    Keri Russell is Wonder Woman!
Source: TV Guide January 14, 2008

TV Guide is reporting that Keri Russell has been cast as Wonder Woman... no, not in Justice League or a stand-alone WW movie, but as the voice in Warner Home Video's straight-to-DVD animated Wonder Woman movie coming to stores in late '08/early '09.

The direct-to-DVD titles kicked-off with Superman: Doomsday last September and will continue with Justice League: New Frontier (Feb. 26) and Batman: Gotham Knight.

Not as thrown as I was. I thought it said Ken Russell. :)) Note to self: Must get eyes tested.

I guess that Superman/Doomsday DVD must have sold pretty well as there had been no previous mention (that I was aware of) of either Wonder Woman or Batman direct to DVD projects.

I'm all for these direct to DVD efforts as the stories are often better than what we get in the live action movies. I only wish that DC/WB would allot the filmmakers a longer running time. Most of these shows clock in at around 75 minutes (probably so they can be broadcast on Cartoon Network or similar outlets with sufficient commercial interruptions) but the story does suffer as a result. The Superman/Doomsday story was simplified way too much to accomodate the running time and I'm fearful next month's Justice League: New Frontier will be similarly truncated since it also clocks in at 75 minutes.

BTW, there's also a story over at IGN touching on both the live action JLA movie and the sequel to Superman Returns. In short, both appear to be in turbulent waters due to the writers strike and other factors. It also mentions that all the members of the JLA have been cast. Did I miss something? Anyhow, here's the link:

BTW #2, getting back to that whole Spiderman / Mary Jane / Mephisto / Aunt May comic book business, I came across this on the web and thought I'd share. Very funny (I think):

I read somewhere that its sales had come along nicely. A loosely based version of that story arc indeed but it was pretty solid regardless. I mean it was kind of dark for Superman without the Singer soap opera...and no kid. :v

I hate that some of the WB/DC live action films come off more as kiddy-fairs than the actual cartoons sometimes. Return Of The Joker is still very high on my list; imagine if half of the material from that picture was used the other way around? B-)

BTW, I'm as much in the dark about the new JLA cast as you are. Very behind closed doors on that.

FYI, there's a very positive review of the New Frontier DVD courtesy of the film nerds over at AICN. As I suspected, the story has been truncated and simplified greatly but, according to this reviewer it all still works. Here's a link to the complete article:

Looks like the live action Justice League movie is on hold indefinitely. Apparently WB decided not to exercise its option on the actors cast because of ongoing script problems that could not be addressed due to the writers strike. Here's a link to the full article at Variety...

Not true. It has been placed on indefinite hold but, according to the article, 'the studio is determined to make the film with them (the cast) in it.' It may not be made, but it has not been ruled out yet. My guess is that it will be released in 2010 or 2011 with most or all of the current cast members.

I could be wrong Dan, but by not exercising their options, WB will now have to renegotiate with each actor at some future date before they can sign them on again. Also, there is no guarantee George Miller will want to wait to do the movie a few months (or years) down the road; and if another producer/director is brought in he'll probably have his own vision about the makeup of the cast.

Clearly, WB wants to try to put a positive spin on this situation, but given the very negative fan response to practically every announcement surrounding this movie, I wouldn't hold my breath that we'll see movement on this flick any time soon.

It also didn't help that the cast was totally made up of complete unknowns. With these kinds of films, you usually have one or two established stars to help buttress the cast (ie: Brando and Hackman in Superman, Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellan in X-Men, Michael Caine and Liam Neeson in Batman Begins, etc). That wasn't the case with JLA and it was already getting a rep as a bargain basement production.

So, don't expect to witness the marvel of Armie Jr. in the Batsuit anytime soon. Sorry Dan. {:)

I think it'll get made, but after reading that WB has cast Arnie Hammer, Jr. in the role of Batman, I'm in no hurry to see this come to fruition. What a sucky choice; he looks more like Jimmy Olsen's little brother... :#

That bit of news now makes me wonder just who else has been miscast for the project; screw this youth movement direction they're taking. Maybe the strike is a blessing in disguise... might give them a chance to reassess their current choices.
    Bats played by a guy named..."Arnie" 8-)

If this strike continues to go on for the foreseeable future, does that mean that less films will come out in theatres in 2009?

Pretty much my reaction as well. As for the rest of the cast the AICN piece, Scott Porter for Superman, Megan Gale for Wonder Woman, Adam Brody for Flash, and the rapper "Common" for Green Lantern. Megan Gale looked pretty good in some pics I've seen (but also pretty meh in others) but I can't speak to the acting chops of any of these people. A quick glance at their IMDB pics did not inspire much confidence though. Given everything I've read so far, I'm in no hurry for this one to get made, at least not with the current creative team in place.

Arnie would be bad enough, but it was actually ArMie; I'm pretty sure he's the great grandson of billionare/philanthropist Armand Hammer.

The "Angels and Demons", the sequel to DaVinci Code has already been pushed back. The next Superman film (if it every gets made) is also sure to be affected. The further we go into 2008 with this lingering strike, the more stuff will be affected. Hopefully, The Punisher and other genre films in production have finished scripts.

Don't worry about The Punisher sequel; they wrapped up shooting about a month ago minus minor re-shoots here & there.

You have to think that movie theatre franchises are going to suffer terribly behind all of this by next year. A couple more months of this drama and it'll be outright crippling to their numbers.

I smell a return to the double feature sets of old just for them to stay above water... I miss those anyway. :)

And thanks for the correction on Armie...man, that sounds even worse. :#

I have a feeling the Ray Stevenson turn won't do as poorly as the 2004 version from a box-office standpoint. As a matter of fact, it'll do much better than expected, but sue me for having a soft spot for Frank Castle & The Hulk anyway. :v

I may be totally off about this but I think that Lexi Alexander & Stevenson both know what's at stake with this reboot/sequel/whatever because you have to realize that it almost didn't get greenlit after the arguable stinker the 2004 supposedly was. Although I loved it, I also think that it was done the wrong way.

Jonathan Hensleigh tried to persuade the viewers, with its tone, into having sympathy for Castle and there's nothing wrong with that since it's in the Punisher's mythos to suffer but it's a tad overdone.

He's already pretty much a one trick pony and a slight rip-off of The Executioner novels as it is so my guess is that he was going for weight in the subtext.

Thomas Jane gave a good performance but the movie on a whole was a little too downtrodden and less mowing down of bad guys. I did see the extended version awhile back and the film's even better than what I actually paid for. Why they elected not to put this in theatres is beyond me seeing that it tied up alot of questions I left the movies asking and would've generated a heathier box office take plus solidifying a sequel much sooner.

Dolph, on the other hand, played the emo as he went along...whether it was on purpose or not. :)) It also had a better plot, better score and BETTER ACTION. Then, Spec...it's a nostalgia thing for me too I suppose. There's nothing like 80s action flicks and I love this one. :D

    In a roundabout way...yes. :D

William Hurt opens up a little on the new Hulk film. I've put spoiler tags on his info just to be on the safe side...

    Hurt on Hulk/Iron Man
Source: Sarg92, Advanced Dark, Toy Man, Terracotta January 20, 2008

We're not sure if William Hurt was supposed to say this much, but he said quite a bit to MTV at the Sundance Film Festival about starring in The Incredible Hulk and the film's cross-over with Iron Man. (Spoilers Ahead!) Exhibit A:
"I have a scene with Iron Man, with Robert Downey Jr.," the Oscar-winning actor told MTV News Friday at the Sundance Film Festival. "It's a funky scene"... "I don't know how it'll work," Hurt admitted, saying it was a thrill to appear as General Thaddeus Ross during Downey's scene. "I know it's weird [to work with a character from another movie], and to know it's a device. We did something; I don't know what that's going to be like [to watch]."

He goes even further, detailing a big spoiler. Exhibit B:
"Liv Tyler, I play her father, General Ross," he explained. "There's a scene, and during that scene there are a number of things happening. [Hulk] has beaten Abomination, and then there's a crowd that gathers around, and they realize that he's beaten Abomination. That Abomination was the one who was killing for just the joy of killing; Hulk is not the one... "It's the moment of turn," Hurt added, "when society's relationship with Hulk stops being so stupid."

New pics of Stevenson as The Punisher have surfaced on the director's site. These are pretty small but I'm sure larger ones will float around on the net pretty soon. So please excuse the size on these two...IMO, this Castle looks hardcore MAX Series...not pretty-boy Jane-ish.

    Here's a clip from Alexander:
My team and I spent a lot of time researching the comic books, Tim Bradstreet’s art and all the reference films we decided upon. I think we watched one of those films at least 25 times during prep. Thank God Montreal has an endless supply of excellent wine and cheese, which made those sessions much more enjoyable.

Tim Bradstreet was especially helpful to us during prep and we were lucky enough to get him on the phone a couple of times to pick his brain. So you can imagine how stoked I am to get Tim’s first reaction to what he had seen of the film so far. Here is an excerpt from his email: “I had an opportunity to see a ton of stills from the film and it looks sensational. The Jigsaw makeup is top. LOVED seeing Doug Hutchinson look like such a hard assed nut, and of course, Ray Stevenson looks AWESOME. They lit a lot of it like I light and [they] did a great job.”

I know you guys haven’t really seen any of my favorite shots of Ray Stevenson as Frank Castle, so I am attaching a couple of stills. Hope you enjoy them and, if I make it down from the roof without freezing any limbs off, I’ll update you on the post progress very soon.

    Onwards and upwards!
    Lexi

:)) Hey, Jane was good I won't lie; I loved that Punisher movie too. But by comparison to Stevenson on looks alone, he does look like a noob.
Since you're talking about loyalties, Tony, you should speak to my son about his angst for Jane after the man told him to his face, while shaking his hand, that his sequel was a shoe-in at a Q&A a year or so ago.

Not sure how to say this Rogue, but based solely on the photos on this page, Jane looks way more Punisher-esque than Stevensen - it is me or is his head really flat in that pic?

The kid's definitely hardcore. And while I understand his disappointment, those kinds of things happen in Hollywood; what looks like a done deal one second can fall apart completely in no time. Just ask William Shatner about his appearance in Trek 11. :(
Don't make me praise Lundgren's Castle more...I know somewhere Spec is looming to pounce on my statements once I do. :)) :))

I mentioned that to him; he got all pensive and sullen; and then you know what he said? "I still talk to God sometimes, I ask him if what I'm doing is right or wrong. I'm still waiting for an answer, and until I get one, I'll be waiting, watching. THE GUILTY WILL BE PUNISHED! " :))

:)) Hey, Jane was good I won't lie; I loved that Punisher movie too. But by comparison to Stevenson on looks alone, he does look like a noob.

Not sure how to say this Rogue, but based solely on the photos on this page, Jane looks way more Punisher-esque than Stevensen - it is me or is his head really flat in that pic?
Since you're talking about loyalties, Tony, you should speak to my son about his angst for Jane after the man told him to his face, while shaking his hand, that his sequel was a shoe-in at a Q&A a year or so ago.

Keeping true to form as a rubberneck, allow me to offer praise for the Punisher for you. Did you know that the producers actually wanted Michael Pare for the role? Now, that would have been a travesty. I would hate to bet on who has the worst speech :)) So to make them and some of the rest of us happy, they dyed the Dolphster's hair black and we were rewarded with the soot-covered, sewer dwelling, noble Swede instead. True karma :)) :)) :))
