"Screw 'em." - Daniel Craig, The Best James Bond EverTM
My favorite is the collection of helpful impressions by Mathieu Carratier, the Hamlet of Film Criticism. Mathieu offers the insight that CR has "no focus at all." Which perhaps explains why his other "main criticism" is one that "may not be a criticism" at all. Is he watching a Bond film, he asks? It seems like he isn't. What does our illustrious reviewer make of that? "I'm not entirely sure if this is a good thing or a bad thing ..."
"It may be both ..."
Oh.
Mathieu, I think I can guess the cause of your confusion. Here's what you do: reach way back behind you, grab your neck with both hands and pull as hard as you can. With a little luck, your head'll slide right out. There -- things a little clearer now? -{
In the meantime, Schott70, the Observer wasn't mpressed. I think CnB carries that one as well. At least it's intelligible. Otherwise, though, I think that's just about it for early bad reviews. All the other ones I've seen are very positive.
The TV station WJW channel 8 in Cleveland has a film critic that reviews all of the new movies that are in theaters. David Moss is one of the more well known film critics that is not nationally syndicated, and he gets to interview all of the big name stars as well as lesser known actors.
Just a few minutes ago channel 8 aired David Moss interview with Daniel Craig as well as a very quick review of Casino Royale.
The thing is that the review can't be considered to be possitive or negative about Craig or CR.
The most possitive thing that he said in his review is that the film has good action.
The interview and review were extremely brief, and Moss didn't even indicate whether he thinks the film is good or bad overall, or whether he thinks that Craig is any good in the film or not.
I think were going to be seeing a lot of that, in other words lack of interest one way or another?
As I mentioned earlier in another thread, There isn't any buzz at all for CR in Cleveland right now. There are TV commercials, but there isn't much talk or excitement about the film.
When I'm in the theaters here I will see someone look at a poster for the new Denzell Washington film that is soon to be released and say that it looks pretty good. You will here people talking about a lot of films. But I have yet to hear anyone talking about Casino Royale with the exception of people that I have asked what they think about it or Bond in general.
Are you delusional? David Moss clearly LOVES the movie, and he's having a blast interviewing Craig. You can't tell me that guy is on the fence about whether he likes it or not. Those curious can watch here:
You know, it's okay if you don't want to see CR. No one's going to make you or anything, but don't make stuff up to bolster your argument. It's pathetic.

Daniel Craig says "We set out to make a good movie, and I think we've succeeded" and the reply I heard from Mr Moss was "Ooooh yeah, it's wild! This has a real edge to it, almost like a chill to it in a way!" - obviously what he really meant was "Yeah yeah, whatever".
Well, at least it's getting some publicity in Cleveland... 8-)

Eye, you are so out of touch its unbelievable ( or still in denial).
CR is garnering lots of interest. The majority of its reviews are extremely positive and Daniel Craig is being received positively, hence the need for this thread in the first place! I don't think I have read a negative review yet.
Obviously the film has yet to come out and then the true public opinion will be known but all indicators are that this film will succeed.Apathy is not something that can be associated with CR at this moment in time.

I was just looking at Ebert & Ropers site. On one page at the bottom the have a section for upcoming blockbusters. Casino Royale is on the top of the list, followed by Spidey 3, The Pursuit Of Happines, A Good Year and Apocaplypto
Not sure when they'll review it on their show though.
Some people would complain even if you hang them with a new rope

If they stay true to form, CR should be reviewed the week after it opens. I wonder if Roger will review it. I noticed he contributed a review of "49 Up" on his site, but he hasn't been on the show for a while because of his illness. I'm curious what his reaction to CR would be. He lists GF in his Great Films list, as a kind of stand-in for all Bond films in general. He seems to like the franchise's fantastical elements and formula, so I wonder what he'll say about CR breaking the mold.
To quote my dad from five minutes ago "I don't think I've ever seen a Bond film as hyped as this one, I can't wait!".
That was after 3 CR adverts, which were during "David Walliams - My Life with James Bond" :007)
And thats just the television. Out and about, Casino Royale is everywhere. Posters were plastered all over the buses in the bus station.
I have a group of friends (I admit, most are girls ) and they can't wait either. I have insisted that they come and see the film with me, and at first they were quite reluctant. "It looks so ace, when are we going" one said yesterday.
And finally, to directly quote a female friend of mine's MSN Messenger username:
"mmmm... 007! ..... the names Bond, James Bond! ooooooo he's fit.. the new one"
No doubt some will wax nostalgic for the more fantastical elements of past James Bond films, like the SFX reviewer. Not me.
The argument seems to be: "What wrong with Bond existing in an imaginary world? That's the fun." To me, though, if I want to spend two hours in an imaginary world, I'd see a Star Wars movie. Besides, I don't think CR -- or the Bourne movies or 24 -- are in any way "the real world." They just don't play it as much for laughs as some of the past Bond films.
I find it interesting that, even though a couple of reviews have given it a ho-hum review, pretty much all of them have had great things to say about Craig.
That guy from Cleveland may not have said that Craig is the best Bond since Connery, but many reputed sources that have released reviews have said that he is.
And there are many stories to the contrary of yours regarding buzz. You say that you live in Cleveland, and that, quite frankly, is in a state that right now has a lot more important things they are worrying about than the release of the new Bond movie. Hence the trouncing of the Republicans in the mid-term election in that state. (For the politically sensitive: not badmouthing Republicans or saying that the Democrats are the better choice, because as a Libertarian, quite frankly they both suck about equally)

You'd think at least one of them could throw CnB a bone, wouldn't you? What a shame.
