The MotoGP demo showed up a few days ago; I downloaded NASCAR 08 instead (bad move). I'm also curious about the Overlord demo as that has gotten some good word of mouth. And I'll definitely try out Gundam. I'll hopefully be able to check them all out over the next few days.
I'm also hearing MS will have a bunch of videos from the San Diego Comic Con up over the weekend; maybe they'll put up the Iron Man trailer.
I've gotten way too many games lately:
Forza 2 (this is occupying most of my gaming time; I'm at level 29)
DiRT (played a few races; fun but I haven't touched it in weeks)
FIFA World Cup ($20 at Sears; 1000 easy achievement points if I ever get back to it)
NHL 07 ($20 at Best Buy, handn't bought a hockey game since the Genesis)
Resistance: Fall of Man ($40 from Amazon, played the first level, very impressed)
F1 (got it more for my brother but I want to run a few races too)
God of War ($20 at Target; never played before as I didn't have a PS2)
GT4 ($10 at Toys 'R Us; wanted to compare it to Forza; it's going back)
Killzone ($20 at Toys 'R Us; wanted to compare it to Xbox FPS games; it's probably going back too).
Played the Gundam demo a little more, and I think it is awesome. Really pretty Gundams and explosions. Also, the combat is solid if a little repetitive, but it isn't boring at all. I think you kill something like 600 enemies in the demo, so the fact that I didn't get bored at all shows how much I liked the game. There are mini bosses throughout the level, and a final boss. The best way to take care of them is to build up your special attack and fire that at them until they die, while occasionaly meleeing them. I've found that blocking isn't all that effective against bosses, but the dash button is incredibly useful, and fun.
Tony, try this game and let me know what you think. By the way, the Gundam in the demo is one of my personal favorites, Wing Zero, piloted by Heero Yui. You also fight another of my favorite Gundams, Epyon, piloted by Miliardo Peacecraft, who, although only being a sub-boss, is the toughest enemy in the level.
I just played thru the demo and beat the end boss (Musha Gundam??). I was able to hack my way thru most of the demo primarily with my melee attack and occasional use of my special attack. I don't think I ever blocked once. It took a while to figure out what was going on and when each section had been cleared. Pretty good demo (and it was very nice of the developers to keep the difficulty down to a reasonable level) but not really my kind of game. The button mashing can get repetitive after a while and I've never been a big fan of that Japanese anime style of artwork or storytelling. It's well made for what it is but just not my thing.
Tried the MotoGP 07 demo too; only one track (Laguna Seca) but graphics are very detailed and the bikes control well, with a much more forgiving driving model that allows you to dial in the sensitivity of the bikes. It seems friendlier than previous MotoGP games but, as you said, with PGR4 offering bikes I'm in no hurry to get this one. Heck, if I could find MotoGP 06 for under $20 I'd probably just get that.
And as an FYI to RogueAgent, FEAR just got marked down to $29.99 at Gamestop/EBGames.

You can switch ranged attacks and melee attacks to create combos and other, new attacks. I've actually played it again and again, trying different strategies just for fun. If you use your allies, the game becomes much easier. If you try to lone wolf it, some bosses can devastate you before you get a chance to stand up. I'm glad you thought it was well done, Tony. Tell me, did the bosses gang up on you at all? In a few of the tries, (I only lost once), I had a new boss attack me while I was fighting with another boss, so I had to fight off two of them at a time.
I downloaded the MotoGP demo, have yet to play it.
I did play the Darkness demo, and didn't really like it. I won't be purchasing that game.

Tried the MotoGP demo, and it was a bit too forgiving. I'm sure in the game you can change the difficulty level.
Anyway, it was an absolutely gorgeous game, with not a single jaggy line to be found. Color me impressed.
However, Tony, it has two tracks. You have to switch the type of race to Extreme, which is the Autobahn track.
Night, none of the bosses ganged up on me in the DW demo; it worked out that I had at least one ally when I faced off against most of them so the combat wound up being pretty easy.
I didn't realize there was a second track on MotoGP 07, I'll have to fire it up again today. I like the more forgiving control scheme, seems friendlier than past MotoGP games. It just takes a bit of getting used to because I'm always using the triggers to accelerate and break.
I tried out the demo to Overlord today; it was a lot of fun and very funny, in a dark twisted sort of way.
You control a recently resurrected dark lord who spends the game seeking to reacquire his lost wealth and power while refurnishing his looted castle. You can wield weapons and cast destructive magic spells.
The highlight of the demo however is your ability to control small gremlin-like characters called minions. As the game progresses, the number of type of minions you control increases. They will help you by gleefully attacking enemies, moving obstacles, acquiring loot, and even sacrificing themselves to restore your health. The minions animations are all very well done: unleash them on a band of unsuspecting travellers or other objects and they'll create all kinds of mayhem and bring you all the spoils.
Overlord was a very well done demo with a great art style and some very cleverly realized characters. The game has also gotten some very positive reviews. I just may pick this one up sooner rather than later.

I wasn't in love with the Overlord demo. It was ok, but it seemed that in order to overcome puzzles, all you needed was the right amount of gremlins.

The demo holds your hand a lot but I've read later puzzles get a lot more complex and require you to use the right kind of minion for each situation. Some of the achievements also sound like fun.
Normally I don't go for these RTS style games but I found myself laughing out loud while playing the demo. This game's art style, sense of humor and the minions' mischievious personality are winning me over.

Tony, here's an unrelated question: what do you think of the Halo 3 Legendary Edition? It is SO expensive, but I kind of want it.
Tony, here's an unrelated question: what do you think of the Halo 3 Legendary Edition? It is SO expensive, but I kind of want it.
From what I've read, the Legendary Edition exclusives are the plastic helmet and a bonus disk with remastered cinematics from the first two games, developer commentaries, a featurette "life at Bungie". There are also supposed to be some featurettes from the guys who do the Red vs. Blue skits.
Frankly, none of that stuff interests me in the slightest (other than maybe the remastered cinemas from the first two movies). $130 is a lot for any game, especially as there is so much other good stuff coming out this fall. I don't think that extra material is worth the premium price unless you're a hardcore Halo fan. Making the room to store that monster will also be a chore.
As such I'll probably be getting the $70 Limited Edition. It has some extra features, a nice metal case, and it's only $10 more than the standard game.
Here's a link to Xbox.com's page on the game and what each versions has.
Speaking of Halo, here's a bit of interesting Halo 3 news: the game will allow for up to 4 players to play co-operatively over Xbox Live. That level of interaction has been pretty much unheard of in console games until now. Have a read on for more info, straight from the official Bungie website:
For anyone thinking about buying an Xbox 360, Microsoft has just dropped the price of the consoles. The new prices are $280 for the Core model; $350 for the Premium version and $450 for the black Elite edition.
NightshooterIn bed with SolitairePosts: 2,917MI6 Agent
They really should've dropped the Core to $250 to compete with the cheap-as-hell Wii.
They really should've dropped the Core to $250 to compete with the cheap-as-hell Wii.
Yes, they should have instituted the $50 price drop for all versions of the 360; that, combined with their strong fall and winter lineup would have really boosted sales.
Still, I think MS views Sony as their chief competitor and with the new pricepoints the 360 is even less expensive than the PS3 than before. As for the Wii, it's really a different class of machine: no hi-def, less power, no multimedia or entertainment hub capabilities and a vastly different control scheme.
Interestingly, MS's XNA development platform (which can be used to develop games for PC's and 360's) now includes support for the Wiimote and Nunchuck. So, in theory, you could create Wiimote enabled games for the 360.

Well if you ever get moving and get back online, maybe you, me, Night and Barry can try a 4 player co-op session someday. It's a pretty safe bet that we'll all be getting Halo 3 on or near launch day.
BTW, with regard to the Xbox 360 price drop; there are rumors circulating around that one of the reasons MS instituted the new prices was to clear out stock in anticipation of the quiet rollout of a new hardware revision of the 360 which will include the 65nm chips (for cooler opration) and an HDMI port on all of the SKU's - core, premium and elite. MS of course will neither confirm nor deny this rumor. According to the rumor, the new 360s will start appearing in late August or early September.

Been on the road alot again, but I see we are all eagerly awaiting the Halo 3 release. I will have a copy on day one, probably the limited edition version. I understand Microsoft has preorders for 1 million copies and the Legendary Edition is almost sold out.
My youngest son has become a Halo fanatic and spends time on a website called Halopedia. I may have to fight him for controller time.

Limited Edition for me as well; I haven't pre-ordered though. I'm sure there will be plenty to go around come September 25, just as there was with Halo 2, Gears of War, and just about every other high profile game. One million presells is a pretty impressive feat. That's another 60-70 million bucks in the bank for Bill Gates.
As for your son hogging the console, it looks like you'll just have to get another 360 for your personal use.

Tony, just to keep you abreast of things, RA has returned, on my request, the role of Cap in our upcoming MUA-fest. Which makes me hapy, because Cap is the most fun character to play for me. I wish there was a costume choice with his regular (classic) costume but his WW2 shield. I like the WW2 shield best, and I like when Cap uses the Smithsonian shield.
Tony, RA was deciding between Thing, Thor, Luke Cage, and (maybe) Dr. Strange. I haven't played any of these guys, so maybe you can give him some input on those characters?

Thor is a very powerful character with some useful special attacks including one that can temporarily boost the stats of his teammates. Thing is strong but slow. Dr. Strange is not physically strong but has some useful special attacks. Haven't really played with Luke Cage.
From this bunch, definitely Thor. Also, if we assemble an Avengers team (Cap, Thor, Iron Man and maybe Ms. Marvel) it will automatically boost the stats of all the players.
Rogue's other option would be to buy Hulk from the marketplace as it is supposed to be one of his favorite characters.
I know too much about this game, don't I.
NightshooterIn bed with SolitairePosts: 2,917MI6 Agent
I downloaded the Heroes and Villains pack just for fun, even though I'm not sure I really like any of the characters. I like Hawkeye even though I know nothing about him. But I'm not sure I'd really play as any of them.
By the way, we're kind of doing a classic MUA thing. Nobody is going to be using their hero's current costume. I think that is kind of cool.
Is it possible to have two people playing on the same box? Because if so, RA's son or Tony's brother could play the 4th hero.
Is it possible to have two people playing on the same box? Because if so, RA's son or Tony's brother could play the 4th hero.
Believe it or not, I only have one pad for my 360 as my brother and I never seem to play against one another. As such, I don't know if two people can play on the same console. I may get a second pad soo though as he says he wants to do some two player Forza and Justice League.
BTW Night, did you try the demo to John Woo's Stranglehold? I just played thru it and it's a lot of fun. You're basically thrust into the center of one of Woo's Hong Kong mafia movies and have to blast everything in your way. The control takes some getting used to but the demo is very forgiving and quite easy (I think they're trying to appeal to a wide audience). Try it out and let me know what you think.
NightshooterIn bed with SolitairePosts: 2,917MI6 Agent
I tried it out this morning, I've been looking forward to it for awhile and it was pretty cool. The visuals weren't as great as I had hoped, and I still thinking the lack of reloading is a little too ridiculous, but it was very cool. I thought it could get quite hard on the hard difficulty, which you unlock after beating it the first time. I think I'll purchase it when the price drops.

I haven't downloaded it yet, but supposedly there is a BioShock demo out on XBL Marketplace starting tonight. Awesome.
I haven't downloaded it yet, but supposedly there is a BioShock demo out on XBL Marketplace starting tonight. Awesome.
I didn't know about the Bioshock demo till this morning. Supposedly, it brought Xbox Live to its knees overnight and it's still a bit sluggish today. I'll try to DL it tonight after work; hopefully by then things will have quieted down a bit. Inital word of mouth on the demo has been very very positive. In particular, the graphics and presentation of the game are said to blow even Gears of War out of the water.
Just played the Bioshock demo; absolutely loved it. This thing oozes atmosphere and ambiance; I quickly got caught up in the story and actually forgot it was only a demo - first time that's ever happened to me.
The plot is really strange, a mixture of first person action, retro sci-fi and horror. You play the survivor of a plane crash who comes across an underwater city called Rapture smack in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. Most of Rapture's inhabitants have mutated into zombie-like monsters as a result of plasmids - DNA enhancing drugs that give the user abilities like being able to shoot lightning bolts and flame. A mysterious person helps and guides you via radio and in return you agree to try to find his family before escaping from the city. Like I said, very unique and bizarre, but in a good way. The plasmid attacks you can unleash are really varied and visually striking and the weapons range from simple wrenches all the way to rocket launchers.
The graphics are great and there are all sorts of neat touches. For example, right after the plane crash, you see the plane's rear fuselage sink into the ocean. A while later, that same section goes crashing thru an access tube you're navigating as you make your way thru the city. As expected of a game that takes place under water, the water effects are first rate. Rapture itself looks like a 1940's version of a futuristic art-deco city. Imagine Gotham City from the Batman animated show underwater and you start get an idea of what it's like. The pictures I'd seen till now don't do the game justice, it has to be seen in movement to really be appreciated.
I was unsure about whether I was going to buy it or not; but after trying it out it will be a release day purchase for sure.

I'm in complete agreement. It was amazing. I have to say I messed up hacking the bot near the end, which caused me to die, but the Vita-Chamber is a cool idea.
I was originally really impressed with this title when I first heard about it, but as time went on I got a little less interested. Well, my interest is WAY back up after this.
