Lt. Hip

One thing I have always wondered about TMWTGG is why do Hip and his nieces leave Bond in the dust when driving away from the Karate School? He could have waited another two-three seconds, and been able to take Bond with him. In fact Bond is tring to et into the car still when Hip drives off. Even the girls tell him to stop, but he just drives off, grinning. Never understood that. With the 'deadly schoolgirls' from moments earlier, a very poor scene indeed, spoiling the well staged 'Karate School' sequence.

Any ideas as to why Hip leaves Bond behind?

Crawfordboon, you are referring to what I consider to be perhaps the single worst moment in the history of the series.

No matter how many times i have watched TMWTGG (which is a guilty pleasure) I cringe at the image of 007 running after Hip's car.

From any and every angle it really is one of the lamest moments ever. What was Lt.Hip (and the film-makers) thinking of?

It's because they had the script written with Bond escaping from the karate school and heading for the klongs, then at the last minute decided to insert some non-comedy antics involving schoolgirls. So having introduced Hip, they had to get rid of him again. Though of course that's not what you're asking!

I think the idea is that Hip thinks Bond is in the car (if you look Bond lets the girls get in, then closes the door to run round to the other side - what a gentleman). Why Hip thinks this, when he clearly looks over his shoulder to where the girls are sat, is a mystery. He's definitely not sitting with them, so maybe he thinks Bond is lying on the floor of the car. Hmmm, two teenage girls, 007's reputation... perhaps that's not such a bizarre thought after all :o

If you include the karate girl fight scene along with Lt Hip's brain fade then it's definitely one of the single worst moments in the Bond series. Definitely the low point of TMWTGG, but still overall a better film than it's reputation.

Another element in GG that made no sense was the fight in Beirut. Bond is having a drink, watching Saida, and those hoods just take a dislike to him, apparently. Then they attack him in the dressing room, but quite why is never explained. Perhaps the film was just showing us the rough and tumble of the life of a secret agent, having to hang out in tough joints a lot....

Why would two girls using martial arts to fight other guys make the scene so bad?

I agree with you Fish. I actually like the scene. I thought it was a good gag. After Bond says "Stand back girls" and they step forward in fighting stance, the look on Moore's face is priceless! :)) I don't know why some fans have a problem with Bond being "saved" by some teenage girls. It isn't any different than Domino shooting Largo with a harpoon.

I don't have a huge problem with it (providing the teenage girls can actually fight) but I can see why *some people would use it as evidence that Moore wasn't a tough Bond. :#

*I am NOT one of these people as I consider Moore to have been an extremely tough and amazingly physical Bond.

The big difference is that when Domino kills Largo, it's done with serious motivation. When the karate girls save Roger Moore, it's an obvious attempt at supposed humor. Having a woman save Bond happens a lot. Tanya, Pussy, Domino all helped save his life or complete the mission. But they weren't the farce that TMWTGG was.

If Hip had not driven away, the karate students would have gotten to the car. If Bond had gotten in the car, there would have been no boat chase, and no Pepper. It is not much of a boat chase, but a little more action doesn't hurt, unless the Bond film title is "Tomorrow Never Dies."

Okay, it was a farce. But what's the big deal? Whether the scenes were played as a farce or seriously, Bond has had his life saved by females before.[/quote]

Gee, if you bothered to read my post, you would have noticed that I said that women had saved Bond before, and you would not have had to repeat the same observation. Maybe you're more of a parrot than a Fish.:) I have no problem with the women saving his life. I have a problem with the character of James Bond being a made into a comedic figure. And having the two teenage girls save Roger Moore certainly reduced him in stature, don't you think?

But Bond (or "Roger Moore", if you must call him that) was all but ready to kick serious hiney, when the girls showed up completely unrequested. They were an answer to a question no-one asked, simple as that.

Exactly. If Sean Connery could take on a whole army on the rooftops of Kobe Docks, so could Roger! :p I understand that the humor of the Roger Moore Era is not every Bond fan's cup of tea, but if the teapot is going around you can fill my glass! {[]

As for the humor during the Moore Era . . . blame Sean Connery. That type of humor was first introduced while he was playing Bond. For some reason, people seemed to forget this.

James Bond was ridiculous from the start. Dr. No had the dragon on diesel engines and that stupid control room. There is Goldfinger's plan to make U.S. gold radioactive for 58 years, Oddjob's bowlerhat, the crazy aston martin, Thunderball's underwater battle scene, and You Only Live Twice's plot which is totally silly with SPECTRE's rocket swallowing up U.S. and Soviet space capsules and taking them down into a hollowed out volcano. Then there is Blofeld's bacteriological warfare plan in OHMSS, and DAF's lazer satellite, moon machine chase, and cloned Blofeld.

The Bond films of course remained silly during the Moore period with the karate chopping school girls in TMWTGG, Moonraker's lazer battle fight, and Stromberg's plan to create an underwater city in TSWLM.

Other than a few times where the Bond films got serious such as FRWL, LTK, and CR, most Bond movies are silly which include the Connery films and even OHMSS.

Personally, I will take karate chopping school girls over Blofeld teaching Ruby to love chickens any day.

No, I don't. It was simply a funny moment . . . and nothing else to me. It wasn't the first time Bond was shown as a comic figure. And this has happened even during the Connery Era. I just don't see any reason for raising a fuss about it.
Apart from that scene in TMWTGG, I don't think Bond was ever shown as a comic figure. I particularly don't think he was shown as a comic figure in the Connery films. The reason why I would make such a fuss about it is that in my view, the depiction of Bond as a comic figure is something that doesn't happen often and is greatly unappreciated by me.

Well, apart from that scene in TMWTGG, I loved much of the humour in the Moore era, so I will thank Connery for that. :D
