i am not keen on its guitar intro...a bit like a schumacher batman tune...and the please line is a bit off key but i am surprised to say i like the song...i have low expectations with arnold but at least its not one of those naff pastiche bond themes...its the first thing about casino royale i like
If this song is adapted into the soundtrack really well by David Arnold, and the melody is proves really effective, would your opinion of the song improve? I'm asking generally to those who dislike it, because I find that almost inevitably, when the theme song is weaved nicely into the score, my respect for it is greatly improved.
It wouldn't improve the song in my opinion. Incorporating the song into the score would speak of some craft on Arnold's part, but that doesn't mean much to me. If there is an intrinsic value to the song, then it would be up to both artist to convey that value. It could be a good song, but if Cornell makes it sound like crap, and Arnold doesn't, that doesn't elevate Cornell by association. In fact, it lessens the title song IMO. I would much rather hear lush, powerful renditions of a strong melody meshing beautifully with visuals than a mangled version of the same theme.

Shumacher's Batman is apocalyptic. about YNMN intro, please hear it carefull (i have) and now i got this conclution:
First i tought that it wasn't verry Bondish, now i say the opposite, it is - well not original or clever- but rather a bond intro. the real problem is that Cornell - Arnold chose the electric guittar instead a orchestral instrument (like in TWINE), say the trumpets, the cords or even a piano.
Its all about Rhytm as someone said before.
and yes, As arnold helped composing the song, is obvious than he will use it in the soundtrack, unlike DAD (it only sound in the ice party)
Please remember AVTAK and TLD... greats songs, verry 80's, yet in the films there are some orchestral moments than make them morre classic, even better.
i really hope we heard a more orchestral version in the film, even if it isn't in the main titles
Well Daphne & Celeste are doing the playout song, apparently:
I saw you walking down the street just the other day
I didn't see your damage from that far away
I should have got a clue when the kids started screaming
You walked up to me with your buck teeth a-gleaming
You hair was all frizzy and your face out of luck
I thought it was a sack but it's your favourite tux
You hurt the trees feelings and the birds all flew
I don't mean to insult you - Oh yes I do!
Your teeth are yellow they're covered in mould
You're only 38 you look a hundred years old
When looks were handed out you were last in line
You face looks like where the sun don't shine
Did you fall off a building and land on your head
Or did a truck run over your face instead
There ain't no pill cos you ain't ill
You ugly!
U.G.L.Y
You ain't got no alibi
You ugly
Hey! Hey! You ugly X2
What you really need is to wear a mask
And book that plastic surgeon fast, boy
You're scary you're hairy I heard about you
You're the main attraction at the city zoo
You're so ugly with a belly full of flab
When you wear a yellow coat people shout out cab! (So funny)
You got eyes like a pig and your nose is big
And with hair like that you should be wearing a wig
Uncle Fester remember him
I never knew that you had a twin
You can't disguise your googly eyes
In the Miss Ugly pageant you win first prize
Your mama says you ugly, you ugly
U.G.L.Y
You ain't got no alibi
You ugly
Hey! Hey! You ugly X2
Get busy X15
Your mama says you ugly X3
You ugly
U-U-U-U now I feel like blondie
U.G.L.Y
You ain't got no alibi
You ugly
Hey! Hey! You ugly X2
Hope that gives FROSTY a laugh, no offense Danny if you're reading this...
I've only listened to it twice, and it doesn't thrill me very much. Funny, I actually thought the guitar intro was Bondianly dramatic enough, but it went downhill from there, IMHO. I agree with those who say it has that bland, over-produced "'80's rock" sound. Maybe if I listened to it ten more times, it would get stuck in my head, and I might consider it "catchy".
As for the more recent Bond themes, I agree most of them since LALD suck, but I really liked Cheryl Crow's "Tomorrow Never Dies". The lyrics seem to be coming from Paris Carver after Bond ran off on her, especially the line "martinis, girls and guns are murder on our love affair."
The song has emotion, angst, and drama. The rhythm sort or reminds me of the old "Perry Mason" theme.
My favorite theme songs: OHMSS, Goldfinger, FRWL (instrumental version from the opening credits),
LALD, YOLT, DAF.
Anyway, I'm not letting the theme song kill my anticipation of seeing CR!
Well, despite the fact that my parents (aged 65+) seem to like it, thus making it an Official Disaster™ - - I was coming back from the gym earlier with a mate when I stuck it on in his car. And I have to admit, on the sound system of an '06 XK8 anyway, the string section over "If you come inside..." till the chorus was very impressive indeed.
But then, the normally rubbish Numb/Encore by Linkin Park & Jay-Z (not my thing, generally) also managed to sound impressive in there, even if we did seem like a couple of pimps driving through Largs town centre in the pouring rain
Can't decide if it has grown on me, or if I have resigned myself to it being the new Bond theme and therefore I have to at least give it a pass mark. Either way I don't find it quite as hateful as I used to.
Having said that, I have added it to my "Best of Bond" iPod playlist; and today it came on right after LALD. It may have been their intention to ape Sir Paul's magnificence, but when they are that close together, you just see that YKMN is not in the same class by a long shot.
It's a pretty cool tune, deffinatly needs to be played loud, but it does sound like just another Audioslave track, if it wasnt a bond song i doubt it would get as noticed as it is now. but I cant complaine, at least its not some techno crap or madonna bull****!
I am listening to the song right now and I admit that I find it cool but I do not find any element to which I am familiar in any Bond theme. The atmosphere is sad, which goes well with the conclusion of the book but, well, I like it : now I see this bond will really be different from the other ones. I can't wait to listen to Arnold's score!
Now that I've heard the song a couple of times it is definately growing on me. I think the key to the success of the song will be how it translates into an instrumental arrangement which apparently will be used as a musical background throughout the film, especially since we will reportedly only be hearing the Bond Theme
at the end of the film (hopefully during a climatic action sequence as Bond kicks serious butt). Arnold mentioned the music in OHMSS as an inspiration for the music for CR but I also get the feeling that the CR theme may also be used much like George Martin's instrumental arrangements of Live and Let Die were used IMO
very effectively in that film. I believe there is some real potential here for a good Bond score. Arnold IMO has alot more to work with than
that Madonna abomination in DAD (no offense intended to Madonna fans...the song just didn't work for me on any level).
I just listened to the song and all I can say is it's damn good. I'm a big Audioslave/Soundgarden fan so they could not have chosen a better artist for my tastes. This movie is going to rock..I can smell it...
"Arm yourself because no one else here will save YOU"
I heard a snippet of the song that plays to a section of the new trailer. I'm not sure where I found it, I just typed in "You Know My Name" and "Chris Cornell" in the Google.com search, and there I found it. That's the only segment of the song that I've heard so far, and it did not disappoint me at all. I'm very very happy with how this ordeal is turning out.
try in youtube (sorry i i dont put the link,i've lost it) but type casino royale and arrange it by date, the you'll see like three or four videos (more like powerpint presentations).
this is a youtube video where somebody put "You Know my Name" in Licence to Kill Titles secuence... this try to give the impression of the son in the movie, of course is not proper synchronized... but it is really good.
cheers for those, lads!! I like this song a lot!! but all i hope is that it will be just an instrumental during the (forgot what it's called now - but you know what i mean:))

"Title Sequence"
I'm optimistic about the new sound of Bond. I've been getting increasingly anxious each day approaching the release of Bond 21. The idea that it will be a whole new face on something familiar is extremely attractive. The fact that I have no idea what to expect about anything with it is a huge bonus. I like not knowing what will happen. When something as formulaic as Bond gets an all-new refurbishment, it's really a thing to shout about. I'm sure there's some that will hate it, but I'm going in with an open mind and a rapid pulse. I have accepted James Bond as my guiding spirit. I've found my level ground because of it, and I will support it 100%.
I really really like it, it sounds 80s and I have to say I have always like Cornell's music since he was in soundgarden and now in audioslave...It remind me of Duran Duran's A view to a kill and A-Ha's TLDL...still a little too "garage" for Bond...but it's gonna be interesting to actually see it and hear it on cinema, bravo Arnold and Cornell...
Having listened to it many times , my opinion doesn´t vary much. Very catchy chorus. Would mix strings and brass up, mix wall of guitars down a lot. That´s the reason why A View to a Kill and The Living Daylights work so well, because of the perfect blend of the Bond elements (John Barry´s arrangements) with the groups´ sounds. But then again, David Arnold is not John Barry.
Well... I'm a big Soundgarden/Bond fan, what means that I was be happy about the choice of an artist who will perform a title song for new bond movie, but... when I first listened to the song I was dissapointed. I was reading this discussion and listening to this song (about 15 times) and was hoping that it'll grow on me but actually it didn't.
I have to say (for the people who are not very much into Cornells music) that Mr. Cornell is a very talented vocalist. He has written some fantastic lyrics and melodies during his carreer. Some people here were saying that the song had to be darker, well... Cornell was the good choice, he definitely could've wrote a much, much darker song (but he didn't), and the lyrics could've aslo been better (althow they are not bad). The thing is that as Cornell grew older he bacame more melodramatic, and i think that this was one of the reasons why soundgarden splitted in '98, looks like they wanted to stay as dark and as heavy as in their earlier days and Mr. Cornell didn't. He proved that by releasing his first solo album a few years later, which didn't have a single heavy rock song on it, and (because of that) failed on the market. Then he joined the Audioslave, (which was rage against the machine without the lead singer) and first album was really heavy, second was lighter, and the 3 and current one is for 60% Cornells second solo album (full of ballads). The point is, that Cornell today is a person who likes to write ballads. Off course a ballad as a title song for a bond Movie is good, but EON wanted to have a rockier, more aggressive song and that is why this ballad is more uptempo than it should be. It looks like they also didn't want to risk and make this song more heavier. If the tempo and arrangement of it will be changed for the main title it will be perfect, because that's the way it should be.
The other thing is, that instruments just don't sound right. Drums sound like some drum-machine, guitar has nothing special... therefore I rally hope that this is some kind of a demo version. On the second hand I thought almost the same thing about Madonnas DAD when I first heard it, I thought it was some Madonna remix, and the song in the opening titles would be arranged differently. As all you know it wasn't. If the same happens with this one, from my point of view, it'll be a shame.
Also I've noticed some people mentioning U2 writing a song for a bond film, saying that it will be more rock than cornell. But as you know Godeneye was only performed by Tina Turner, but was written by U2 (Bono and The Edge) and it didn't sound rock to me, altough it's a brilliant song.
For the moment that's all I think about this issue (in few words ).
You make some really good points. Though I personally enjoyed all the Bond themes, including this one, I can definitely see where your argument merits. For a rock song, it definitely doesn't rock very much. I would agree that more metal would have been better. But the good thing is that since Bond 22 is due in 2008, they have two years to not listen to the fans and do whatever they want again.
Apparently there's a new version of the song with slightly different lyrics and more orchestration on Cornell's MySpace site here: http://www.myspace.com/chriscornell
