BAFTA Awards Ceremony

The BAFTA Awards Ceremony is due to begin in less than three hours from now. As we all know, Casino Royale has received nine nominations including Daniel Craig as Best Actor.

If I can find a link for live coverage of the ceremony I will post it later. In the meantime, here is a Sky News interview with DC as he arrived at the venue.

"Whatever happens tonight, win or lose, we're in a good position."

It's become a cliche, of course...but the mere fact that Craig and CR have received this many nominations is a great thing...but with such competition as Forrest Whitaker, etc., in the race, we might well have to take what satisfaction we can...

Still and all, I'm hoping for the best. Either way, hopefully a defining moment for the New Era :007)

Receiving nine nominations is something of a defining moment for the New Era.

I am also hoping for the best. I am not expecting DC to win, but Eva Green is favourite to win the Rising Star Award and Casino Royale is the favourite in the Adapted Screenplay category. So, two or three awards from the nine nominations is a distinct possibility.

I will certainly be doing my best, Loeff's. And I am still hoping that I will be able to provide a live link to the awards ceremony itself.

The BBC is currently broadcasting the BAFTA Awards Ceremony, but the winners have already been announced.

Casino Royale has won two BAFTA's. Eva Green has won the Orange Rising Star Award and the other award is for Sound (Chris Munro, Eddy Joseph, Mike Prestwood Smith, Martin Cantwell, Mark Taylor).

The full list of winners and nominees can be found at the link below.

Great to see Eva Green win the rising star award. She's clearly very talented, and I'm sure she has a great career ahead of her.

Congrats to Eva. She does love those crazy hairstyles though. :D Also delighted to see Paul Greengrass picking up an award for 'United 93.' Remarkable film, I thought.

Ever see There's Something About Mary?

But, anyway, congrats to Eva, and sorry to Dan--though I don't think anyone was surprised by Forest Whitaker's win. Just curious: are the BAFTAs as shamelessly promoted in Britain as the Oscars are here? In other words, will every Craig film that's released in the UK be advertised as starring "BAFTA Nominee Daniel Craig"?

Nah, they try to hype the BAFTA's, but they're not that big a deal. They've moved the date so that they now arrive before the Oscars, but the Academy Awards remains the premier ceremony.

Congratulations to Eva Green and the CR sound effects team! I think some of us set our hopes up way too high for Casino Royale and Daniel Craig. The BAFTAs have proven once again that the Bond films will never get the recognition they deserve. It doesn't really matter though, I take the distribution of awards with a grain of salt. The Bond films will always be winners in my book! {[]

Just to point out, the Orange Rising Star award is actually voted for by Joe Public; not the academy.

Daniel Craig and James Bond were name checked several times through the ceremony though, just in general reference rather than categories they were up for. A new level of acceptance seems to have descended. Let's hope it stays!

I think in reality, CR was up against some very tough fellow nominees ... DC especially. Forest Whitaker was simply mind-blowing in the Last King of Scotland.

And out of all of the winners, I was most confused by Eva Green's win, up against some really talented fellow newcomers as she was.

Well, the thing about Whitaker's win was that he got best Male Lead, whereas James McAvoy was nominated for best supporting. Bear in mind that Last King of Scotland is all about McAvoy's character and his meeting Amin, and pretty much every scene stars McAvoy- Whitaker on the other hand appears much less often. Which is the lead and which is the support?

Not really- there's a bit of talk but it all dies down quite quickly.

On the other hand- how are the BAFTAs regarded over there? I'm sure they get reported on, but much? Are there any other foreign award ceremonies like them or do they just get ignored?

That's one of the (many) problems with awards ceremonies: how do you determine who supports whom? I can't remember if it was Richard Burton or Sean Connery who said that, when you look at it, Macbeth can be considered a supporting character because he supports Lady Macbeth! And it's a problem with the Oscars, as well. I think anyone who saw Syriana would say that the central character in that movie was George Clooney's character, yet he won Best Supporting Actor! Go figure.

As for how the BAFTAs are perceived in the U.S., well, I'm sure the reaction of most Americans would be, "The whats?" I haven't seen a bit of press coverage, and the situation isn't helped by the fact that the Grammy awards were last night. Just this morning alone I saw more of Mary J. Blige and the Dixie Chicks than I have in a year!

Gotta say that Dame Judi's Oscar was a bit rubbish, a seven-minute cameo in Carry On Shakespeare, phoned in, playing the same character that Cate Blanchett got unjustly overlooked for in Elizabeth... then Cate gets it for a Dead Ringers impersonation of Katherine Hepburn... that's the thing, they may give it to O'Toole this year then have to compensate by giving one to Whitaker the next time round, so snubbing a better performance by another guy, it just goes on! 8-)

The fact that Dench got the Oscar for Shakespeare In Love is indeed a joke, but I disagree with you about Blanchett. I thought she was superb in The Aviator and IMO it was a highly deserved Oscar. ;)

Yes; that's true- I saw that reported on the news last night and thought the guys who planned the BAFTA ceremony must've been insane to plan their ceremony at the same time as the Grammys.

Fair enough; although over here we do occasionally get shows where Americans are asked stuff in the street regarding the rest of the world and get terrifying answers like thinking 'Europe is in Asia'! :o ;)
There was a fantastic bit on our car show Top Gear last night where the presenters literally almost got killed in Alabama for having slogans like 'Country & western is rubbish', 'Hilary for President' and 'Man-love rules OK' written on the side of their cars! Needless to say, they reconsidered the bet sharpish! (I'm not saying it's all like that in the US- just that it sort of links up in my tiny mind!)

Top gear was brilliant last night. Clarksons comment about Americans mating with vegetables maybe went a little too far, but they were having rocks thrown at them :)). Although on the other hand there are as equally pathetic scum in this country.

It happens all the time (pun not intended ;%); Hannibal Lecter is onscreen for 16 minutes in Silence Of The Lambs, and Anthony Hopkins took home a Leading Actor Oscar.
