Still not wild about a reboot. Could be the best Trek since Undiscovered Country, I still dislike prequels or glimpses at growing periods of fully established iconic characters. And I'm a heavy duty Original Series man.

I predict that at some point, young Spock will give the Prosperous signal for the very first time. A swelling of music will accompany this.

    Is there a trailer yet?

A full trailer will be released in November and all signs currently point to it being attached to QoS (I posted a blurb about this on the QoS "Ramping up publicity" thread as well).

Abrams & Co. are not really calling this a reboot, so much as an adventure detailing how these characters first met. It's more "Star Trek Begins" than anything else from what I've read. I had my doubts about this but I really like the cast and, finally having started to watch Lost over the past few weeks, I feel much better about their ability to tell a good story.

As a fellow hardcore TOS fan I'm going to keep an open mind and hope for the best. The trailer will probably go a long ways towards allaying (or confirming) people's fears / expectations.

Now that a trailer has been all but officially announced, we're starting to get some real images. The new issue of Entertainment Weekly has some pics including this one of Spock apparently attacking Kirk (courtesy of AICN):

    spock.jpg

You can go here for more info: AICN Trek Info

And here's a pic of another Federation starship, the USS Kelvin, having what looks like a bad day:

    usskelvin1t.jpg

You can go here for more info (and more shots are supposed to show up at this site later): USS Kelvin

Here's a pic of the crew:
    new-trek-smaller.jpg

And you can go here for a larger version and more info: Trek Crew

Here's the cover of the upcoming issue of EW featuring Kirk and Spock; Spock doesn't look quite right here, hopefully just a case of bad lighting and a quick setup for a magazine. Pine on the other hand does remind me a lot of a young Shatner here:

    ew1015trekcover.jpg

There's also a pretty large picture of Romulan bad guy Nero on his ship at http://www.joblo.com (the picture is near the top of the page; the site does not seem to like hot links to images).

My pleasure Loeffs. I've got to admit, as a longtime and hardcore Trek fan, I'm really geeking out on these pics, especially the one of Pine assuming one of those classic Kirkian poses on the bridge. I was a little worried when I'd read that the uniforms were going to be very close to what was on TOS as I was afraid they'd look dated, but they really look good. The new bridge also is very interesting, it reminds me of a painting I once saw of an unused concept for Star Trek: The Motion Picture.

And here's one more image of Kirk getting out of an escape pod on an ice planet.

I was reading that it factors into the story; he's wearing it for a specific reason but will get the classic gold tunic before the end of the film.

Yay miniskirts! And I have to admit, Simon Pegg is looking awfully Doohanish in that group shot. I might give this one a chance.

I'd heard that the reason Trek was pushed back was because of the tremendously positive response it got at advance screenings...Paramount wanted a solid tent-pole 'event' flick for '09...

I forgot how much I miss Trek. Those images look fantastic.

Hope my misgivings are misguided. I would love having another great dvd to blow my speakers with. (Actor playing Spock looks very good)

Give it a chance Alex; to my way of thinking, it can't be any worse than what has passed for Trek over the last 15 years or so.

BTW, the Entertainment Weekly article on the movie is up. Lots of info, a new pic of the USS Kelvin, confirmation that the trailer will premiere in front of QoS, and also some SPOILERS, so read at your own discretion.

Article is here: EW Star Trek Article

Thanks for that- it's good to finally see some stuff from this; it's all looking pretty decent.

Not convinced by the bridge design just yet- it looks like a branch of Specsavers. What are all those spotlights for?

I enjoyed the later ones for their merits. (But hated Kirk's meaningless death)

A fresh, relevant, and inspired story is all we ask for.

    Hopeful ..

If you're referring to the USS Kelvin, its hard to say but from that angle I think it's the secondary hull; and you can just make out what looks like the tip of a single warp drive nacelle under the circular primary hull. Here's a pic of the ship; if you were to flip it upside down, it would look a lot like the familiar Enterprise design:

BTW, there are a few more new pics at Trekmovie.com; nothing special, just closeups of some of the actors in costume. More Trek Photos

And just for laughs, courtesy of Entertainment Weekly, here are Captain Kirk's 20 Best and Worst Moments: Kirk's 20 Best and Worst

    Thanks for the best/worst list, Tony, wonderful stuff -{

I'm not going to read any spoilers though. Keeping it fresh like QoS.

    Nero looks very, um, satanic.

It is reminiscent of the Nebula class with the pod on top; could very well be something like that as its hard to really make out details when you're looking at a 3D object in a 2D picture without being sure of the proportions. There also looks to be a small spaceship on the right.

I'm sure we'll get better views of everything and everyone in the trailer - yet another reason to see QoS opening weekend. ;)

That was a fun read, lots of great Kirk moments there and it also shows that Shatner can be a very effective actor when he needs to be.

My brother pointed out that Nero looks kind of like Barlow from that Salem's Lot TV movie from the mid 1970s and I can see that somewhat as well.

I'm going to try my darndest, but it's going to be really hard for me to stay spoiler free on this one till next May.

Urban looks great as the Doc, and he's a good actor too, judging by LOTR. Bones was always my favorite ST character because, as Kelley himself once put it, he was a "humanistic human being"

I'm not sure about Pine as Kirk, looks like a college frat boy. Too National Lampoon's Van Wilder for my tastes.

Off topic but if anyone remembers the SciFi channel's marathon from around ten years back. There were some great interviews with many people no longer with us. I recorded every one on vhs. Are these available anywhere on dvd?

I had a feeling that Urban would come off as a good Dr. McCoy. He has a way of disappearing into his roles and seems like a down to earth guy. Pretty smart piece of casting IMHO.

I haven't seen in him anything and am curious to see him actually act and hear what his voice sounds like. As I said before, the trailer will probably go a long way towards selling us or confirming our doubts.

They definitely aren't on the DVD's that Paramount released. Since they were commissioned by the SciFi Channel, I'm inclined to think that they're not available anywhere else. I'd hold on to them if I were you, and maybe even burn them onto a DVD.

AGREED. I'm not feeling this guy AT ALL. He does have that pretty-boy, The O.C. thing going for him, not someone who knows how to run a starship. And what the hell is up with that surfer's mock he's wearing? :s

That is NOT Captain James T. Kirk. 8-)

Urban seems to have channeled DeForest Kelly brilliantly! That's as close to Bones as you're going to get. {[]

Everyone else...well, we'll see. Maybe another trailer will get me in the mood for it.

    Oh no! Unconventional casting! :o

    It's over... :'(

    :v

EDIT: Perhaps 'unconventional' isn't the right word, and 'not William Shatner' is more to the point. Well, we might as well hold out for a Sean Connery return to the Bond franchise...

I don't think I've seen the guy's work...but perhaps he won't suck. I'm going to allow for the possibility.

I should feel ashamed to say this but even though I'm going to see this because I'm a curious 60s Trekkie, I kinda want it to bomb but at the same time I want it to be good...

Abrams is good at what he does but at the same time, he's such a tool on this. That is not Kirk! Why not recreate the Picard generation and leave the 60s one alone!! X-(

Sorry for that rant. I just hold Shatner & Co. in such high regard. :(

Fair enough; the guy's no Oscar Jade, but... ;)

With respect (and this is an old retort)...he is Kirk now. The only question is: Will he succeed?

I'm a huge Trek fan myself...and I'll concede the guy's no dead ringer for Shatner...but I've got the same kind of positive 'gut' feeling about this one that I had for another recent (and controversial) reboot, and I've learnt to trust my gut. The '60s Treks are all still with us, as are the previous 20 Bond flicks. Nothing that happens from here on in these franchises changes that---at least as far as I'm concerned.

    Predictable, I know...but there it is {[]
