Octopussy Egg Prop Replica

PoorMansJBPoorMansJB USAPosts: 1,203MI6 Agent
I've been trying to find a Faberge egg like the one in OP for some time without luck; lots of faux Faberge eggs on the market but never the right combination of pattern, color, size, etc. As that egg was invented just for the film and not based on an existing design, there are no stock replicas.

Recently, though, I found an egg that comes very close ((http://www.jewelryboxdirect.com/productdetails.asp?cat_id=72&group_id=7&ProductID=898&ProcessType=1) and I contacted the dealer about the possibility of having it made in green. They are quite interested but would like a sense of whether 100--the minimum they have to produce--is too many or too few.

The egg would be 4" tall (I'm guessing the prop was about 5") and retail for US$ 85. It would not have the coach inside but coach replicas are the one thing you can easily find. If the numbers justify production, the eggs would be available in 2-3 months.

If any of you are interested, please let the dealer know at: http://www.jewelryboxdirect.com/help/contactus.asp ; they suggest putting "James Bond Egg" or "Octopussy Egg" in the subject line. I'm hoping 20-30 folks chime-in from here and various other forums even if they don't plan to purchase one just now; this isn't a commitment to buy, just helping them gauge interest. At worst, you'll get a reminder when the eggs come on the market. At best we'll have a decent OP prop egg at a reasonable price.

If you mean the "contact" link, I just tweaked it so as not to pick-up the ";" at the end ... I was afraid that might throw some folks off.

I just sent them a hello, but the subject lines are preselected, so I had to write your suggested Octopussy egg in the actual comment/question box.

Just got this: (that was REALLY quick!)

    Hi-
Yes, we are having a replica of the Bond "Octopussy" egg made. They will be available after the holidays. You will be contacted as soon as they come into stock and are guaranteed an egg. If you wish more than 1, please indicate so. Only 100 are being made.

    Thank You-
    Marie

It'll be a lovely decoration piece. You said it is easy to get the little coach? May I ask where?

    PoorMansJB,

I sent my request for an Octopussy egg. I can't wait for the response. It's going to be a very James Bond Christmas and New Year. I love it! Let me know where you can find the coach as well.

I hadn't actually tried it, was just going from my conversation with Marie. But good to know it works. Funny, it's one of those things where I wouldn't have expected to find a seller who'd take any interest but they seem quite excited to offer this niche product.

Here's one http://cgi.ebay.com/fsa31-Russian-24K-Gold-Swarovski-Faberge-Carriage_W0QQitemZ140039451945QQihZ004QQcategoryZ13794QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem which will likely be sold by the time you see this but the dealer has more plus there are other dealers. Note, this is not an endorsement; just responding on the availability of Faberge coaches.

These would fit inside the egg in question but not as it did in the film; that will take some more searching.

Nice find Alan, they really will be creating a niche market for themselves. If it's limited to only 100 pieces, I'd better get my order in!!!

I got a similar response to Nightshooter from Marie. I'm on the list!

Hope they get the details correct...not just diamonds but blue saphires should be in place.

It's a little pricey, but look at the one being offered from www.jamesbondtoys.net under props and replicas. It's as close to the original as you can get. Even the imperial coach is displayed like you see it in the film and not just thrown in like I've seen in many Faberge replicas. See for yourself!!

No, just "diamonds" (or, rather, white Swarovski crystals). Again, this is an existing egg specially run in green--not an exact replica--and the pattern allows for a single stone, not a cluster. As I noted, this egg is an affordable approximation.

A similar situation: These were available through eBay (at £190) and Nick now has them exclusively. It is also 4" tall (like the one I found, slightly undersize I think) and has just the single stones. The coach is a significant inclusion but not some seven times more significant to me.

I've estimated an accurate reproduction at US$ 3,500-5,000 which made my little cobbled-together US$ 100 facsimile finally seem much more attractive (to my eye, anyway).

Alan, just wondering: Have you emailed the company pics from the actual Octopussy egg so maybe they can get as much detail as possible? Or are they just going to color the existing egg green and that's it?

This is an existing egg which is normally available in a variety of colors except green. I did not send them any photos as they are simply a distributor, not a manufacturer. Again, this is just a reaonably priced egg that happens to come very close to the one seen on screen; that exact egg never existed and, on closer analysis, is actually quite unlike anything Faberge ever made. I have approached other dealers about making a precise replica but the prices quoted--while probably appropriate to the workmanship, etc.--were way beyond what I wanted to pay.

I think with a moderate amount of creativity this egg will get to about 90% accuracy. Adding a few things etc will make it look like the closed egg which, for the price, is quite the deal!

Will go well with the Saw yoyo I just received! :)

We owe Alan a big thanks for this one!

Dear sir, I bought one of the Faberge green eggs (no ham...), with the coach, from Octopussy. It comes boxed, like on the site mentioned in a previous post. They want 375GBP, and if you contact me, I will sell mine to you for less than that. Thanks, Tom vivlempereur@hotmail.com

No offense but I would have to go with spending $85 rather than $840 on an egg.

    Hi,

thanks for looking at our exclusive Egg on www.jamesbondtoys.net . this was an existing egg that we have had reworked to our specifications. It is 22kt plated with inset sapphire swarovski crystals. It may seem a little pricey but they are not cheap items and ours includes an ash bash with brass plaque and also a copy of the Sothebys catalogue from the film. The egg is seperate from the base and opens to reveal a gold plated coach which is a again inset with crystals. As a collector myself I searched for years for a good egg to display and have put up with a red music box one for ages. Alans egg is a good idea and certainly a bargain egg for the money. I think ours is a serious leap in both cost and quality but one which has to be the ultimate Egg replica.

I am a goldsmith in the UK and I was one of the team who made the original eggs used in the film Octopussy. We made four identical eggs but only one with the coach inside, they neede four as scenes were being filmed at different locations around the world at the same time. The eggs were commissioned from Asprey by Ron Quelch who was the production buyer of Eon Productions. In one of the scenes in the film two of my actual gold eggs were used as props,I am not sure but it was a scene in the kremlin vaults.I have photos of the eggs if anyone is interested.
