
As for the PS3, the only interesting thing coming for it is Lair. Which looks pretty cool. And MGS4. But that is it. I'd take Mass Effect, Bioshock, Halo 3, etc etc any day of the week.

Check out what Mr. Gates has to say about the 360, IPTV, Sony, and Hard Drives.
He skirts the Hard Drive issue by saying that you can stream IPTV, so you don't need a bigger hard drive, even though in the same sentence he mentions downloading from XBL Marketplace.
I recently downloaded Superman Returns to my 360, and it took up 7 GBs of space. I had to delete a ridiculous amount of stuff. To watch one movie. In 720p, of course, but still. I want a 100GB HD. For less than $200. Less than $150 would be REALLY nice.

Yeah, if I download two episodes of Star Trek in HD I've pretty much used up half my hard drive (and I don't keep anything other than a few Xbox Live Arcade games and some addons for Oblivion).
The Xbox Live Video Marketplace, as it is currently set up, requires that you download videos directly to your console for viewing; and every week more and more content is being made available in this way. So, unless Microsoft completely revamps how XBLM works in the very near future (very unlikely) I have a feeling larger capacity drives are going to be available and relatively soon.
Alternately, they might come up with some way to let you download Xbox Live Video content to your PC and then let you stream it from there to the 360.
As for IPTV, I don't know the bandwidth requirements but if it is anything like the video marketplace then DSL probably won't cut it (it takes me about 2 hours to download a 52 minute show in HD with DSL) and broadband via cable is still very expensive in many areas.
