Oh come on Dan, I think you're being a bit unfair and nitpicky now and I could easily apply your complaints towards just about any movie poster for a major picture released in recent memory.
Okay, okay, I give up. Don't shoot me. {:) :)) You're right about my complaints being levelled against posters for other major films; just shows IMO how often Hollywood gets the poster wrong. That said, I don't hate the poster. I just think it's far too busy.
    TonyDP wrote:
Pretty much all the IM posters until this point have shown the armor exclusively; this is really the first one where the other characters get some mention. Also, the armor is still prominently displayed here and is by far the biggest element on display. You also see a snippet of the Mk. I in action and planes chasing the Mk. III. You see the supporting characters. Compare this to movie posters for any of the other big releases in recent history and I think you'll see that it shows more of what's in the movie than most.
You're right, however I think we're coming at it from a different perspective. For you, IM may very well be the film to see this year. For me, however, it's behind the new *Batman, Indianna Jones, Eastwood, Fincher, De Niro/Pacino and Hellboy films (and that's not mentioning Bond which doesn't excite me as much as the others but which I'm very much looking forward to seeing.) I will definitely be seeing IM and I'm sure that I'll love it. But I haven't been following the film's PR campaign like you have and so this is the first time I have seen a poster. Based on that, I can't pretend to be enthusiastic about this poster.
    TonyDP wrote:
And don't forget, the poster is only one part of a movie's PR campaign. There's commercials, theatrical trailers, magazine ads, etc, etc, etc.
Absolutely, however I only ever pay attention to trailers and the odd poster. I don't know; I guess I just don't love the idea of depicting all the actors on the poster unless it is genuinely a collaberative effort.

This poster is my least favorite but I'm still pumped to see this. It is lame. Not everyone will be on board with every little thing that the studios spit out...

Regardless of questionable poster designs, Iron Man will be fine. I'm sure contributing to its cause...

Since the final US poster went over so well ... here's the final international poster in all of its Photoshopped glory.

It's something of an improvement of over the US release. The composition is more balanced and strong looking, which is more indicative of the subject. If it says 'Iron' in the title, than it can't look too soft.

The early promos all feature just the armor, but eventually they need a poster that's going to highlight all the talent (and also communicate that this is a live action film). I remember posters for the Rocketeer, which were very cool and art deco-ish, hid the movie behind the style and all people saw was 'Disney' and assumed it was a cartoon.

Tony, you will be pleased to know that I like this poster. I think it is very balanced and Iron Man (and Downey Jr.) take centre stage. I'm glad we in Australia get this poster. :D

Nail on the head. I want Shellhead IN YOUR FACE type designs.

I've always envied the international poster designs because they always seem to look alot cooler than ours here in the states as if they went the extra mile to come up with a better composition to lure the foreign market in and slight us as if we'd settle for anything they tacked together.

My cousin has an original Connery Bond Italian movie poster (framed) and although you may not understand a word on it, it just looks cooler. But maybe that's just me...

The latest IM is an improvement over the hack job of a few days ago. It's a tad edgier but I just don't think that Paltrow adds any sexiness in that Bond girl pose to balance it out. She doesn't have enough curves to compliment the dress she's wearing at all...

She just looks like the girl next door trying to hard to get noticed...Padding the chest with toilet paper, etc... :#

She's respectfully a talented actress but not hot enough to be Pepper.

    Iron Man to Open Early?
    Source: ComingSoon.net March 11, 2008

ComingSoon.net reports that Andrew Cripps, President of Paramount Pictures International, announced at ShoWest's International Day on Monday that Iron Man will be released Day-and-Date worldwide on April 30. What is unclear is whether that means North America will also get the movie two days earlier than the planned May 2 release. One thing to support that we will, is that Paramount is planning another Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull trailer for April, presumably with another Paramount movie, of which the biggest one would be Iron Man (if it indeed opens here on April 30.)

    I wouldn't complain if it did... B-)

Time to start saving up for those autograph and costume/armor cards. :))

Opening IM on a Wednesday sounds like a good idea. You get two extra days of box office to add to your weekend totals and two extra days in the theaters before the next big movie hits. I'm also pretty sure the film is all done or pretty close to done by now. Sounds good all around to me; hope it happens.

If it is true, my son is screwed; no way am I waiting for him to get out of classes. What better way to enjoy a film of this magnitude with all or most of the kids in school?

I'll take a day off and catch a matinee hopefully in peace. B-)

According to IGN, Samuel L. Jackson's Nick Fury cameo may not make it into the final film and instead only appear on the DVD.

Not sure of the reasoning beind this or if its even true. But given that William Hurt will be making a cameo in Iron Man, and Robert Downey Jr. will be making one in Hulk (all to lay the groundwork for a potential Avengers movie), maybe the producers are starting to think that Jackson is just one cameo to many.

Thanks for the link Rogue; those look great. There was also an interview with Robert Downey Jr. on one of those TV entertainment shows last night and they showed some clips; mostly stuff already seen in the trailers but a new scene or two here or there.

FWIW, I don't think the Mandarin is really viable as a villain in an Iron Man movie these days. Besides being a somewhat un-politically correct character, I never cared much for his "magical" powers. I know they were eventually explained as being derived from alien technology but I thought his modus operandi didn't mesh well with a high-tech hero like Iron Man.

Just about another month to go until this one premieres, then I'll be able to check it off my "childhood wishlish".

That's a good point, Tony. Perhaps we may get Baron Zemo in a sequel? Iron Man's villians can be so "period piece" with their different nationalities, that it would be sort of hard not to offend a certain group of people. Or is that Cap's bad guys?

Whiplash is just too lame to put in a big budget sequel I know for sure.

And, Darenhat...I have that book! Somewhere :)) . Yes that was an epic battle; I just wonder if the movie lifted any of the fight references from it.

I'm pretty sure Baron Zemo was Cap's nemesis; wasn't he the guy who invented a super glue for the Nazis during WWII, only to have Cap drop a vat of the stuff over his head, thus forever trapping him in a mask/veil he happened to be wearing at the time (this description is from when I read the comics back in the 70's BTW).

I'm pretty sure I had that IM book as well but I can never keep Obidiah Stane and Justin Hammer straight. I remember one of them donning the Monger suit and fighting IM and, when he was beaten, commiting suicide rather than giving up. Not sure if it was Stane or Hammer.

As to future IM villains, I'm not up to date on who he tangles with these days, but back in the 70's the Melter and Firebrand were two pretty formidable foes. They could also use the Crimson Dynamo, AIM (and MODOK), or Ultimo. Heck, since the Fantastic Four movies seem to be dead, they could even have him face off against Dr. Doom. Lots of ways that they could go with a sequel.

Well it's official that Iron Man will carry a PG-13 rating now for the obvious reasons and also three new tv spots have come online for the film as well.

I think that this flick will do very, very well next month...I hope.

Here's the link to the commercials:

Even some of my own art students tried to push my buttons yesterday telling me that IM is the future movie franchise and that no one will go and see TDK because he's lame and tired.
I told my young anarchists that they suck. :))

:)) I will say this about TDK: from everything I've seen it looks like Nolan is making a very dark and serious film (as opposed to IM which, based on the clips, seems to have a good balance of action and humor). And while the Batman purists may love that approach, I don't know if that's the path to box office success. Batman Returns went dark and serious and, after an strong opening weekend, it fizzled quickly. While I hope it doesn't happen, I could see the same thing with TDK if it does in fact follow a similar tone. The summer movies should be fun. I think Favreau knows that; based on what I've seen so far, I'm not sure Nolan does.

And don't get me started on the looks of the respective films relative to their 4 color counterparts. IM really embraces the books and looks like it jumped right off the comics pages (just look at that shot of IM in the Mk III blasting off and going thru the roof in the first clip). As for Batman and TDK...well...you know.

If I recall correctly, that was Stane. He put his repulsor ray to his temple and pulled the trigger.

I've got those issues somewhere. Perhaps I should dig them up and read through them before the film...just to get in the mood. :)

Tony, my son wanted me to relay a message to you from him:

He admitted to me that the Iron Man trailer didn't get him psyched to go see it as much as The Incredible Hulk did. He thought that the IM's plot was all mapped out in the commercials where Hulk's wasn't. I was a little shocked at that myself... :s

Now being that he's only ten and he only knows the current incarnation of Stark he reads from the comics (the jerk), this could be the reason for his feelings on it. He detests Stark. I tried to tell him that he won't see that version on film when we go.

As it is in my household, my son and I very rarely agree on films, particularly comic movies, but he also was very pumped up by TDK trailer more than IM's as was the other half of my art class...my DC faithful. ;)

He read what you said about the Hulk teaser sucking and took it personally I guess. :))

I would detest Stark too if his current version is all I had to go by. Please ask your son, as a personal favor to me, to give IM a chance. From what I've seen it really catches the vibe of the book from the 70's and early 80's (when I used to read it) and I think your boy will have a very different opinion of Stark after the movie.

Yeah, the promotional machine has been in overdrive and if you follow all the trailers and teasers like we do you can pretty much map out the film. But in all fairness, that's true of any highly publicized movie. I'm sure it'll be the same with the Hulk when its promotional machine goes into high gear.
As it is in my household, my son and I very rarely agree on films, particularly comic movies, but he also was very pumped up by TDK trailer more than IM's as was the other half of my art class...my DC faithful. ;)

I don't know if this an April Fool's joke or not, but I've read that a new TDK trailer will premiere later today (around 3:00pm) at clowntravelagency.com (another one of those viral sites I detest). Again, given the date it could be a red herring, but I hear WB has something in store.

And speaking of Iron Man, IGN has new interviews with Robert Downey Jr.

    and John Favreau

Interesting reads; they both are clearly comics fans and know their history, although Downey's stream of consciousness delivery makes my head spin whenver I try to read one of his responses.

    Don't feel bad, man-no harm done. :))
This is an arguement he wages even with his own peers who just look at the Iron Man movie on the surface; his friends don't even read the comics. That can be frustrating with him because they can't relate to the IM mythos nor any other mythos but he can debate with older comic fans better such as people I know. Just ask my LCS guy. :))

You have to know that today's kids don't read...much; they live in the videogame generation and in a way, that's pretty sad considering that many of them nationwide are poor spellers or annunciate improperly.

I encourage reading comics and my kid's been doing it since age 2 and he will debate with those on his level that understand what's involved with the medium. Your statement just got caught into the fray.

That and the fact that we both love The Hulk. :D

Marvel just made a bad move with making Stark so anal which has been swelling for the last 7-8 years or so. I had to pull out all of my old Romita, Jr. books to show him the IM that I grew up reading.

Just a note--I was in Target today, and I noticed a few of the Iron Man toys are out: a mask, some sort of rifle, and a 12" IM figure. Press his chest and his repulsor-rays (or whatever you call 'em) light up and he says in a new-Cyberman-like voice, "I am Iron Man!" No Black Sabbath song, though. . .

I saw these at Toys 'R Us yesterday. Kinda disappointing, actually. The 12" figure only has two sound effect and really no bells and whistles other than his chest piece lighting up. And the smaller figures are not to scale as the Monger is the same size as IM; they also got the color on the Mk I and Mk II wrong. I know these are for kids but still, the quality wasn't anything to write home about. I'll have to check out some of the more high-end collectables to see if they're worth picking up...

I never realy read the IM comics but I always thought it was a cool idea just for some reason never picked up any issues and by what you guys have been saying looks like thats not going to change any time soon

Marvel has not been kind to Tony Stark for the past...20 years or so. They made him a paraplegic after being shot by a jilted lover, they turned him into Kang's lackey, then they killed him off and replaced him with his teenaged self (who also conveniently had his heart ripped apart by the older Stark), and then they basically turned him into a fascist during Civil War. I shudder to think what may happen to him during Secret Invasion. Hopefully, if the film is successful, they'll make him a mroe positive character again.

You're really better off checking out reprints of the IM books from the 70's and early 80's or the occasional standalone story as the character fares much better in that stuff than in present continuity.

Yes, Agent_M...we do have British contacts who are Agents of The Bat. You do love The Flash so that goes a long way with me... B-)

I agree with Tony here; the best way to get into the IM world is through the comics of the 70s-80s where I thought were the best reads and he was a much more tolerable character as opposed to now. I wouldn't advise reading the current incarnation because Stark is just not likeable at all. Bob Layton & John Romita, Jr's artwork at the time, got me reading the book faithfully back then and perhaps you could pick up a trade or two from the era because they are well worth it. Try Ebay if all else fails. :)
