Never said it wasn't! I'm sure it will surpass Borat (though the producers of that flick have made a much, much bigger profit) and will indeed become the biggest hit in the franchise. I'm just a petty, vindictive man who wants to see CR beat out the penguins because that site actually has the onions to take credit for HF's success and is insisting that CR is some kind of flop. I want to hear weeping and wailing and gnashing of teeth!

Hardy, it isn't like they will accept their defeat anyway. They obviously spin everything they can. Obviously CR has been an incredible success, and they say it was a flop. Even if it was number one, they'd find a way to make that seem bad. They will never admit being wrong.
I went to see a preview of the penguins today ( its not released here until 8th) and I was very surprised at how few people were there. It will be interesting to see how they fare on its proper release.
And for the record, there will be no second viewing of HF ( unlike CR ) and my daughter has no inclination to see the Nativity ( apparently she knows what happens ), so CR is certainly getting most of our cash. Good to see its still doing really well.
Its a good job Night At The Museum isn't out until after Christmas though ...
Naturally, we have all been focused on the amount of money that Casino Royale has been raking in, especially in the US.
What about attendances in the US, how are they faring at this stage compared to Pierce Brosnan's Bond films? I have no actual figures to hand, but according to BoxOfficeMojo CR attendances are ahead of GoldenEye at this stage, but behind the other three films. However, it is gaining on them (CR has stronger legs).
Money, money, money. . .here are the latest BOM figures: as of December 3, Casino Royale has earned $115,876,024 in that all-important U.S. market, making it the 18th most profitable movie in the last 365 days. CR's worldwide grosses are a whopping $311,451,307, more than double its reputed production costs, and making it the fourth most successful Bond film (so far). Go, baby, go!
The local Cineworld is still having 13 showings of CR a day almost 3 weeks after release so its obviously still doing well unlike a lot of films that are two week wonders (at least in sunny Yorkshire )

My sincere, fervent hope is that it surpasses them all---thus taking the financial success argument off the table, once and for all---putting the debate back where it belongs: Firmly in the realm of subjectivity, individual taste/preference, and creative differences B-)

Wonderful news, and in Italy we are waiting 5 jenuary 2007 for italian version!
Casino Royale smashed all the opposition for the third weekend in a row in the UK grossing £5.3 million (approx $10 million US). Overall, CR has grossed £37 million (approx $70 million US) which now makes it the second highest grossing film of the year behind Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest.
Time for a reality check, Bond movies box office adjusted for inflation. CR is not shown, but one can see the 60's movies will be hard to beat.
Not really--at $212 million, CR would be #3 on the list, behind Thunderball and Goldfinger adjusted for inflation.
I believe that the price adjusted rankings are those of domestic gross, and CR is around $116M right now.

So CR looks to finish up likely $130 or $140 or so, depending on its legs. That'd put it solidly in the middle, about where GE is now. Not a bad debut, again like Brosnan's first, and rarified company as debut Bonds go. Nice reality check, Barry, thanks.
Is there a link to the worldwide grosses, adjusted?

I can live in this reality {[] It'll be interesting to see where it ends up; but it's clearly becoming difficult to paint the film as anything other than a very, very solid success :007)

For the record, I believe CR has been a great success, not too many big hits this year and CR would be one of them. My point was, those Bond movies from the 60's were MONSTER hits, which will not be duplicated, for many reasons. However, I don't see any other franchise cranking out version 21 and filling cinemas. Although this current version of Bond may not be my ideal formula, I am happy that James Bond the character still resonates with the public. I know CR was very popular at my sons high school, even got a great write up in the high school paper. The future of Bond looks very secure.
EDIT - Found another chart on Wikipedia (great site) which shows box office numbers as well total admissions (including CR), which is probably the best number of all. Enjoy
I would only add that if all movies grosses were adjusted for inflation, I don't think there are many contemporary films that would score in the top 10. I would also add that many movies, like "Citizen Kane," never made a dime. So the box-office numbers have nothing to do with quality. The only resonance they have for me is that a money-maker means there will be a Bond 23, and that it will be more like CR than "Moonraker."
I thought I'd try something a little different today. Allegedly, Sony has said that they want CR to make "Spider-Man 2 numbers." Well, in 159 days of release, Spidey 2's international totals were $783,766,341. After 19 days of release, Spidey 2 had earned $302,287,882 internationally. The latest figures for CR have its take for its first 19 days as $313,600,782. Now, I don't know that CR will go on to earn another $470 million, but Sony can't be too disappointed with the returns so far!
How's it doing in Japan - does anyone know? I know that DAD was a disappointment compared with previous Bond films. Since the Land of the Rising Sun has always been one of the most loyal countries for Bond, I wondered if that was a one-off, or is it a trend?

According to BoxOfficeMojo, Casino Royale grossed $3.2 million from 443 screens during it's opening weekend in Japan. This figure is below DAD's opening, but I think it's too early to tell if it is a trend or not.
There's a sort-of interesting story at MTv News, in which a few of their "critics" (if they can be called that) all agree that there will be new Number One film this weekend, and it won't be either HF or CR. They seem to be torn between Mel Gibson's Apocalypto (one critic feels that the curiosity factor alone will be enough to turn it into a hit) and Leo DiCaprio's Blood Diamond; with The Holiday and some kids' movie emerging as favorites. So--can Bond withstand another weekend against the penguins, as well as Mayans, conflict diamonds, and Kate Winslet at a buffet line? (OK, that was mean.) We shall find out. . .
This is sort of a follow-up to my post about new films opening this weekend and the possibility that they'll overtake CR. Well, have a look at this hyperventilating (and spelling-challenged) headline I just encountered:
Daniel Craig thrice humiliated by the dynamic tap dancing penguins. Now the experts expect Casino Royale to be hurt badly this weekend by Blood Diamond and Apocolypto, and fall further behind Happy Feet.
Any guesses as to where I found this? New York Times online edition? Variety online? A fellow Bond site? RottenTomatoes? Anyone? Anyone. . .?
Oh, gawd. . .

It wouldn't start with a C, have an n in the middle, and end with a B would it?

Hardy, I think it's time to let CnB fade away. Those people have had their fifteen seconds of fame. Daniel Craig has been praised by virtually all the critics and has been accepted by a substantial majority of Bond fans. Casino Royale is a big critical and commercial success. Full stop.
Let them put whatever spin they like on the situation, it doesn't change the facts. If everyone would just ignore CnB it will soon fade away and disappear.

wow. This is not doing badly at all.

Tuesday's box office, according to BoxOfficeMojo:
Casino Royale grossed $1,112,818 - Overall US total $118,025,499
Happy Feet grossed $884,442 - Overall US total $123,212,756
I saw on another board, CR's final US box office is predicted somewhere between $150-165 mil, depending on how its legs turn out. Not too shabby.
(Funny how those legs keep getting longer, lol...)
