So wait are you saying Barry's AVTAK score relied a lot on the Bond theme or not? Because when I listen, I think it relies more on the AVTAK theme song than anything else (I mean "Bond Meets Stacey"/"Wine with Stacey" are merely reprises)

Anyway Cat, it was an interesting read and a great analysis of the score. I happen to love the Pipeline theme and recognized it right away when it was featured in Antonov.

Not. There's the gunbarrel, the taxi chase and... that's it. There are three short unreleased cues that contain the vamp and once the riff, but that's it. Casino Royale will have a lot more Bond Theme than this. :D

"Pipeline" appears in every Arnold/Bond score now, so enjoy finding the rest. :) There'll be lots of it in CR.

I like the AVTAK score. One thing I wish that would be done more in scores is having an action theme - like in AVTAK. Thats the one played in Siberia, Fire Truck chase, fight in the Sutton mansion. Its just a shame that Arnold has never done this.

Oh, there are action themes in almost all the scores... why it's noticeable in AVTAK is because of one flaw - Barry uses the exact same action theme for every type of action. Ski chase, truck chase, freerange and confined fight, doesn't matter... It's the same theme. Most other thematic scores (including Arnolds') develop at least one chase and one fight motive, plus they vary them a lot and use let's say different elements in the different tracks. But this makes them harder to notice - yet if you know what melodies to look for, you'll be surprised how thematic the scores really are.

I dunno if its a problem, I liked when Barry used it in DAF, OP, TLD. It felt as if it made the scores more unique to each film. It hasnt felt as if any musical track has been unique to any of the movies.

The only exception would be the surrender theme used in TND.

Ah, but those are different cases. DAF has mutliple action themes. There's one for fights (used 3,5 times), there are two different chase themes, separate character interaction themes, so there's a lot more than one. OP had one action theme (again used for absolutely everything) sometimes substituted by the James Bond Theme. TLD again has numerous action themes, and that's what really elevates that score. The themes are also easier to identify, because they've been turned into songs as well. It's no wonder Arnold's Surrender is the most memorable for most - DAD is a very strictly thematic action score as well, but the song ('I Will Return') was never heard by anybody except for the MGM music department, so it's really hard to make out - despite appearing in almost every cue! I wonder what would change if it were available...

Thanks for a very interesting read.

(Can I take it that whoever chose the titles for the cues will be horse-whipped in public?)

Actually, I believe the punishment has more to do with a seatless chair and a rope...

Great review, very insightful for us that just listen on the surface. After reading that review, I will listen to the soundtracks in a different way from now on. ;%

Are we talking about "You Know my Name" aka the song that I will singlehandedly destroy because at least Lulu's TMWTGG was somewhat fun to listen to?

No, not YKMN- the cues, ie the pieces of orchestral music heard in the course of the film as opposed to during the titles. Oreb seems to be saying that the titles for these (as listed on the album) were not well selected.
