Should I Be Ashamed Because I'm A Bond Fan?

scottmu65scottmu65 Carlisle, Cumbria, UKPosts: 402MI6 Agent
Ok so I went into college today and as I entered the classroom some of the other students started singing the James Bond theme tune at me, as it turned out they had found my Profile on Youtube and viewed my videos, and most of them were my attempts at making my own bond gunbarrel with me as bond, They seemed to think this was really sad of me, and thought it was geeky. For me this was humiliating, I was ashamed. As soon as I got back home for my lunch break I deleted most of my videos on youtube, well the ones of me in the gunbarrel.

Now m question is should I have deleted these videos just because a couple of other people thought I was geeky for liking James Bond? Should I be ashmed because i'm a Bond fan?

I'd really like to know your opinions on this, or if any of you have found yourselfs in similar situations then I would like to know about them and how you went about the situation.

I look forward to your input.

Whats this? Did you say "shame"?

Scottmu65...not for ONE single, solitary, sub-atomic moment should you feel ashamed!

My friend, I don't know your "friends", but i'll tell you this. Maybe they should all take a closer look at themselves in the mirror before they open their big ignorant yaps.

I will GUARANTEE you that there is a Star Wars or Star Trek fanatic in the bunch...or a Hulk Hogan fan...or a fan of Buffy...Justin Timberlake...J-Lo...or whoever is the flavor of the month.

My point being is that each one of these people is a fan of something that they would not have the GUTS to reveal to ANYONE...let alone Youtube!

Pardon my anger, but anyone who ridicules another man's hobby is absolutely, and without question. PATHETIC!!! One more time for the cheap seats: P-A-T-H-E-T-I-C!!!!!!!!

Not only should you NOT feel ashamed, Scott, you should revel in the fact that you are the fan of the greatest hero in pop-culture history...and in terms of general fan-dom...Bond fans are the cream of the crop.

Tell those bums in your class that you are a proud Bond-fan. There is NOTHING to be be ashamed about in liking 007, my friend.

What is truly pathetic is seeing a bunch of desperate, loser hipsters make fun of a man's hobby. Those bums laugh it up but, you know what, Scott? At the end of the day...thats all they got...hollow laughter.

You? You have a 50-year history (and counting) of the greatest hero in the movies to enjoy...and millions of fellow Bond-fans to share it with.

So don't let a couple of haters get in the way of your enjoyment.

Making a gunbarrel is geeky to those bums? Give me a break. ANY and all attempts at fan-art is a worthy effort, Scott, and should NEVER be mocked.

To answer your question. should you be ashamed to be a Bond-fan?

    No..NO!...NO!!! NEVER!!!!!!! End of discussion.

I'm with bigzilcho on that one, scottmu65! EVERYONE enjoys something in their spare time...whether it's sports, movies, games, dancing. The fact that you have a talent and and apply it to something you really enjoy puts you heads above other people whose only idea of a hobby is wearing a jersey with a number on it and shouting at the game on television IMO.

If the other students knew the theme, what does that make them, closet fans? So forget them, make some new and even cooler gun barrels. Appropriate some friends to help with the pose.

    That's my humble advice. ;)

In the face of ridicule, I simply start rattling off amazing trivia...stuff that makes them wide eyed with a mix of rage and jelousy. you should put those videos back up on youtube and consider it an honor to enter a room to that song. Bond fan are the best, and everyone just wishes that they were as cool as we are! {[]

yes, you should go to class in a tux...it would be AMAZING!

It's very easy to say and hear, "don't be ashamed", but it's another thing to actually feel that way. Your gut reaction was one of complete embarrassment that stayed with you till you got home and ripped those videos off YouTube. Even with all of us saying to you not to be embarrassed, if it happens a second time you'll still feel that pang of shame - that somehow you're not conforming. And therein lies the real problem; it's nothing to do with being a Bond fan and everything to do with being "the norm", the person who doesn't stick out from the crowd or attract any attention. Not many people like it, you're certainly not on your own, hence the whole idea that a "norm" exists. It doesn't. It's an illusion, one created to make folk think they're really no different to anyone else. And where's the fun in that?

Don't be ashamed or embarrassed about anything to do with who you are. It takes a bit of practice; no one adopts a "fvck it" attitude overnight, but as said earlier in this thread - play up to it and into it and that horrible feeling in your stomach at being singled out fades at each turn. That doesn't mean becoming the life and soul (and mouth) of the room, but any form of mocking doesn't stick to a proud person and very quickly the people around you will get to know that.

My self confidence was smashed through the final years of High School thanks to a select few who decided they would do their best to make my life hell. My hangover from those days lasted way longer than I should've let it. But now I couldn't give a toss what folk think, to be honest. The strength to build that last layer of confidence back up came courtesy of a few close friends.

There's the harmless ribbing that your friends will dish out and that you learn to laugh along with, and there's the stuff that's deliberately aimed at undermining you and hurting you, from the people who want to believe you're a loser. Your friends and family won't think any less of you for what you are or aren't interested in, and no one else's opinion matters.

Go put your videos back on YouTube. B-)

Was it ridicule, though? It could have been that people were giving you a good-natured ribbing. And look at it this way: you're known. Back in my undergrad days, I could walk into a classroom and hardly anyone would know I was there! Stand proud, fellow 007 geek!

Breaking ranks here, but making videos of yourself as Bond doing the gun barrel is a bit geeky imo :p but there you go. Better rejig some scenes with other music, like JFF, or reshoot scenes that you like or something...

The problem with being a Bond fan is that, unlike Star Wars, there's the major discrepancy between his life and ours. No one expects us to be flying a Millennium Falcon etc, but there is an obvious chasm between the av Bond fan's lifestyle and their hero that does stand out a bit.

Still think you should turn up at lectures wearing a tux, if you've got the balls to laugh it off...

Since you're in college, Scott, I'll assume you'll fairly young, so look at it this way: It's just one more embarassing moment out of the way on the road to not giving a f***, which is a destination you will inevitably reach as you get older. As a now 52-year-old guy who posts on a James Bond blog, and has told his middle-age friends that he does (their response: *yawn*), I'm living proof of that.
But I am curious as to why a bunch of college-age people would tease a classmate. I was much too cool to do something like that when I was in college. Are they third-graders on an early admission or something?

What good are they going to do for you, are they going to help pay your bills, feed your family, help you out in any way besides cheating off a test or hazing a new plebe? Heck no! So why the hell should you worry about dill hole number 12's comment?

James Bond fans are among the most intelligent and erudite of all fan communities :007)

I've experienced my share of sneers from Philistines, but long ago learnt to place the proper value upon it---something less than what I left behind after this morning's constitutional B-)

    The other posters in this thread are absolutely correct. Everyone is a fan of something---whether it's Christopher Lowell/interior decorating...Star Wars/Trek...LOTR...D&D...comic books...NASCAR...Football (both kinds ;) )...the Food Network...crochet...model railroading...Beanie Babies...Hummels...Jimmy Buffett/Parrotheads...Grateful Deadheads...et al...ad infinitum...

Ebay would curl up and die without these diverse pop-subcultures ;)

Of all these, though, I'd rather surround myself with James Bond fans.

scottmu65, I recommend you wear your Bond fandom as a badge of identity and honour...and restore the gunbarrels to your YouTube profile.

Although I've never done any fan art or video work like you're referring to, I really sympathized for you while reading your post. I think we've all been there at one point or another in our lives, Bond fandom related or not. :D

See here's where your years of Bond fandom could have paid off with a perfect quip or comeback like Moore's Bond would have concocted, or straightened your "tie" like Brosnan in TWINE (yeah, I say that, but let's face it we're not Bond, and hindsight is 20/20).

Don't let it get you down, anyways, if these fellow classmates of yours are so cool then what are they all doing on YouTube looking for your profile anyways? At least you've got something better to be doing like posting here or expressing yourself through your fan art.

I'd just like to tell you that this is coming from a Yank who looks at your CR wallpaper on his computer daily, so keep up the good work!

PS- I would pay good money to have people sing the Bond theme when I enter a room. B-)

Dont worry, im nearly 30 ( and my hair is nearly totally grey)I still get embarrased going to stores or cinemas asking for instore promotional material ( posters/standees) cause i have to walk through the shopping centre with it wondering what ppl will think, but at the end of the day i say f**k it, it's is my hobby, and NOTHING will get in the way of that.

Its a small moment of embarrasment, for a lifetime of pleasure. Ive learned as you get older, life is for you , and if collecting Bond ( as i do ) or creating Bond gun barrels gives you a satisfaction ,happiness or contentment in your life, then carry on. Maybe we should create bracelets that state WWBD?

You should not feel ashamed. In no way, shape or form. Absolutely not.

You should feel sorry for these people. People who will ridicule someone for being who they are or what they like to do usually are not thinking for themselves. They call you a geek because thats what they have been programmed to beleive a geek is, by the media no less.

These people, i'm willing to bet, have not taken the time to really form an opinion of what you are doing. They will have all formed an instant opinion. Probably because they have nothing better to do.

You should ask them why it's geeky? Maybe one to one, not infront of the group. Then let them come up with an answer. They will probably say what they originally said, that 'it's sad' thats not a real answer, push them for a real one and watch them squirm trying to come up with something. They may just say they were messing around. If they say something constructive, take it on board, but i'll bet my life savings they can't come up with anything solid.

Stick to your guns, you ARE a Bond fan. Don't let anyone beat you down because of that.

Stand proud next time you see them, walk tall and don't let them get to you.

And don't delete your videos, you should make more!
