Hey guys, looks like there's going to be a Director's Cut of the Dolph Lundgren Punisher movie with heretofore unseen footage. Here's a few stills, complete with restored dialog straight from the script. Have a look...

Hey, I know it takes temporary incoherence to really enjoy this movie but please tell me at the time, what was Marvel putting out better that was worth raving about? Pretty much nothing.

As critical as I can be about this movie genre, this is the one film that slips through the cracks for me. Guilty pleasure. Although I wouldn't have minded to have the skull on Lundgren's tees; it would have helped the dynamic alot.

Well, it's definitely the best of the Marvel adaptations from the era (I know, that isn't saying very much). If the budget for the Punisher was eleven dollars, then I'd say Fantastic Four cost at least twice as much to make.

It does have some good moments and everybody is very earnest in playing their parts. On the other hand. there's also plenty of cringeworthy material, especially the subplot with the Moleman.

I'll see if I can rip you a DVD of the bootleg I have this weekend although be warned that the picture quality won't be anything to write home about since the original master was an old VHS tape.

Hasslehof's Nick Fury is quite possibly the worst film ever made. I actually tuned that one out after about 20 minutes.

Yes Rogue, it's even worse than The Dolphisher

About the only thing that stretches are Reed's Arms. As for Torch, the flameon at the end is the only one - the scene is actually composed very similarly to the one in the more recent FF movie where he diverts Doom's rocket; although it looks like a cartoon more than a real person.

The guy playing Doom really hams it up; he gets the voice right (actually better than Julian McMahon) but he has this weird habit of running his gloved hands over everybody's face.

    :)) :)) :))

Here's the outline of the film:

Our intrepid trio are working crappy jobs to make ends meet. Stallone, the Italo-American stereotype is making - what else - pizzas. Arnold has taken a job as a baker in a French bakery making his famous Austrian Apple Strudel which does not go over well in a French pastry shop; Dolph, right off the boat from Sweden has just been hired as a dopey security guard since he can barely utter any English at all but has the physique and iron jaw of an Eastern Island statue.

They decide they must improve themselves and make their mark in the world by taking English and Speech classes. They all meet at Speech 101 class taught by ESL and speech professor Steve Martin.

Martin puts them through the paces and the fireworks fly from there. They're put through enunciation exercises. Stallone has trouble with "the rain in Spain stays mainly in the plain". Totally frustrated, wer're treated to his trademark yell. Arnold, who is doing much better, is given a technological speech to hammer through but has trouble with words beginning with the letter "J" coming off as "CHAY" Dolph, poor fellow, is the slowest of the bunch. He sits quietly daydreaming the same daydream of becoming a "B" movie actor.

Eventually, thinking that they have learned enough to make a difference, they are set loose on society at large.

We see Arnold on his first date with an American girl named Jill (Chill). He unfortunately takes her to a French restaurant and totally demolishes it after having trouble with the French menu.

Stallone decides to take a job as a police dispatcher. Unfortunately, his unintelligeable and slurred speech creates havoc on police radios everywhere.

Dolph is hired as an extra in a low budget sci-fi flick filmed in a rundown factory basement. It is a non speaking part. His director bolsters his spirit by telling him that he has all the attributes for a long and distinguished "B" movie career. Son, he tells him, being able to speak properly is not important in hollywood pictures. Just look dumb and act stupid and you will go a long way.....

Actor Paddy Considine (The Bourne Ultimatum, Hot Fuzz) has revealed on here that he has been offered a role in Lionsgate's Punisher: War Zone. He doesn't say which role it is.

The film will be directed by Lexi Alexander and star Ray Stevenson in the title role.

Oh, YouTube. . . I just discovered there's quite a bit of the '94 Fantastic Four there, including this seven-and-a-half-minute sequence. What's to hate most? Johnny channeling Archie Andrews? Reed using his incredible powers to trip an advancing guard? Dr. Doom's Shatneresque delivery? ("Keep your. . ." long, long pause ". . .cool!") The fact everything seems to have been shot in an abandoned airplane hangar with one working light? Nope, it's gotta be the Styrofoam Thing, with his gigantic head, eyes you can sorta see behind the peep holes, and lips and mouth that don't match the inarticulate words: "It's clommerin' time!" Where's Mystery Science Theater 3000 when you need it?

Oh, and Dolph Lundgren as The Punisher. What th'--? If I didn't know it was Dolph, I'd swear Morrissey was moonlighting from the Smiths!

    New Punisher Cast Members Announced
Source: Lexi Alexander September 18, 2007

Punisher: War Zone director Lexi Alexander (Green Street Hooligans) has announced three new actors on her official website.

"There are not a lot of directors in the process of making a studio action film who can say that they don't have at least one bad actor somebody made them cast. I can say that. Still. (Knocking on every piece of wood as I speak)," Alexander says, "I have the best cast on the planet. The movie Gods were watching over me."

Joining Ray Stevenson are Dash Mihok as Detective Detective Martin Soap, Colin Salmon as Agent Paul Budiansky and Doug Hutchinson as Loony Bin Jim.

She adds, "As I look at their headshots on the wall in my office, my heart does little summersaults. And... I have the perfect, most talented Jigsaw!!!!!!! Stay tuned. (Don't you hate that)."

It's Official: Justice League Moving Ahead at WB
    Source: Variety September 20, 2007

Warner Bros. is moving aggressively ahead with the big screen adaptation of DC Comics' Justice League of America, with George Miller (Happy Feet) on board to direct, reports Variety.

The project, which is in the initial phases of casting, is a pre-strike priority for the studio, which needs a superhero tentpole in 2009.

Still, making all the pieces fit has been complicated by overlapping superhero projects in the pipeline, since "Justice League" features a pantheon of superheroes, including Superman and Batman.

Batman and Superman are active properties for the studio, though the next installment in the Superman franchise has taken a backseat to "Justice League" in part because Warners is so keen on the "Justice League" script by Kieran and Michele Mulroney.

"Justice League" will likely feature the characters of Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, the Flash and Aquaman.

The project is so complicated -- and casting dependent -- that even those deeply involved in the project are holding their breath until production begins.

"They're working very hard to get it to happen," said one party close to the project. "But there are so many characters it's complicated."

I really love Wonder Woman and my GF loves Flash, so if this happens, we will definitely be there on opening weekend. :D BTW, if Superman and Batman are involved, what will happen to their respective franchises? I ask, because while I loved Batman Begins, I didn't much like Superman Returns, so I would like to see more Batman films but no more Superman films (at least until they get a better cast and director.)

I picked up the Superman/Doomsday direct to video DVD today. Minor spoilers below so read at your own discretion...

The DVD is based on the Death of Superman, Funeral for a Friend and Reign of the Supermen storylines from the early 1990's but greatly simplified for home video; the running time is only 75 minutes.

The first third of the story is Superman vs. Doomsday and culminates in the tragic ending from the book. Like the comic, very little information is given in the way of who or what Doomsday is and where he comes from. There next comes a brief interlude as the characters cope with the notion of a world without Superman. The final act involves Superman's return just in time to face a clone of himself created by Lex Luthor that has run amok.

Neither Batman, the JLA or the pretender Supermen, all of whom played major roles in the comics make appearances. In fact, the "universe" the story takes place in appears to be different from the existing Superman and JLA animated shows as there is no mention whatsoever of Batman or any of the other heroes. Superman goes at it almost completely alone in this one. The only help he gets is from a robot servant that guards the Fortress of Solitude for him (clearly an attempt at working aspects of the Eradicator into the story).

The animation style is similar to previous DC animated entries, although some of the characters have a thinner, waifish appearance and the extra details on Superman's face make him look older than everyone else. The various fights are all well staged and really give the subwoofer a workout. The voice acting is similarly competent but it also sounds somewhat odd to hear such different voices coming from the cast, especially Luthor, who was previously memorably voiced by Clancy Brown.

The video also earns its PG-13 rating. There are some post-coital moments with Superman and Lois; Doomsday commits some pretty violent and gruesome murders, and even Lex Luthor and the Superman clone commit cold blooded murder.

Overall, it was a pretty good production, though not particularly memorable in any way. It has a better story than Superman Returns and also does a better job at getting the relationships of the characters; Lois Lane and Superman even have a romantic relationship that is explored to some degree. I would have preferred a longer version that retained more elements from the storylines that inspired it, especially as the battle with the clone at the end was something of an anticlimax.

As to extras, there is an audio commentary, a pretty compresensive documentary on the genesis and after-effects of the Death of Superman storyline from the early 1990's; all of the writers and editorial staff that worked on the book are interviewed. There are also featurettes on the voice talent and a preview of the DC: New Frontier DVD that is coming out next spring.

There's a lot of material on this DVD and at only $10, I definitely got my money's worth.

Well, I'm pretty sure the one film wasn't received to well by audiences as a whole. The man who wrote and produced the film (Jeffrey Boam) has since passed away. That doesn't mean it can't happen, but it will take a studio with temerity to back a new picture.
