Here is a link below to pics of Downey training with an expert on the set if IM2 in hand to hand combat. I presume that it's for his confrontation with the Black Widow because it might look a little silly if he's doing karate in his armor...at least I hope that he doesn't.

Anyone know why Iron Man isn't on cable tv yet ?:) ? TDK premieres this weekend on HBO yet came out after IM.
Is it airing on Showtime? That's the only pay channel that I know that puts films on so late.
I remember reading somewhere that Showtime does indeed have the Pay TV rights to Iron Man. I don't subscribe to any of those pay channels but if they are indeed late in showing their exclusives, then that's probably your answer right there.

I figured as much. I love that channel but they have a huge penchant for putting movies, they've purchased the rights to, on dreadfully late.
Probably won't debut IM until September. They also have rights to The Mist, which hasn't aired on pay tv yet and that came out in theatres the fall of 2007.

USA Today has the first look at Mickey Rourke as Whiplash. The "costume" is quite minimalistic, but it does have recognizable elements from the comics character and it looks like the he's holding the electrified whips. How do we know these aren't Mickey's real clothes?
Thanks for the pic, Tony but I don't know...he just looks a little too exposed with this get-up on. Surely as the film progresses he'll have an outfit that's plausible & intimidating enough to take on a fully covered from head to toe IM wouldn't you think? I mean, going by this picture, all Stark would have to do is walk up and unplug him.
I'd hate to find out that this is "it". Kind of cheap looking with the cosmetic there.

It doesn't look all that impressive at first blush, although from what I recall, Whiplash's costume in the comics was practically an S&M outfit, right down to the leather mask; that would have probably looked really ridiculous. That's the problem with Iron Man's rogues gallery, they're an interesting bunch with some interesting abilities, but most of them look really lame.
Its just one pic and as I'm fond of saying, I need to see the finished product, in movement, before giving it a thumbs up or thumbs down. Besides, his costume may evolve as the film progresses or it may be augmented with CGI or it may be that Whiplash is a minor character. Best not to get too worked up over it, especially as we know so little about the story; I'll give them the benefit of the doubt...for now.

"Refined" and "Mickey Rourke" are words that will probably never mesh well together in the same sentence. I'd pretty much resigned myself to the fact that the movie's version of Whiplash would be on the grungy side once Rourke was finally cast, and that costume sort of fits his current persona. My gut tells me that's pretty much how he'll look for the duration, but that's just a guess on my part. It'll come down to how well he and his look fit into the overall story. I'll give him credit though, he does look pretty tough in that pic, weathered face and all.

I'm going to take a shot here and see if you agree with me; I think that Stark is caught with his proverbial pants down from assessing this picture.
Either Stark is doing the playboy billionaire thing by taking in a race or being involved in the race itself (you know these types) and Rourke was disguised in a pit crew jumpsuit to get the drop on him...hence Stark inventing a suit that can be portable at a moment's notice if this thing ever happens again.
I'm going to stay positive here and say this is their inaugural encounter...No way Favs is going to have his main villian looking so bohemian this entire film. I'd expect this type of aesthetic from Nolan but Favreau? No way. )

Seeing as the movie version of Tony Stark has announced to the world that he is Iron Man, it is possible that Whiplash has been hired by Justin Hammer to take him down when he's out of costume, and that may be what we're getting here: Stark being forced to survive by his wits until he can get to his suit or until somebody else saves him. Its way too early and we just don't have enough info to speculate but yeah, I could see a scenario like that.
As to Whiplash's look, like I said before, best to keep an open mind. You'll already have Iron Man and most likely War Machine parading around in full armors. You had the Iron Monger in the last film. You can't have everyone covered from head to toe in armor as that will get old and repetitive very quickly; that may be another reason for the minimalist approach to Whiplash.
Either way, we'll probably get a lot more info on this movie next month. Several sites including IGN have done extensive on-set visits but are under a gag order until the San Diego Comic Con in July. Who knows, they may even have a preliminary trailer by then.

Superherohype.com has a synopsis of the Iron Man 2 panel from Comic Con including a description of the first trailer from the movie. Sounds interesting, though I'm a little fearful that some of the story elements seem to be recycled from the first movie. Here's a link...

Thanks for the link Agent_M. I saw these online yesterday (they're also popping up on YouTube) and had been mulling them for a while.
Obviously, this is raw and unedited footage, but I've got to confess that these early glimpses are a little disappointing to me. The scenes of Fury and Stark talking and sipping coffee in the diner while in full costume and the senate hearings all seem a little too quirky and self-effacing; the actors mug for the camera a little too much for my taste. Whiplash throwing his electrified whips about seems a little hokey as well, just doesn't seem all that menacing to me (though the metal teeth are a nice touch). Rockwell's Justin Hammer seems like a bit of an oddball too with the lollipop and all that. War Machine looks good though.
The first movie really struck a good balance of seriousness and irreverence; I don't see that same balance here just yet, but obviously there's still a very very long way to go before this hits the screen. I've got my fingers crossed that they don't drop the ball.

The first movie really struck a good balance of seriousness and irreverence; I don't see that same balance here just yet, but obviously there's still a very very long way to go before this hits the screen. I've got my fingers crossed that they don't drop the ball.

I'm going to try my best to reserve judgement for now seeing that principle filming only wrapped up mere weeks ago and Favs & Co. were just trying to compile adequate footage in time not to disappoint Comic Con fans attending the events.
From what we've seen, there were certain scenes in this that made us cringe that have already been stated. I just pray that the comedy bar hasn't been raised in this sequel.
Although most of the footage was grainy, War Machine's appearance did bring on goosebumps for me. B-)
And the only thing that I liked of the little I've seen of Justin Hammer was his suit.

If its a stinker, I'll just go back to watching the stuff I already have and wait for something else to appear. Life's too short to obssess over a movie. Any movie. Well, except maybe Green Lantern.

He definitely didn't remind me of Hammer from the books based on that little scene. Not sure just how significant a part he plays in this. Likewise, there was no trace of Mandarin even though Favreau has said that he definitely factors into the overall story arc.

BTW, what did the Marvel Sisters think of the footage?
The footage looked okay to me (mind you, I just said "okay")...My experience has been that you can't judge a film until it has received it's final edit and scoring, and the scenes are viewed in context. I wouldn't be surprised if the "Senate Investigation" panel scenes are going to be cut dramatically and edited to fit a kind of news story running in the background (who wants to pay 10 bucks to see that when they can watch the same thing on C-SPAN for free).

Tony, maybe you can answer this, or if someone else knows the answer. I'm seeing a trend with Iron Man and the characters. Iron Man, Iron Monger and now Whiplash all have the center lighted piece. We know why Iron Man has it, but why all the other characters?

Well, this is just a guess on my part but when I used to read the Iron Man comic there were a lot of stories where someone stole some piece of Stark technology and Iron Man would always have to somehow get it back. I see the same thing to some extent in the movies: in the first one Obidiah Stane steals Stark's ARC Reactor chestpiece right out of him to power his own suit. And if the preview footage to Iron Man 2 is anything to go by, it looks like the Whiplash character has some kind of connection to Stark or someone else in his organization, thus his access to yet another ARC Reactor or some derivative.
They have to be careful because if everybody starts running around with a glowing chestpiece it could backfire and be dismissed as repetitive; but like I said before, that was always in the comics as well.
Again, that's just a guest on my part and I'm sure RogueAgent, who has kept up with the comic far more than I have, could give a better explanation.

That looks like something I might see on Iron Man: Armored Adventures. Not bad I suppose but the arc reactor placement might get a little stale after awhile.

Towards the end of 2008's "Iron Man," James "Rhodey" Rhodes (played by Terrence Howard) looked at the early silver version of Tony Stark's high-tech armor and said to himself, "Next time, baby."
That "next time" is coming on May 7, when "Iron Man 2" hits theaters. And Rhodey will get his wish, donning the heavily-armored metallic suit that turns him into War Machine, a character that has been a part of the "Iron Man" comic books for 30 years. But getting superpowers isn't the only change for the character.
In a much-publicized contract dispute, Terrence Howard was dropped from the sequel and replaced by actor Don Cheadle. While the exact details of why Marvel Studios made the switch, Entertainment Weekly reported that Howard's original contract made him the highest-paid actor in the first film, and when the producers tried to scale back his paycheck for the sequel, Howard's representatives balked. Cheadle told IGN that he was approached for the role after Howard had already left the project, and he only had a few hours to decide if he wanted to step in.
A brief reference to the casting switch was revealed in footage director Jon Favreau screened for fans at this summer's San Diego Comic Con. In an early scene in the movie, Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) is being questioned by a Senate panel about Iron Man and James Rhodes is called to testify. When Rhodes' face is revealed to be Don Cheadle, he says, "It's me. I'm here. Get over it."
Of course, the moment in the Comic Con presentation that got the biggest reaction from the crowd was the reveal of Rhodey in his full War Machine armor. In the film, Rhodes takes the silver Iron Man suit to Stark's rival, Justin Hammer (played by Sam Rockwell), who outfits it with an array of weapons, including a machine gun turret on the shoulder. The preview ended with a quick shot of War Machine in full attack mode, and the 6,500 fans in attendance burst out in cheers at the sight.
So far, no official footage of War Machine has been released, but the first image of the suit debuted Monday here on Yahoo! Movies. In this teaser poster, the War Machine suit stands behind the updated Mark IV Iron Man armor.
It raises the question: are Stark and Rhodes standing together, back-to-back, in solidarity against a common enemy, or are they in opposition to each other. In the comic books, conflict between the two escalated into a feud, but later they were able to work together as friends. To find out if the two are comrades or combatants, we'll have to wait for "Iron Man 2" to arrive in theaters on May 7.

Be sure to freeze-frame thru the final section to get a good look at the Mk IV Armor, the War Machine Armor...and some other stuff.

They have to be careful because if everybody starts running around with a glowing chestpiece it could backfire and be dismissed as repetitive; but like I said before, that was always in the comics as well.
Again, that's just a guest on my part and I'm sure RogueAgent, who has kept up with the comic far more than I have, could give a better explanation.
That looks like something I might see on Iron Man: Armored Adventures. Not bad I suppose but the arc reactor placement might get a little stale after awhile.

War Machine Revealed in 'Iron Man 2' Poster

Towards the end of 2008's "Iron Man," James "Rhodey" Rhodes (played by Terrence Howard) looked at the early silver version of Tony Stark's high-tech armor and said to himself, "Next time, baby."
That "next time" is coming on May 7, when "Iron Man 2" hits theaters. And Rhodey will get his wish, donning the heavily-armored metallic suit that turns him into War Machine, a character that has been a part of the "Iron Man" comic books for 30 years. But getting superpowers isn't the only change for the character.
In a much-publicized contract dispute, Terrence Howard was dropped from the sequel and replaced by actor Don Cheadle. While the exact details of why Marvel Studios made the switch, Entertainment Weekly reported that Howard's original contract made him the highest-paid actor in the first film, and when the producers tried to scale back his paycheck for the sequel, Howard's representatives balked. Cheadle told IGN that he was approached for the role after Howard had already left the project, and he only had a few hours to decide if he wanted to step in.
A brief reference to the casting switch was revealed in footage director Jon Favreau screened for fans at this summer's San Diego Comic Con. In an early scene in the movie, Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) is being questioned by a Senate panel about Iron Man and James Rhodes is called to testify. When Rhodes' face is revealed to be Don Cheadle, he says, "It's me. I'm here. Get over it."
Of course, the moment in the Comic Con presentation that got the biggest reaction from the crowd was the reveal of Rhodey in his full War Machine armor. In the film, Rhodes takes the silver Iron Man suit to Stark's rival, Justin Hammer (played by Sam Rockwell), who outfits it with an array of weapons, including a machine gun turret on the shoulder. The preview ended with a quick shot of War Machine in full attack mode, and the 6,500 fans in attendance burst out in cheers at the sight.
So far, no official footage of War Machine has been released, but the first image of the suit debuted Monday here on Yahoo! Movies. In this teaser poster, the War Machine suit stands behind the updated Mark IV Iron Man armor.
It raises the question: are Stark and Rhodes standing together, back-to-back, in solidarity against a common enemy, or are they in opposition to each other. In the comic books, conflict between the two escalated into a feud, but later they were able to work together as friends. To find out if the two are comrades or combatants, we'll have to wait for "Iron Man 2" to arrive in theaters on May 7.
