Bond vs Borat

emtiememtiem SurreyPosts: 5,948MI6 Agent
After the amazing performance of Borat in the US this weekend (it only opened on 800 odd screens and yet beat Santa Claus 3 o no.1 which opened on 3,500!) it's being upped to an extra 2,500 screens: could this threaten our man James? It seemed he had no competition, but it seems the man from Kazahkstan has come from nowhere!

Well, by the time CR debuts, Borat will have been out for two full weeks and starting its third weekend. . .I think most of its business will have been done by the time CR is out.

BORAT is predomiantly a guy flick; CR will be predominantly a chick flick, the ladies will drag their boyfriends to it (if indeed they even need dragging) over other options.

Like with the vote, when it comes to box office women rule.

A chick flick?!? I guess the scene where Bond gets his genitals whacked is some sort of feminist statement. . .?

I think it'll be the most favorably received Bond film by women in quite a long time...there's got to be somewhere where statistics like that are tracked, no? I may be wrong, JMHO.

    :o

A chick flick? Have I been mistaken all this time? I don't recall Reese Witherspoon being cast against Benjamin Bratt ...

    :))

Uh, are folks under the impression Bond fims are solely guy flicks? Remember, half the ad line has always been, "Women want him," lol. I just see women wanting this Bond a lot, and moreso than per usual (which is saying a lot, I know I know...again JMHO, and it'll be interesting to see how the box office fares, what stats and tracking are done, etc.).

More to the point, are you seriously under the impression that Bond films are chick flicks?!?!? :o Sure I know plenty of girls that love Bond films, but I also know more girls that have to be dragged to any action adventure film kicking and screaming... Unisex films, perhaps, but chick flicks...no.

Between BORAT and CR, CR will have more appeal to women, IMO. That was my point, also that Bond has always had a strong female fanbase, arguably stronger than for most action franchises. CR's love story (if it's played right, and early reveiws seem to indicate it has been) will be a huge draw for everybody IMO, but just going on what sells to whom: women buy love stories. Unless folks think men are driving the Harlequin romance novel sales...

And, I've also always thought Craig will go over big with the ladies, many here think that's impossible, like I said it's JMHO.

Regards box office. Would you care to estimate Casino Royale's opening weekend box office take in the US? For reference, DAD's opening was $47million.

    I estimate $40million.

More appeal to women does not equal a chick flick. It just means a more accessible film. CR is very far from being a chick flick. It's a brutal action film.

I would think higher: has there been a satisfying big-ticket film all year? Not IMO. CR seems to have gotten everything right, going on the early reviews. I think audiences are waiting for something that really engages them beyond the get-'em-in-the-door qualities of DVC, POTC2, XM3, etc. Nothing so far has hit on all cyclinders (IMHO), if CR truly is the film the early reviews are making it out to be--and not the overhyped TV movie of the week that was MI3 (didn't see it, just going on what I've gathered is the general concensus, and apologies if that's offbase as I have a reverse-blind spot when it comes to Cruise, just can't stand the guy--and long before it was popular to do so :D), then I can CR hitting very big indeed.

Over $50 mil, opening weekend. But that's if, if, if. I can also see a more modest $30-35 mil. Sure wouldn't want to bet on it--look at how BORAT's doing! And hey, maybe women hate Craig as Bond, I mean a few around here do, so I may well be way, way off. Like I keep saying, JMHO and with no intent to insult anybody. I've thought all along Craig will hit as Bond, and particularly with women, this can't be news around here...

    I don't see why Borat wouldn't appeal to women. It's a comedy.

Well Borat took $24.6 million on just 837 cinemas. If Bond can do anywhere near as good then it'll be huge.

True, em. I just think CR's love story will have the stronger appeal, that's all. It's not an all-or-nothing thing, lol...

That line isn't necessarily directed at women, it's for us too. It's that we want to see how women want him and i think we are talking about the cinematic women in the film and how he deals with those situations !

Chick Flick, so CR=Brigette Jones III?

Well, if Casino Royale takes over $50m on opening weekend then you have potentially got a really big hit. But that's if, if, if as you say.

This is a big week for Daniel Craig in the US. I understand he is appearing on the Letterman show and doing numerous other interviews. If he comes across well it should have a positive effect at the box office.

I'll make a rough estimate. I can't wait to see Casino Royale. But I bet it won't be #1. With the family friendly Happy Feet opening the same day as CR, I'd wager CR comes in second with a box office take of 37.2 million dollars. I'd bet most of the people seeing it will going in the evening hours, hurting the box office take for the day, but making up for it with the more expensive evening tickets. We shall see in 2 weeks.

Is Happy Feet really that long-awaited? Nothing's certain, but I'd be amazed if Bond didn't beat it.

The good reviews make a big gross a lot more likely.

If anything, Borat shows how much people do pay attention to the critics when they universally rave about a movie.

I don't think it's long awaited, it's just family friendly. CR doesn't look to be as family friendly. So my prediction is, a family of 4 or 5 can easily beat a movie that might only bring in a newlywed couple or dating couple. Or the "lets get a babysitter tonight and go see the new Bond movie." I'd personally like to see CR beat Happy Feet at the box office, but I just don't think it'll happen. Here's to hoping.

Wasn't Santa Claus 3 family friendly too? And Borat, on about a quarter of the number of screens, beat it wholly into submission.

My best friend is a lady, and she's shown an actual interest in the series for the first time because of Daniel Craig whom she believes has the same attitude and look that Steve McQueen did. With her saying that, I can see it every time now.
