in terms of recasting an old actor for CR i would say Cec Linder as felix again (speaking in terms of if he was alive and if he looked like he did in goldfinger) he did a great joB Back in Goldfinger in which i thought was the Best version of felix

I thought the new Felix was cool. :)
Anyways, I dont know..CERTAINLY not Daniel Craig(I said it once, Ill say it again: BEST BOND SINCE CONNERY). To be honest, I would have LOVED to have seen Eva Longoria as Vesper. ;)

Mads did a fine job as Le Chiffre, but I think Jean Reno would have made him a classic villain.

I would have started with a new M for the simple reason that Dame Dench isn't going to be doing this forever. She did a nice job in the film, and I'm glad she was in it, but it would have been a good time to introduce a new M. My pick: Tom Wilkinson.

I really like Judi. But if she were to leave, I'd love to see Wilkinson in there. I was blown away by his performance (as an American) in "In the Bedroom." Like Judi, he would have to have something to do or he'd be wasted.

@Klaus: I didn't even think of that! Jean Reno as Chiffre! That would have been awesome! :)
And who's with me on thinking Eva Longoria would have been a great(not to mention hot) Vesper? ;) Oh, and don't start hating Eva Green. She did a fantastic job.

I don't think she's a very good actress. She's hot, for sure, but she looks very Latin, while the woman playing Vesper needs to have a definite Northern European appareance.

I have to say, Eva Longoria is a little to cliche to play the role of Vesper. I wasn't a big fan of Eva Green either though.Perhaps Natalie Portman?

i think jean reno would have beengood as le chrffre, its seems alot of peole would have liked to see him take on the role, but mads did do a fine job i think, he was quite scary in a way, also i liked white as felix, i just wanted him to have a bigger role. i would love to see a new m, there is someone i had in mind who would be excellent for he role but i cant remember the actors name, he played the police sargeant for a few years in the itv series heartbeat.

No, no, no, not Eva Longoria! The problem is, we think of her simply because she is in the public eye. Have you actually watched "Desparate Housewives"? She's not very good. People just think that she's pretty. Granted, sure, she is, but the latin influence means that even if you stick a pair of glasses on her, she'll just look like "hot latino in glasses". I'm not saying that I know who to recast Vesper as, but not Longo!

If said this before, but the only change would make is switching the role's Caterina and Eva,I thing Caterina would have made a better Vesper.

    Craig is awesome,Dench is awesome.

Hey, new user here, but a long time Bondian!

Let's see.... Craig was a surprisingly good Bond, I could see bits of Connery and Dalton. BUT I would recast Bond with someone younger and didn't look so much like a chimp (sorry) and with black hair. I'm not up on too many British actors, so I dunno. I wouldn't cast another Moore clone (like Brosnan was)...

Densch has had her day as M... actually, Patrick McNee would have made a good M (if he's still around, but probably too old) or Patrick Stewart! Or in a REAL coup, a Former Bond.. either Lazenby or Moore!

To me, Leiter was miscast. He had some presence, but he reminds me of Geoffrey the Butler from Fresh Prince! Someone tall, lanky and blonde should have played him... Maybe Paul Mark Groessler (Zack from Saved by the Bell) or Rick Schroeder. Yeah, Rick Schroeder!

Jean Reno would make a hell of a bad guy (I still remember him from "The Professional"), but he's pretty recognizeable, especially since he plays mostly bad guys.

Also, a major strike against him is that he was in "Mission: Impossible". Do you really want EON to go THERE?

All in all, I like the casting in CR. I wouldn't change a thing, except for giving Leiter a few more lines. I kinda liked him, and Jeffrey Wright is more interesting than the other stuffed suits that played Leiter in the past. The movies have never done him justice. The only Leiters that were somewhat interesting were Jack Lord in DN and whoever played him in TLD.

Granted she isn't going to be doing it forever but when I saw her at CR prem she looked amazing for over 70. She has a few years left in her I think.

Eva Longorina would have been a mistake. Vesper isn't the average Bond girl, it isn't enough to look hot. And that's all Eva is really good at.
Judi Dench was so good in CR, I can't bring myself to want to recast her. It was also neccesery to have a female M as a couterweight to Craig's Bond.
  • s96024s96024 Posts: 1,519MI6 Agent
Yea and she does a great job. Craig brings a bit of mischief to bond and the relationship between the two is great. She is almost like a mother figure.

Didn't care for Eva Green, not sure who I would have replaced her with, but not Eva either.

My dream casting probably would have had the young Diana Rigg as Vesper, but then I think I'd cast her as every Bond girl if I could! I wouldn't change anybody else- they were all perfect.

I thought Eva Green was perfect as Vesper - it's Mads Mikkleson I'd recast in a heartbeat. It wasn't just his own performance that I was disappointed with either - it was just as much what was done with the character in the film; portrayed is weak in many respects; leaving what I described in earlier threads as a 'forgettable' villain at best.

When Dame Judi retires as M the two actors who would make great (but very different) M's would be Bill Nighy or Hugh Laurie (odd one I know, but if you've ever seen him in Spooks as the MI6 liaison officer you'd know why he'd be brilliant as M)
  • OsatoOsato Aberdeen, ScotlandPosts: 99MI6 Agent
It would be typecasting, but the guy (sorry, forgot his name) who plays MI5 boss Harry in "Spooks" ("MI5" in U.S.) would make a great MI6 boss in a Bond film!

Jean Reno would have been great in CR - either as Le Chiffre, or howabout as Mathis? He can do that "can I trust this guy?" part so well.

(Mathis in the film reminded me of Topol's 'Colombo' in FYEO, one of my favourite "goodies").

Another actor who can do "sinister" very well is Arnold Vosloo - or would that be more like "James Bond Meets the Mummy"?!!

Peter Firth, I would go for that 2 he is brilliant in spooks.

No one in the principal cast -- this was the best cast in the best Bond film in years. But Le Chiffre's girlfriend still had that plastic, vampy look to her a lot of contemporary films prefer. I might recast her with someone less mannequin like.

It's not really recasting, but this is what they should do with the possision of M's secretary in the future. The secretary in CR was a man called Villiers. He did a fine job, but people want Moneypenny back. Why not let Villiers get his hands on some crucial information, but he gets killed before he can give it to M? Perhaps he gets the info from Bond and they try to kill 007 too, but fail? Then M must hire a new secretary, and the job goes to Moneypenny! This way they can incorporate the introduction of Moneypenny into the story, just like they did with Leiter in CR.

The problem with dreamcasting, in my opinion, is that more often than not, the names are bigger than the roles in which they fill. You have to split into two categories the kinds of people that work in movies. There's the name actors and the character actors. I believe it was a huge misstep to cast Halle Berry as a Bond girl given her heavy popularity, the same for Denise Richards. Beautiful people are a dime a dozen, so why not find someone that nobody has heard from before or isn't recognizeable from any one truly specific thing?

I think that Johnny Depp has the capacity to delivery something very good in the Bond universe because of is unwillingness to perform a stagnant, unchanging character. Many foreign stars get their big break with Bond films because of their lesser-known notoriety.

I think that the cast was as good as it should have been. I never believed for a second that anyone was acting. The terrorists looked to me like they truly wanted to blow stuff up with vacant persistence. Le Chiffre gave me shivers. I felt pity for Vesper even though every inch of me told me I shouldn't have.

And Danny boy, come on. He IS James Bond, no question in my mind at all.

I think that the problem with the next few films will be casting an appropriate Bond girl. If Keira Knightley appears in any of them then I will personally hunt down the casting people and present them with a gold plated dog turd. I hear her name bandied about so much and I just don't get it, especially in a Bond context. She isn't sexy or glamorous, two things that all Bond girls should be.

My vote goes to Sienna Guillory who I think would be perfect for the role. In terms of an older woman I always think that perhaps Alex Kingston would be a welcome addition to a Bond film. She has a real screen presence and would perhaps make a good villian of the piece.

I also think that Mark Heap would make a brilliant Q and maybe he is just unknown enough in the US and the rest of the world to be eligible ;).

I think any new Bond girl should a unknown so to speak,to put a allready famous woman there takes away from the movie,One of the problems DAD.

    Eva Longoria
    Keira Knightley
    Britany Spears

    all no no's

I don't know about whom I would replace them with, but I would definitely replace Eva Green and Judy Dench. I would replace Green because IMO she was a real weak link and Dench because, although she was very good, I don't think she should have been hired in the first place. I always considered her casting to be a mistake if CR was a genuinely intended as a reboot.

As for Craig, well I would have loved for Brosnan to have done it, and I would have much preferred Owen or Bale, but I'll keep him as he didn't do such a bad job. ;) (I don't think he was wonderful, but I wasn't nearly as disappointed with him as I feared.)

And when they start not smiling back—that’s an earthquake. and then you get yourself a couple of spots on your hat, and you’re finished. Nobody dast blame this man. A salesman is got to dream, boy. It comes with the territory." Death of a Salesman

I don't see Eva Green as a real weak link. She's a worthy Vesper Lynd. The only real problem I had regards Green as Lynd was the way she was talking to Bond in the train scene. Most notably where she is working out his background. It's hard to explain, but she just sounded weird to me.

Before Green was cast I was all in favour of Rose Byrne when she was rumoured to be in the running. I really think she looked the part, but I am not certain she would have acted the part any better than Green did.

As for Judi Dench. Originally, I was not happy at all with her casting. My opinion was that if Eon are doing a re-boot then do it properly, not half-arsed. When it actually came to watching Casino Royale her appearance as M did not bother me in the slightest. After all, if I can accept Charles Gray and Maud Adams (amongst others) as two seperate characters then it doesn't take a great leap of faith to accept Judi Dench as M in CR. Continuity has hardly been a strong suit throughout the Bond films.

I really really don't understand the Clive Owen thing. IMHO - and that's all it is btw - he has zero screen presence and is a confusing mix of slick and woolly if that makes sense at all??

Bale, well maybe on principle and track record but again, I don't think that he has the gravitas (maybe Britishness ?:))) that it would have taken to carry the script that I think DC pulled off particularly well.

I'm far from a Brosnan fan, whether as JB or otherwise and I think his best ever film was the Thomas Crown Affair. Of the main contenders I don't envisage that any of them could have made CR as DC has made it but then I don't find it hackneyed, cheesy, poor or majorly lacking as some folks do.

I just wish Eva Green had sorted out which accent she was going to use all the way through the film :))

I think Dame Judi Dench did a good job, but i'm still confused as may of you for her role... I support the idea of giving Hugh Laurie a chance (he might be a great M, not Bernard Lee, but he hi the man for me. (Tom Wilkinson is "nicer" - a minus- )

Vesper is more than Fine, i like the Jennifer Connelly name (she is gorgeous as well)

Leiter: you can put George Clooney, Brad Pitt (wtf, all ocean's eleven), Geoffrey Rush, Al Pachino, Robert de Niro, a young Marlon Brando or Clint Eastwood, Humprey Bogard, Even David Niven... but really, does this Leiter (the character, not the actor) anything important? i mean he would be more interesting if he had smoke (at least he does something controversial)

Pierce in the first 007 assignment...

Clive Owen probably has better looks than Craig, but i really prefer him after i saw it.
