Can't get to work, poor vis, everyone drvin slow, severe weather warning - well in Mids anyway - all schools closed.

Any 1 else in Uk affected?

A little bit in Hampshire, schools are closed but we only had about 6cm, which is nothing apart from the fact that it is pretty hilly and many of thte roads are awkward. I'll be going into work a little later today.

Haven't been out yet but looks to be about 3 or 4 inches here in Cannock.

) had about ten people text me that this morning lol. My dad says he isn't going to work cus he has to drive for most of his job and he only had one customer to see today anyway. Dunno about my mom yet but probably not. So we're all home today and the snow's still falling.

West central Scotland is sunny and dry. It is bitterly cold though, and my car was recording an outside temperature of -5C this morning.

With any luck we'll manage to avoid it, the major works under way on the M8 at Glasgow Airport are already adding 20 minutes onto my journey. The smattering we had a couple of weeks ago brought the roads to a standstill, don't fancy any more.

Living now in the American heartland, we've had more than our fair share of lousy weather. A blizzard last November and an ice storm last month, both of which left me trapped in my house. Nothing like four inches of solid ice on the driveway to keep you at home! Ah, well, at least I had heat, cable TV, and the Net. . .

It was just a few weeks ago that we had a blanket of snow fall here in Tucson. Got a few inches here at the house, and lots of ice. It's only a little bit compared to what others are used to, but it effectively shut down the city for the morning. Being a desert city, local government simply doesn't have the resources to de-ice the bridges and streets. Oh well...the Arizona sun had everything melted, thawed, and back to normal by the afternoon.

Woke up to a blanket of snow this morning. The advice from the media was to stay at home and only make journey's if they were absolutely necessary. That was all the excuse I needed not to go to work. The snow contined to fall until well after midday.

Snow is pretty rare in my part of England, a couple of times a year on average over the last decade. Today's five/six inch blanket is the most I can remember in that time.

Snow in Tucson? Wow. I know in my neck of the woods it's never snowed. It has been cold enough, but as soon as we get cloud cover it traps in the heat. It's pathetic how this country snarls to a halt in the slightest of incliment weather. More than 1cm of snow? Roads are gridlocked and the trains don't work. Too hot? Of course, the trains don't work anyway, they don't need weather as an excuse.

Not that he's a man I'd agree with often, but Jack Straw made this oh so true statement in the Commons today:

"It is extremely important we upgrade our efforts all the time to defy the weather which after all, not withstanding a day's snow, is much more moderate than many other countries who frankly are able to cope a bit better."

Continental Europe can deal with heat waves and cold snaps, why can't we?

We just had a 5 day period where the temperature stayed below zero the whole time. People here adapt to it, but we still have a the people driving extremely slow and man is it stressful, these people can be found everywhere.

What is the point in the government spending millions upgrading our gritting/ploughing resources if we have snow 1 or 2 days a year. Other countries have these conditions for weeks if not months, in there cases it's cost effective. On the issue of roads most need to be made thicker and wider. Which not only would cost millions but loads of people would be moaning about the extra space they take. The main problem is the workers are lazy c***s and it takes them a month just to resurface a small road.

Because parts of this country do get snow several weeks of the year, because everytime it happens it catches us by surprise, and that yesterday alone cost the UK economy £124m just in absenteeism - not lost work/business or the costs of closed schools, closed airports, cancelled flights and trains and the overtime of existing transport employees trying to keep the system going. Simply because a day of gridlock costs the economy hundreds of millions of pounds, several days or weeks costs billions.

I'd say a short term high investment is worth the long term savings.

More snow today yet I was back at school. I woke about 5 to see more snow than yesterday and thought I'd get a nice lie in. I was woken two hours later to find I would not. Never mind - nobody did much at school except snowball fighting. I got our deputy head good and proper on the back of the head. :v
I don't see what all the fuss is about really when there is much mroe snow in other areas of the world. But I won't say no to a day off school.

It wasn't the fact that the roads were unusuable. I was in one of the worst areas down here and the roads were fine. It was the fact lots of schools were closed and that's the reason many people had to take the day of. This was generally down to schools thinking it was too dangerous for kids to walk or be driven to school. Just like they can't play conkers/ throw paper aeroplanes or snowballs. It's the mindset of people in this country and our compensation culture. I blame Brussels.

Ten inches on the ground in Central Illinois, and more on the way, driven by 30 to 40 mph winds...I was supposed to work until 10 PM, but got off at 3 when they closed us down.

Police are telling everyone to stay off the roads, and that's good enough for me...

Greetings from Springfield, IL.

Despite the weather, my university was persistent in holding classes this morning. I thought it was a rather surprising move on the part of the school officials since a large portion of our student body commutes. Sure enough, I stumbled out of my on-campus apartment and walked through the blizzard to get to my 10:00 a.m. class, when the school finally decalred it a "Snow Day." Better late than never I guess. The weather has calmed down a little now, but there is a slim chance that tomorrow's classes will be cancelled also, not that I'm complaining.

Reports from Chicago (my real home) seem to say the same thing. My high school brother and sister were pleased to have also received a "Snow Day" today!

To all my Illinoian friends,

Keep warm and be safe. Don't go out unless you have to!
