I see that Roger Moore continues to get good reviews from the critics. As for Timothy Dalton being peevish? That's original, if nothing else.

Moore's interpretation of the role was his own, and I think he received good reviews from critics who liked their Bond a bit 'lighter.' He deservedly has a large fan base.

It's like the bad review The Times just handed out---ol' Cosmo didn't like the direction or intent of the film. As filmmakers, the present-day Eon cannot and will not please everyone; there has simply been such variety in the portrayals, with fans for each, that no picture can be everything to every one. When this is tried, it becomes an 'everything, including the kitchen sink' entry. We've been there, done that.

I was being rather sarcastic. I have very little respect for film critics, whether they be positive or negative. It never fails to amuse me how often they get even basic facts wrong. I treat everything they say with a huge pinch of salt. I can honestly say that the only film critic I have ever had any real respect for is Barry Norman.

...I guess being a critic is good enough work, if you can find it ;) As Moore said, most of them are frustrated writers. :D

The recent interview, where Roger Moore said he gets 'new bad reviews' every time a new Bond actor debuts, was an amusing one...

In all actuality, I have no real recollection of reviews Moore received---at least, not until the '80's, when they were almost universally unkind. Surely, he must have had some segment of support, at some point, from the critical community...?

Sadly,Sir Roger's become an easy target for lazy critics looking to condemn any faults they may find in the more light-hearted and clearly fantastical James Bond films of the past.In a sense,Roger's almost the Rodney Dangerfield of the James Bonds. He rarely gets respect from the mainstream media but his fans appreciate him anyway--and in the end, that's really more important.Even the recently popular Brosnan is now coming in for a few lumps as well. But Craig'll get exactly the same type of treatment as soon as his successor makes his debut(And the critics will say of 007 #7:"THIS is the James Bond we've all been waiting for. Finally at long last Ian Fleming's creation comes to the screen. He's the best Bond since Connery!" etc.).

The Dangerfield parallel is a good one ;) And it's not really fair, since the old boy did get the job done. It's all about the myriad tastes and flavours of this entertainment materiel...

And I do agree that it's always best to take the long-term, strategic, 'geological' view---which reveals that the franchise is, in reality, always changing. :007)
