Interesting...very interesting. I would never have pegged Branagh for a comic book adaptation, but of any, Thor would be the best.

You and me both, darenhat. I hope that he can approach the character faithfully or in my fanboyishness, make sure that the hero has his winged helmet & red cape.

I'd have thought that something like this would be beneath Branagh's taste, you know...comic books and all.

Again, more baby steps in the right direction B-) :

    Green Lantern Eyeing Spring Start
    Source:FirstShowing.net September 29, 2008

FirstShowing.net caught up with producer Donald De Line, who says the Greg Berlanti-directed Green Lantern is nearing principal photography:

Earlier today I caught up briefly with producer Donald De Line, who is developing the Green Lantern film, and asked him for an update. He told me that "a new draft of the script came in" and they're "gearing up to start shooting early spring." While it's not confirmed, he added that "it's coming together and I'm excited about it. Hopefully we'll make it to start gate. We're really close - really close."

The Warner Bros. Pictures project is based on the comic that was created in 1940 by writer Bill Finger and artist Martin Nodell.

Kenneth Branagh is an interesting choice to direct Thor. He brings that certain air of legitimacy that Marvel seems to be after and like Darenhat says, given his resume he can probably coax some good dialog out of his stars.

As for Green Lantern, I'm hopeful that it will get the green light (no pun intended) if only because it seems to be further along in development than any other DC property, and given the bucketloads of cash that comics movies made this past summer I'm inclined to think that WB wants to get something else into the pipeline ASAP.

And since we're talking comics, how about Josh Holloway as Captain America? I've been watching reruns of Lost on G4 and SciFi (now that it is on a regular schedule I can finally follow the plot) and I think he'd make a pretty decent First Avenger.

I have never watched an episode of LOST but I have to agree with you that he at least looks the part.

As if Smallville wasn't bad enough, it now looks like the deranged minds of WB's Kelly Souders and Brian Peterson want to subject us to the adventures of The Graysons, a proposed one hour TV show focusing on Dick Grayson (the future Robin) and his family before they were murdered by Tony Zucco and met up with Bruce Wayne / Batman.

The quick synopsis at Variety has all the hallmarks of your typical CW melodrama: "first loves, young rivals and his family as he grows up". And if this follows the same track as Smallville, we'll end up with a 30-something Dick Grayson before he even meets up with Bruce Wayne. 8-)

Positively one of the DUMBEST ideas I have ever heard from WB/DC thus far and I have to be one of the biggest Batman fans alive. Who cares about Dick Grayson or his family before he became Bruce Wayne's ward?
I never cared for the circus anyway. DUMB! X-(

The news is very undeserving in TDK thread but I found it interesting enough to post here. It seems that there are many who share our concerns over this proposed GRAYSONS tv series that WB wants to put out.

This current poll conducted by Superherohype.com:

Do you think "The Graysons" TV series on The CW is a good idea?

    Bad idea. 66.7%
    Not sure yet. 23.3%
    Good idea. 10.0%

    Total votes: 4961

I've a feeling that the numbers will only swell in the direction of "NO". At least I hope that they do. I can almost bet that the 10% wanting this to come to fruition are no older than 10-13 year old crowd. 8-)

Please excuse the placement of this post but this is news to me. I realize this isn't a comic book to my knowledge at least. Obidiah Stane/The Dude talks about the Tron sequel? I didn't even know they were considering one.

Jeff Bridges on the Tron Sequel
Source: The Guardian October 6, 2008

The Guardian spoke recently to Jeff Bridges about the anticipated Tron sequel. Here are his quotes on the project:

Is that why you signed up for the new Tron movie?
Yeah, that's another unique, wild experience that was too good to turn down. Engaging in that world again feels just like it did all that time ago. Basically, I'm still a child, I love being childlike, and here was another chance to play with these crazy toys. And the cutting-edge technology makes it exciting. Doing the teaser trailer for Comic-Con, I had my first experience of motion capture. And that's turning the industry on its head. It's amazing being part of that.

There's such a retro love for Tron. How do you bring it up to date?
Well, when we made Tron there was no internet, no cellphones. But now we have motion capture, so I think we'll get a far more successful version of the story, which is someone literally getting sucked into a video game. When we did King Kong in the 70s, one minute you'd have a shot of Rick Baker in this big suit and then you'd cut to this 80ft stiff model, and they looked nothing alike. Compare to that Peter Jackson's King Kong the technology is there and they did a wonderful job. I thought they created a beautiful Kong. So I hope that'll be the same for Tron.

Walt Disney Pictures is expected to release Tr2n in 2010.

For the record, I LOVED this film when I saw it in '82. It will be interesting to see where this goes with computer graphics being as advanced as they are now.

That's awesome news, Rogue! Tron was a great concept, and the film still holds strong today even though it's well over twenty years old. Oddly enough, I was watching my recently acquired 'Iron Man' DVD and thinking about Jeff Bridges in Tron.

I agree. Now if they could only find a way to bring back actor David Warner. He plays a great villian. B-)
Unfortunately, Mr. Warner hates TRON from what I remember reading years ago. Pity.

    Here's a Marvel movies update:

Marvel to Film Next Four Films at Raleigh Studios
    Source:Marvel Studios October 7, 2008

As Marvel Studios, a subsidiary of Marvel Entertainment, Inc., powers up to begin production on its next highly anticipated slate of films, the studio has made an agreement with Raleigh Studios to film each of Marvel's next four films at Raleigh's facility in Manhattan Beach, CA. The four projects to be produced at the studio facility over the next three years include Iron Man 2, Thor, The First Avenger: Captain America, The Avengers. Keeping these four major tent pole film productions in Southern California allows the studio access to outstanding crews and resources and makes Marvel the largest tenant on the Raleigh lot. Additionally, Marvel Studios will move its Beverly Hills-based executive and production offices to Raleigh's facility in Manhattan Beach.

"In making this deal with Raleigh to produce our upcoming films at the Manhattan Beach Studios, we are most excited about keeping our film production here in California and taking advantage of the best crews in the Los Angeles area," stated Louis D'Esposito, Marvel's President of Physical Production. "All of our production partners on these upcoming films have been incredibly accommodating in terms of their creativity and financial structures, allowing us to remain in California. Raleigh Studios has long been known for the superior quality of its film production facilities and we know that Manhattan Beach will be the ideal location to produce our movies to the highest standards that our fans expect."

"We are thrilled that we were able to find a way to make this deal work for Marvel," said Michael Moore, Raleigh Studios President. "We could not have asked for a greater compliment than having a quality company like Marvel put their faith in us to provide a home for its film productions."

The Marvel live action releases to be filmed at Raleigh Manhattan Beach Studios are scheduled to arrive in theaters beginning in 2010 and going through 2011. Specifically the release dates are Iron Man 2 on May 7, 2010; Thor on July 16, 2010; The First Avenger: Captain America on May 6, 2011; and The Avengers on July 15, 2011.

Raleigh Manhattan Beach Studios first opened for operations during 1998. This studio consists of 14 sound stages on 22 acres with an additional 300,000 square feet of office and support space. As a result of this venture, Raleigh Studios along with its sister company Hollywood Rentals, are now the largest operator of independent film studio facilities and production services in North America.

I've also read that Paramount has reached a distribution with Marvel's future film franchises (Thor, Captain America, Avengers, and of course Iron Man) making the hoped for cohesive Marvel film universe that Marvel is shooting for much easier to achieve. More here: Paramount Goes Marvel

There was also a recent article on IGN that confirmed that Captain America will indeed be a WWII period piece and will follow his comic book origins very, very closely. More here: Captain America Movie

And not to leave DC out in the cold, another article at IGN quotes Kevin Spacey as saying he will be getting "big bucks" to reprise his role as Lex Luthor next year in a new Superman movie. More here: Spacey to Return as Lex Luthor?

Good find, Tony.I was wondering if there was any new info on this project.
I really didn't have an issue with Spacey in SR because the story and direction made his character look so stupid & lame. He's no Hackman anyway. However if Lex is to return, let him have a backseat to a new villian this time. DARKSEID.

I wish that they'd just approach Clancy Brown with a boatload of cash and have him shave his head to be the new Lex Luthor. He's relatively the same age as Spacey I believe and alot more imposing.

I cannot read a Superman comic book without hearing Brown's voice in my head on the Luthor parts. B-)

    Oh, I'm such a Timmbot. ;%

    THE INCREDIBLE HULK

Unfortunately for me and quite a few others, the deleted scenes will be limited to about 20 minutes of footage. Those who are fortunate enough to own a Blu-Ray player will get 40 minutes of deleted scenes.

It's almost as if they're trying to punish consumers for not having one. :#

I'm starting to see a subtle powerplay working in Sony's favor. DVDs will be the new VHS by 2011-12.

That's still a copout because Leterrier said there were 70 minutes of deleted footage and he had promised that all of it would be shown. I wouldn't be surprised if Universal is planning a double-dip on this one at some point down the road. Still, I'll be buying this as soon as it comes out and I'll be sure to let you know if there was anything meaningful in the BluRay exclusive footage. I wonder if we'll get to see that scene of Captain America frozen in the ice.

WB Eyes Ryan Gosling for Green Lantern?
    Source:Latino Review October 8, 2008

Latino Review is reporting the rumor that Ryan Gosling is Warner Bros. Pictures' first choice for Green Lantern. Gosling, most known for The Notebook, has also starred in recent pics like Lars and the Real Girl and Half Nelson. He received both an Oscar and Golden Globe nomination for the latter.

Greg Berlanti is attached to direct the studio's big screen adaptation, written by Marc Guggenheim, Michael Green and Berlanti.

The "Green Lantern" was created in 1940 by writer Bill Finger and artist Martin Nodell. Hal Jordan introduced in 1959, a second-generation test pilot, is an ordinary man who was given the power ring and battery (lantern) by a dying alien named Abin Sur. When Abin Sur's spaceship crashed on Earth, the alien used his ring to seek out an individual to take his place as Green Lantern: someone who was "utterly honest and born without fear."

No release date has been scheduled for the film.

I just don't know; Gosling hardly reminds me of Hal Jordan from the books even less, he doesn't seem the superhero type.

I really don't know what to think of Ryan Gosling as GL as I've never heard of him or seen him act - the material he's been in so far isn't the kind of stuff I gravitate to. He does have kind of an oddly shaped face in the pics that I've seen on IMDB but then again that could just be a reflection of the roles he's been in so far. According to IMDB he has already been nominated for an Oscar and Golden Globe so maybe WB is angling for a "prestige factor" if this is true. I wasn't too keen on Robert Downey as Tony Stark or Edward Norton as Bruce Banner, but the both did great jobs in their respective pictures so who knows, maybe Gosling could surprise us as well.

BTW, love the new signature image, though Dan Same seems to be oddly quiet about it. ;)

PM sent. As for Green Lantern, I remember once reading that Gil Kane's original drawings of Hal Jordan were supposed to be inspired by a young Paul Newman. As such, if I were casting this film, that's the look I'd probably be going after.

I don't know about a "prestige factor" because GL isn't Shakespeare, but it should be effectively solid. The character also isn't as dark as Batman is although Jordan, from what I've read of him over 30 years, is a conflicted one.

I envisioned an actor that's just as square-jawed and could play the assertive type that Hal personifies. The setting should be more on Iron Man's level minus the comedy (remember Jack Black?). Don't know if that makes sense to many.
I may end up eating my words if this goes any further and Gosling knocks it out of the park but on the surface, he doesn't look like HAL JORDAN. Sorry.

I'm more than happy that Warner is going through with this but they need to proceed delicately, that means actor, costume, etc. It's not TDK.

Here's some DC Comics casting news that seems ALOT more cooler than the apparent Gosling GL rumor:

    Josh Brolin is Jonah Hex?
    Source:Hollywood Elsewhere October 9, 2008

    5757_400x600.jpg

Hollywood Elsewhere reports that Josh Brolin, who can be seen in next week's W., has signed on to star in Warner Bros. Pictures' Jonah Hex. This has yet to be confirmed by the studio, so stay tuned.

From Crank writers/directors Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor, the film is based on the DC Comics title in which Hex, known for having the right side of his face disfigured and wearing a Confederate army uniform, was a rough-and-tumble gunslinger and part-time bounty hunter whose adventures always ended in blood.

"Jonah Hex," created by by writer John Albano and artist Tony DeZuniga, first appeared in the early 1970s in the issues of "All-Star Western" before graduating to his own series in 1977 that ran for about 10 years. A new series was launched in 2005. The character also had a run in the 1990s that combined the Western genre with supernatural elements.

This is completely under the radar. I was thinking maybe Thomas Jane in the title lead and then this? AWESOME. B-)

I loved this guy's performance in NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN. He's going to OWN Jonah Hex! {[]

Burn, Marvel Sisters! DC is punchin' back! B-)

:)) Quite literally, if your sig is anything to go by.

Jonah Hex strikes me as something of an odd title to turn into a live action adventure; with his odd appearance he's definitely a niche character and I wonder if he can gain mass appeal. At best, I'd expect a Jonah Hex movie to be a moderate hit along the lines of Hellboy. Still, Josh Brolin's craggy appearance does fit the character well. It'll be interesting to see where this ends up.

As for Gosling, let's not get carried away. There's still a long way to go and I'll believe it when I get a formal announcement from WB. In the meantime, I'll have to check out some clips of him to see just what he could bring to the table.

He'll have appeal from me. Do you remember reading the TONY DeZUNIGA-drawn comics from the 70s? Pure classic comic book.

You're right about the Hellboy level audience though but I don't care. Besides, I love westerns. If only Sergio Leone was still around to helm this. B-)

Have you seen FRACTURE, Tony? Gosling's a good actor but if that rumor turns out to be true, he better do his homework on Hal Jordan.

I want a FRANCHISE out of this hero and they don't need to screw this one up. GL could easily be a 400+ million dollar b.o. take film.

The Sisters are officially worried now; they'll probably write Marvel to speed things up for them. :))

Here's another article on the Gosling news:

Thu Oct 9, 2008 — by Josh Wigler
Hal Jordan and 'The Real Girl'
    Gosling Rumored for 'Green Lantern'

It's hardly a secret that Warner Bros. is looking to put Green Lantern into the skies next year. Numerous reports have indicated the studio's interest in developing the DC super-hero project, including Production Weekly's acknowledgment of the project as in "active development" and numerous reviews confirming that a script exists. In fact, the buzz across the net and at the DC offices is that the script is just "fantastic."

With Hal Jordan set to slip that ring on in the near future, it's no wonder that casting speculation has taken the internet by storm. Many fans champion Nathan Fillion of Firefly fame. David Boreanaz (Angel, Bones) was considered a frontrunner for the role due to illustrator Brian Murray's official concept art using the actor as a model. Although the Boreanaz casting has been debunked by numerous sources since, speculation continues.

Latino Review is the latest to join the fun with a new report. According to their sources, the WB wants Ryan Gosling as Hal Jordan. Though just another rumor for now, the Web site has a solid track record of out-scooping studio press releases in the trades. Earlier this year, they broke the news that Jake Gyllenhaal would be Dastan in Prince of Persia a month and a half before Variety released the official announcement. The site also reported on Jason Reitman's attachment to Up in the Air a day in advance of a studio sanctioned press release.

For now, Gosling's casting should be taken as a rumor only -- but given Latino Review's history, the actor is likely to be on the studio's short list at least.

Fans of Green Lantern are likely divided by Ryan Gosling's potential involvement. Some will point to The Notebook as irrefutable proof that the thespian should have a court restriction against the beloved DC superhero.

On the other hand, Gosling comes from a similar background as Christian Bale, the current Bruce Wayne on film. He's starred in several indie films such as Lars and the Real Girl, and even gained an Oscar nomination for his role in Half Nelson. It's hard to deny that Gosling has the chops to defend Space Sector 2814.

Green Lantern focuses on hot-shot test pilot Hal Jordan coming into possession of the Green Lantern power ring, which allows him to do anything within the limits of his imagination and will power. The film is produced by Donald De Line and Andrew Haas, with a script from Greg Berlanti, Marc Guggenheim and Michael Green.

Exclusive: DC Comics President Gives Superman Update

By Kellvin Chavez on October 9, 2008
The only thing better than living in New York, is being at a party in New York. I was out on the town this past Monday night with my partners in crime El Mayimbe and Ron Henriques at the special WATCHMEN presentation that was scheduled for a hand full of media outlets. The footage we watched to me was very good. It had its moments. I definitely believe just like SIN CITY, you will either love it or hate it. I loved the opening sequence explaining the creation and the rise of the Minutemen, which quite frankly blew me away! It was that good. And honestly while I’ve never read the book, I must say I was inspired to immediately go out and buy one just so I am up to speed.

Anyhow, the real action didn’t happen inside the screening, but rather outside of it. While mingling around with guest and watching my partner in crime sneak food into his Latin pockets, I saw the one and only Paul Levitz, the President of DC Comics. I walked over to him and had a moment to hang out and chat with him briefly. I could not keep my mouth shut and had to ask the questions that Latino readers are asking. So I went in straight for the kill.

“So Paul, what the **** is happening with Superman?” Well not in those words actually. Paul looked over both shoulders like he was about to score some basura and said that things are still brewing.

In fact, he told me that “Last week Brandon Routh has come around the offices in New York and Los Angeles as of late to talk about Superman and what we want to do”……blah blah blah!

At first I thought it was the Apple Martini I was drinking but I soon realized that I just heard a bombshell go off in my brain! Brandon? He did say Brandon Routh was coming around talking about Superman! Why the hell would they be talking to Brandon if he was not going to be part of the reboot? Because he’s still in the mix!!!

The truth of the matter is that the way Mr. Levitz made it seem is that they love Brandon as Clark Kent and that he’s just a great guy, which I agree. I mean remember we at Latino Review told EVERYONE he was going to be the next Superman.

At that point my instincts kicked in and I continued with the questions. “What about Batman 3? You guys must be going crazy over the success of that film.” Paul pulls the cocktail shrimp from his mouth just enough to see him smile. I asked when were they going to get this Superman reboot done and he gave me a look like he was about to tell me the answers to the mysteries of the world. “Everyone is waiting for Nolan to sign on for another Batman, once that happens, the release date for Superman and all other future projects will follow.”

I could not believe my ears! Not only did my partner in crime blast wind next to me, but basically Superman’s future hangs in the balance until we have a concrete signature on the Batman contracts! The party was getting good, and the drinks were flowing making this just as easy as prom night picking. So I pressed with my questions. “What about Green Lantern and Supermax? How is that moving along?” Paul continued that Green Lantern was actually moving faster than Supermax, which to me makes sense because the Green Lantern script was badass!! If you do not remember the review we did, here it is again. The party went into the night, and the drinks continued to flow, finally I knew I had to leave as soon as my partner in crime started to stumble all over the place, looking kind of green in the face.

As of now just a few moments ago another inside source confirmed that yes they are waiting for Chris Nolan to sign the deal with the next Batman, and that they want him to commit to a July 2011 release. If that happens then the following superhero films will be released.

    Green Lantern Summer 2010
    Batman 3 Summer 2011
    New Superman reboot Summer 2012

Also in the mix is THE FLASH.

Green Lantern against Iron Man 2 maybe? Hmmm...I like that match-up. B-)

Nice to hear that Brandon Routh is still in the mix as far as Superman, but I think waiting till 2012 is not such a great idea and personally, I wouldn't mind seeing WB fast-track it for a holiday 2010 release (is there a law that all big comic book films have to come out in the summer?).

As for IM and GL both coming out in summer of 2010, that's fine by me. We saw this past summer that you the movie business can support multiple comic book blockbusters. As long as they're not released too closely to one another I'm sure both films can do big business, assuming they're well made of course.

I would also hope that WB takes a page from the Marvel filmmaking model and throws in a few surprises. For example, if in fact the next Superman film doesn't appear until 2012, have him make a quick cameo in Green Lantern to generate some buzz and start building anticipation.

Damn it, Tony! My son brought that suggestion up just the other night. I have to agree with you both because waiting that long to put out another Supes flick is really silly IMO. Keep the character in people's minds by giving him a cameo.

Get Routh back and get this thing going. It doesn't have to be a summer release; there are dollars that can be made during the holiday season too.

I've always thought that The Incredible Hulk might've had more of a b.o. impact had it not gotten loss in this year's overwhemingly stiff competition of Batman, Indy & Iron Man. That's suicide.
