I'm not saying Metacritic is the word of God, I disagree with some results. But the fact remains -
CR got a very good average. Very good for any genere, fantastic for an action film!
I did a adavanced search on Meatacritic. I wanted action movies with a score above 80. I got 19 hits. The list had seven samurai on top. just imagine how many actioner have been made the last ten years ("Seven samurai" was reviewed after it's re-release) and you get it all in the right perspective!
I have no plans to take over this thread singehandedly with my Metacritic comparisons, but here is one more just to strengthen your suspicions!
326 action movies are rated with less than 80 points on Metacritic. You may remember CR was rataed 80 and 19 are rated above 80 points.
Nice!
I like!
Perhaps I can find it in me to stop writing stuff like that now ...
I have to point out: this is not fans voting! This is an averge of the points given by the most influential critics. They have a model to give different systems (some give 1-5 stars, others give 1-7 clapping boards etc.) the correct weight on the avarage.
There are several resons why the Metacritic average of the Jason bourne Identity is relevant. First it is an action movie and an agent movie, just like James Bond. I (and very many others) think it's a very good spy movie that gave the genre some much needed fresh air. It can also be argued that the Bourne movies have influenced CR. How well that movie did in the reviews compared to CR is very relevant.

I liked it too, and it definitely influenced CR's more down-to-earth direction, which I'm grateful for. But Bourne does owe a debt to Bond, as do all action thrillers with an espionnage theme, I think. I also find Bond a somewhat more compelling character because he has a more defined personality. Bourne is sort of a cipher by comparison.
plus: Bond had amnesia before Bourne had amnesia
but Bourne's amnesia was more highconcept
a spy is not whom he seems to be by definition
so bourne struggles to find out who he is, only to find out he's a man paid to live a lie
still i cant watch that movie without thinking of World Police: "who am I?" "duh, Matt Damonnn...!"
I watched The Bourne Supremacy for the first time tonight and I have to say I thought it was cooler and more exciting than Casino Royale and directed with much more style, verve and punch. The ensemble cast was better and it had a great music score. No one will ever convince me that Eon haven't been watching these films very closely during their hiatus. First time I've seen Karl Urban in anything. He would have made a good 'no-nonsense' young Bond.
The Bourne Identity, I thought was better. Supremacy was just more of the CIA trying to kill Bourne, which is what they were doing for most of the earlier film.
I really enjoyed both The Bourne Identity and The Bourne Supremacy. My one problem with Supremecy was the direction. During the chase scenes, I couldn't see what was going on.
BTW, after I see CR next month, prepare to see dozens of posts by me! I'll be making up for lost time! )

Well of course they've been influenced by Bourne- I can't say there's anything wrong with that. If you thought Supremacy was better, I'm not sure you can either.
Personally I think Supremacy is the best of the two- Identity hits a big slow patch towards the end and I give up. Supremacy is a better thriller with no let up and has a great director and score. I think Casino looks a little muddled and lacking in focus in comparison as it has to try and entertain fans of the silly OTT Bond too, but the new Bond is a much more interesting character than Bourne and the audience is actually supposed to react to him, unlike Bourne. Craig impresses much more than Damon, although that's probably because Damon doesn't really have to do anything apart from the action. The relationship in CR is better handled than Bourne's weird sudden ability to love which comes from nowhere and generally CR works on an emotional and involving level above Bourne.
I really enjooyed both The Bourne Identity and The Bourne Supremacy. My one problem with Supremecy was the direction. During the chase scenes, I couldn't see what was going on.
BS improves a lot on a plasma telly, you can see what the camera is up to better than on the big screen...

As for the flurry of posts you've promised,
nothing will please me more, Dan. But remember -- too much Craig worship isn't healthy.
I mean, just look at me ...:))
I thought you'd already seen CR?

Trust me. By the time I write my 100th post describing how much I idolise Craig, you'll get so sick of me that you'll literally be begging me to stop.
I wish! CR will actually be released in Australia on 7th of December, and per tradition I'll be seeing it on the ninth (a Saturday night.)

I just bought my CR ticket. The first ticket sold on the first screening on the local cinema! It's the norwegian premiere (the norwegian cinema system is very good - many small, interesting movies are shown even in small cinemas and some blockbusters like CR open on many small and big cinemas alike.
Are we still doing this thread? Surely we've all seen it now?
What did you think of the film?
Lou from Little Britain: Don't like it. Don't like director Martin Campbell's tin ear for dialogue, can't do bread and butter scenes though great with action. Lovely cinemtography and locations, but sound levels bad, couldn't hear much of the dialogue.
What about Daniel Craig?
Looks pretty rough in much of the film, didn't like his Bond. A boorish sociopath. Physique like an albino stuffed sausage. Like replacing David Beckham with Wayne Rooney and his most determined, not and bothered. Some good acting, but struggles to be cheeky and upbeat.
The other cast?
Le Chiffre was low key, not bad but no one-upmanship rapport with Bond to speak of. Other villains faded into background mostly. Vesper a real character, but relationship with Bond rushed due to hatchet job with editing.
I recently went to see Casino Royale with high expectations. When the film was over, everybody was in complete awe and amazement, everybody but me. The thing was, the whole time I felt like I wasn't watching a bond film. I know that this film was the true Bond invented by Ian Fleming but I'm having trouble accepting this. Craig was excellent, but the films and books are different from each other. The bond from the films was this superhero who would never bleed, who had this charm and sophistication. But he's grown into a different type of hero.
People even think he's better than Sean Connery and surpassed the classic films. perhaps this is true, but I can’t get myself to believe this. The whole film style was different, the title scene, the story, the villains. Everything. If this were the first Bond Film ever made it would certainly be one of my favorite films but, It just isn’t. I hope future bond films don’t become like this either, otherwise oddly uniformed henchmen may never return to this society.
Is this the place we used to love?
Is this the place that I've been dreaming of?
Oh simple thing where have you gone
I'm getting old and I need something to rely on
I quited liked it, but it wasn't perfect. Certainly not a 007, but perhaps a 005.5
I do not like Daniel Craig. He did a good job, but I can't get past his looks and his dialog delivery reminded me of Timothy Dalton, which is not a good thing.
The scene with Vesper in the shower was quite good (not what you think for those of you who haven't seen the film), but for the rest I thought that she was a shallow imitation of Pussy Galore at first, but without the charm. Her character never quite worked for me.
La Chiffe was very one dimensional. Perhaps this is intentional as he is a minor thug, and not the head of his organization. Still, he didn't strike me as anywhere near as interesting as, say, Dr. No or even Elektra King...
The Ford product placement was a little annoying at first, but it's not like this is a new thing. 007 driving an AMC anyone? The sony placement didn't seem as obvious as in Die Another Day where there were clear shots designed to show nothing other than the p800 for no apparent reason. Then again, I suppose the same could be said for Vesper's digital camera. Grrr.
On the whole I am very pleased with this film. I loved the ending.
What did you think of the film? I liked it alot. I don't think it was the best Bond film of all time but I really enjoyed it. I do have problems with it; most of which are with Campbell and the script.
What about Daniel Craig? The best Bond since Brosnan. He wasn't nearly as bad as I feared (quite good in some ways) but he's still below my three favourite Bonds; Connery, Brosnan and Moore.
The other cast? They were okay. I don't think any were amazing; particularly Green who came across as quite cold IMO.
Your rating from 000 to 007 (being excellent): 005.

Well Dan, we agree on some points, as Craig is below those three, above Dalton and possibly tied with Lazenby.
I hated Green as well, does anyone else think that she can be really scary looking in certain shots, not the best performance.
But you seemed to like it more, I would've given it a 002 or 003.

I did like it alot. But I need to see it again in order to clarify what I feel about it. Who knows, I might decide that I hate it! (Probably not though.)

OMG... SiCo had just talked to me..... it was great, not as close to the book as i would like, not as long or boring as it seems, but it is really more than something.
He has become a Super Saiyan Bond.. he looks great (ok, he might not look like Bond, bu he acts like him, i dare to say that he is (in fact, for the mere fact of played Bond in an official Film makes him an official Bond, so it isn't wrong to say that he is Bond)
-Eva Green: Astonishing... well played... i like her and her role
-Dame Judi Dench: well, she isn't Miles Messervy, but her M is the best of hers... makes one or two mistakes...
-Giancarlo Gianni: Old but Cool Mathis, has a great part and played well, he should help more but blame the script
-Geoffrey Wrigth: Lame, sad and pathetic Leiter... nobody can act if he hasn't got a descent part.
-Caterina Murino:Lovely and sexy, appreciate her while you can
-Mads Michelsen: only in Montenegro (hotel, casino, warehouse)... besides that is not as impactant as he should
-Sebastian Foucaul: Is himself... Kudos
1. Excellent. CR is an improvement on recent efforts. It’s not without its flaws, but it is a huge step in the right direction. The torture scene was remarkable. I often wondered since I read Fleming’s novel how you could film a sequence like that and not make it look like a Tory MP at an S&M party. However, it’s a really menacing scene and you could hear every man in the audience shift uneasily as Bond got whacked in his 00’s.
2. Brilliant performance. I hope they give him more one-liners next time. He might be tough and gritty, but he can deliver a decent line when it’s given to him.
3. Eva Green was stunning; dark hair, pale skin and complicated.
Judi Dench. At last, I got to here a Dame of the British Empire deliver a line like ‘********-covering pricks.’ Can they make her say motherf***** in the next one? Seriously though, her verbal sparring with Bond was one of the highlights of the film for me.
Jeffrey Wright. Not given much to do, which is a shame considering the talent this guy’s got. Hope they bring him back and don’t revert to changing Leiter for every other film.
Mads Mikkelson. Quietly threatening. Much more threatening when swinging a rope between someone’s legs.
