BTW Rogue, I see by your new sig photo that Superman Returns continues to traumatize you. What are we to do with you when he starts filming the sequel?
Yes- I was truly hurt by this effeminate effort; I love the Superman character a great deal and this outing just didn't deliver for me. My wife doesn't care for the comic medium yet she thought that this was soft for a superhero flick- and she's a Lifetime Channel fan!

Y'know Rogue,I'm not especially angry at little Superboy existing--not in a movie where Luthor is actually let out of prison following the magnitude of his crimes in Superman I and Superman II.
Killing Superman's and Lois's son would only make the next film a tragedy.Who knows what would happen to the psyches of Superman and Lois?It wouldn't be a time for celebration.
No,IMO if anyone should be blamed for the existence of his little boy,it's Superman-- who obviously wasn't carrying protection when he and Lois consumated their relationship. As a direct result, there's a fatherless child.
But all of this is correctable;after all,Superman can always spin the Earth around backwards to the point before he made love to Lois and also before he decided to fly off on his journey to see if there were any Kryptonians still alive on those chunks of Kryptonian debris. It's what Richard Donner would probably do.Maybe while he's at it,Superman could go further back in time and stop Luthor from being born--after roasting Hitler alive with his heat vision.
What really bothered me about Superman Returns was the unfortunately weak story(I liked the cast)--plus the important fact that Superman didn't part his hair on the left side of his head like he had in the previous movies and usually does in the comics, and it wasn't even black but brown this time around.
Writing the kid out of the storyline will be quite the challenge. And truthfully, I'm not convinced that Singer gets it. Something tells me he either doesn't understand or doesn't care about just how upset most people were with some of his "creative decisions" in Superman Returns. His rationalizations for the film's relative disappointing box office clearly tell us that he refuses to take any of the blame.
Personally, I'd have the entire first movie be a hallucination induced by Mongul after capturing Superman. Have SR#2 open with an idyllic scene of Supes and Jason having fun and spending some quality time together. Then, just as the syrup is about to send RogueAgent into a diabetic coma ... pan the camera back and out thru this false reality to show Supes strapped into some futuristic holographic projection system and Mongul gloating over his comatose body. Have Lois (now conveniently played by someone else) sneak in and wake Supes up (or, better yet, have Batman do it in a cameo). A couple of quick Nolanesque flashbacks will bring us up to speed. And voila! No more Jason. No more Richard. No more Bosworth as Lois. Also, a villain like Mongul would be a good physical challenge for Superman and the inevitable battle where the Big Boy Scout takes a measure of revenge would be fun to watch.
Something similar to this worked in the comics, why not try it in a movie. After all, when you get right down to it, there really wasn't anything all that memorable in SR anyway.

I probably won't be seeing this until it appears on DVD. I never cared much for either Ghost Rider or Nicholas Cage so I don't feel compelled to check it out. Still, I don't know what to make of this one. Most of the reviews (including those from many genre websites) have absolutely savaged the film. In spite of this it had a very healthy opening weekend, although I have a feeling the box office is going to plummet in its second week.
Since this is kind of the official Wonder Woman thread, I thought I'd post what I just stumbled across. Arguably, this could be a separate thread in the CR forum, but I think this thread is more appropriate. Anyway, I got this from CinemaBlend, which I've visited a few times, but I can't really testify to its validity. Anyway, here it is:
Eva Green as Wonder Woman?
By Josh Tyler: 2007-02-22 02:16:54
Earlier this month the news broke that Joss Whedon was off Wonder Woman, and that Warner Brothers had bought up someone else’s script and planned to move on to making the movie without him. Now that the big, lumbering, Whedon roadblock is out of the way, maybe this movie can finally get made.
Hey, I like Whedon’s work but the guy has had the Wonder Woman ball in his course for what… two years? He had plenty of time to do something with it, and didn’t. Maybe that’s why Warners gave him the boot.
With Whedon out of the way, it’s time to restart the Wonder Woman casting rumor machine. I’m afraid we’ll have to be the first to start it. Don’t curl up in a ball just yet, because the name that just floated across my desk for the part is, in my humble opinion, the best choice yet.
Tonight a scooper, who’s given us good information before, emailed me to let me know that Casino Royale star Eva Green may be up for the part of the Amazonian superhero. Now hold on, don’t run around screaming that she has it. Right now they’re considering several different people. Even if this rumor is true, Eva is just one of the names on their shopping list.
The good news is that maybe someone will actually get the part this time. The WB seems hot to get this movie made, expect things to move a little more quickly now that the Whedon speedbump is gone.
As for Eva Green, I can’t imagine anyone more perfect. She has the look, she has the physique, and more importantly she can really act. Don’t judge her simply by the disposable Bond babe thing in Casino Royale.
"Disposable Bond babe?!" Them's fightin' words! But I don't know what to make of this. Thoughts?

Thank you for posting this, H.B. Now for my thought...
No way, buddy...She wasn't at all hot as a Bond girl and she has terrible, chicken legs which at least to me is unforgivable. She's too Goth- looking for WW, too. It's blasphemous to even consider her Carter's successor.
Anyway everyone here has mentioned better candidates than Green.

I wish I had the faith in Singer that you do,Rogue.Frankly,I don't think he's imaginative enough to look at anything that hasn't already been on a movie screen before. He's limited himself to Richard Donner as his primary reference for all things Superman--which I think is a terrible idea(not to mention incredibly lazy).I predict we'll be seeing Zod and Ursa and Whatizname in SR#2.
What Warners should have done is hire Paul Dini to write the screenplay for SR.His work on the animated Superman TV series was exceptional and brought new life to the character.Heck, his take on Luthor--much closer to the recent DC version--made that villain an intelligent and formidable adversary for the Man of Steel.
No creative input from Singer-just directing, nothing more.No Superman recast as a deadbeat dad.None of this,"Wouldn't it be interesting if Lois Lane was a single mother and her child's father was secretly Superman? That way,he could have superpowers,TOO!!!!"
I wonder how Singer--the lifelong Star Trek fan-- would've appreciated a new Star Trek film that begins with Kirk and Spock dying, and the Federation deciding to go with entirely sentient starships. No crews any longer--just talking thinking space ships. That procreate.

Gotta agree with Rogue on this one; Eva Green leaves me absolutely cold and while she is physically attractive (when she isn't all goth, that is) I really don't see her as being able to pull off a physical role like WW. Her accent might also work against here. Pass for me as well.

I also doubt Singer can pull it off. As I mentioned above, it looks to me like he still doesn't get that a lot of people HATED what he did with the Superman mythos. Either that, or he just doesn't care. The sad thing is that if we get another Superman Returns, that may kill the franchise for another 20 years or more. WB ought to get Paul Dini to write it and a proven action director like Brett Ratner or Jonathan Mostow to direct it. Let Singer take a stab at Logan's Run (his other pet project).

Whoa! That's quite a storyline. Is that your idea or a rumor about where Trek XI is supposedly going?

) You think that he's hacking up Superman, what do you think he'd do with the Trek? )
I'd picture Singer taking the ST series out a whole new door with Kirk contracting VD from sleeping with too many green & purple women and Spock getting in touch with his feelings totally; his angst stemming from his mother denying him a certain little protuberance as an infant.
He'd probably cast Bea Arthur as Spock's mom in true MAUDE fashion. 8-)
Odds at work are that we will see Zod & Co. once again.

Absolutely NOT Tony.At least,I sincerely hope not. It's just the most extreme situation for a ST fil that I could imagine and it'd probably upset Singer as much as his half-baked ideas for Superman have for Kal-El's fans.
I realize there's often a snobbish attitude moviemakers exude whenever it comes to dramatizing comics--Sam Raimi and Christopher Nolan excepted--but I don't see how difficult it is do a bit more research on Superman beyond looking at some of the previous movies. You know, check out some of those spiffy publications many filmmakers who wouldn't be caught dead reading a mere comic book like to call "Graphic Novels".Or at least read Les Daniels' book on Superman.Or that great collection of Superman material called variously Superman-From the '30s to the '70s or the later iteration,Superman-From the '30s to the '80s.Or any of the other DC collections of Superman stuff.
Of course,if Singer and his writers simply can't bear to look at comics("Those little pictures make my eyes hurt...") they could watch the Dini/Timm Superman animated TV show and steal some ideas from that.Learn about the subject-don't just be content to regurgitate what came before. That's all I ask.
Maybe the answer lies in getting new writers more familiar with Superman than the guys who were used for SR.I recall in an interview in Starlog one of the SR writers explained why they used Luthor again, saying(as he recalled looking at some other Superman villains in some recent comics),"I don't KNOW that character...I don't LIKE that character."
Now that J.J.Abrams has jumped ship and won't be doing the new Star Trek movie after all,I wonder if Singer will offer to take his place...
Thanks WG, your little Trek pitch was pretty far out and I wasn't sure if you were serious or kidding. ;% Where did you read that Abrams left the project though? Last I heard, he was still on as producer but might get somebody else to direct it.
I'm still not sure what to think of Abrams and Trek XI. I really can't say I care much for his shows and movies to date and the idea of a prequel/reboot involving a young Kirk and Spock doesn't sound like the most original or forward looking concept.
It's too bad; there are so many talented and passionate writers out there who could probably come up with dynamite stories for Superman, Trek and just about any other IP in their sleep. But it seems like these productions are becoming more and more just ego trips for "big-name" producers like Abrams and Singer to put their personal stamp on whatever they're working on at the moment.

Too true. The big names like to play with these things and we're agreed that that's not always a good idea.I read about Abrams leaving ST on IGN,I think-maybe he'll still produce but he won't be directing.
I've recently read about Sam Raimi getting the movie rights to both The Shadow and The Spider, which excites me.I'm almost as much a fan of the great pulp heroes as I am of those in the comics, and if anyone can do a terrific Shadow movie it's Sam-as Darkman showed.Plus, aside from the Columbia serials, I don't think The Spider has ever been put on the screen-which is weird, since he's as dramatic as they come.Maybe Raimi will go after Doc Savage as well. It's nice to see at least one fan exerting some form of creative control over these kinds of projects.
I don't mean to sound so damn cranky when talking about the quality of these comics-based movies because in all fairness, I think the people who make them--including Singer--really think they're doing their very best. But geek that I am,I just want and expect more -especially considering the untapped talent available and the incredible strides in CGI.Overall,SR was a fine tribute to Chris and Dana Reeve. Not the greatest Superman movie ever made, but I do think the filmmakers' hearts were in the right places. They just have to understand that they'll need more sophisticated stories if they hope to keep these types of films going.Getting the costumes right(or kind of right)isn't enough.
I suspect Iron Man will make a concerted effort to be the kind of superhero movie that'll appeal to both the fans and audiences who might otherwise not see a comics movie.I hope so.I definitely think The Dark Knight will succeed at this, regardless of The Joker's appearance. And of course,Spider-Man 3 promises to be very good as well.
The main problem being how could they have Superman and Batman in the film? Christian Bale and Brandon Routh are hardly likely to be available and it would seem odd to use different actors. Maybe it would be a good idea to leave the characters out altogether. If this film ever gets made I hope The Flash is involved. I had a soft-spot for that character when I used to buy comics.

Thanks for that tidbit of news, Arthur although this would be very tedious to get off of the ground. Most of the characters would have to be no-named cheap actors. Bale & Routh would send the budget over the edge alone.
Here's who would work:
Terry Crews as Martian Manhunter (He's black so it wouldn't matter because of the character being green to begin with. He has the awesome build not to need padding of any sort)
Ryan Reynolds as The Flash
Jeffrey Combs as The Question
Lynda Carter as Wonder Woman...so?
Val Kilmer as Green Arrow...not certain for sure...
Rachel Weisz as Black Canary
Can anyone think of someone else? I'll let Tony pick his particular Hal.
I wish that Clancy Brown would shave his head; when I read Supes comics over the last 10 years, his voice always pops in my head as I read the Luthor character. He'd be great for this picture.
Also Darkseid played by Michael Clarke Duncan. C'mon, that voice alone.

I'm really too out of touch with mainstream acting talent to come up with any original ideas. WG once said James Marsden would make a good Hal Jordan and I can see that as well.
As to a JLA movie without Batman & Superman, I really don't know if that would work. Their absence would stick out like a sore thumb and whoever was in the movie would be instantly dismissed as the "second stringers". I'd much rather see a World's finest movie or just pick out the stronger characters (Wonder Woman, Flash and Green Lantern) and give them each their own vehicle.

So I just read about a new, direct to DVD Justice League animated movie titled Justice League: The New Frontier. And interestingly enough (to me at least), its going to feature Hal Jordan (voiced by David Boreanz). Anybody know anything about this ???
EDIT: Good old Wikipedia already has some info on this; it is loosely based on the graphic novel of the same name, will feature Silver Age stalwarts Hal Jordan and Barry Allen, and looks to have a PG-13 rating. It is also the first of three planned direct to DVD releases, the other two being Superman: Doomsday and Teen Titans: The Judas Contract. Very interesting.
Very spiffy but, um, where are the Fantastic Four?.
Perhaps this is just one of many promotional posters that will be available. Sort of like they did with the last two X-Men films? Just a guess really...
I like this one though. B-)

I like it too, reminds me of the cover to a comic book I once saw. I just find it amusing that the Surfer has figured prominently in the two teasers and now the poster while we've hardly seen the FF other than Johnny getting his flame extinguished.

I've really fallen out of touch with what's happening in the comics so I decided to pick up a few books to read over the weekend.
The first was DC's Infinite Crisis, the sequel to the classic Crisis on Infinite Earths. The book was a great read, taking events and characters from the earlier mini-series and turning them on their ear. Seeing Superboy Prime's descent into madness and watching Alexander Luthor show himself to be true to the Luthor heritage was a little shocking but still very well presented. The book also had a ton nice moments like the battle of the Superboys, Barry Allen's appearance to help Impulse (who goes thru some major changes himself), the Earth-1 and Earth-2 Supermen kicking the crap out of Doomsday, the GL Corps taking on Superboy Prime, the tragic final battle on the sentient planet Mogo, and the Joker's little cameo at the end. Really fun read and highly recommended for fans of the DC Universe. One of the reasons I'd slacked off on the books was because the major characters of the DCU had become so dark and conflicted and ironically enough, this book addresses that issue head on and offers a resolution that I found particularly hopeful.
I also picked up the Green Lantern: Revenge of the Green Lanterns hardcover, which collects issues 10-13 from the revamped series. The first couple of stories are pretty forgettable, but there is a three parter included wherein Hal Jordan and Guy Gardner (who is such a better character these days) go looking for some other Green Lanterns who were presumed dead when Hal went insane. Their quest takes them to the homeworld of the Manhunters and a truly epic confrontation with The Cyborg - the entity who had destroyed Hal's home town Coast City. Another fun read with some really nifty artwork.

Odds at work are that we will see Zod & Co. once again.

Mardsen comes across too cheerful to be Hal; not right-wing enough. Besides, he was associated with...y'know...

I'll look out for this one.

They're both very good reads; pick up the hardcover versions as they have include additional artwork and other docomentation.
Just a big mess and I didn't like the artwork much.
