Agreed. I'm quite amazed at the amount of love it gets around here.
I am amazed that LTD survived beyond the first few reounds of eliminations. :o :#

    1. From Russia With Love [22]
    2. Goldfinger [22]
    3. Thunderball [11]
    4. On Her Majesty's Secret Service [18]
    5. The Spy Who Loved Me [7]+1= 8
    6. The Living Daylights [17]-1= 16
    7. Casino Royale [12]

Two comments: While I am disappointed that YOLT, LALD, FYEO, OP, GE and TWINE have been eliminated, I am not surprised as I am painfully aware that they are not among the absolute most popular films on this site. However, I am astounded that DN has been eliminated. I thought that it was considered by most people to be a classic. :'(

Also, I am now going to do everything within my power to save the masterpiece known as TSWLM!

Interestingly enough, the main culprit, JSW, isn't a kid! :D

    No, I have to say that it really surprises me. It is true that, generally speaking, DN tends to be overshadowed by FRWL/GF/TB, but IMO DN remains a true Bond masterpiece. -{

Having just watched it (or tried to) last night, I totally agree. My biggest gripe is that, try as I might, I just can't accept Timothy Dalton as Bond. I've gone on enough about this lately, so I won't elaborate. It didn't help Dalton's case, though, that the makers of this film still had one foot stuck in the Moore era-- something entirely at odds with Dalton's whole approach to the character. Another criticism I have is that I found the girl very bland. On the awesome side, though, was Barry's excellent soundtrack-- the track that played during Nekros' "milkman" attack stands out to me as one of the most exciting songs of the whole series (that whole scene was really well executed and awesome).
However, I am astounded that DN has been eliminated.

Having just watched it tonight, I am too. There is a lot that can be griped about with Dr. No-- the music wasn't up to the par of subsequent movies, the budget was really low, the special effects weren't that good, and so on. All of those things, though, are made up for by the awesomeness that was Sean Connery. Relative to the rest of the movies not a lot happens in Dr. No-- it is very straightforward and simple-- but none of that matters. The makers of the movie found a young man who had an incredible magnetism and screen presence that was able to keep audiences rapt with more attention on him than what was going on around him. Watching Dr. No 45 years later and I hardly noticed the poor special effects or the other consequences of the low budget-- I was completely absorbed in Connery's portrayal of Bond. To me the measure of a Bond actor is the degree to which they can convince me that they are what they are pretending to be on screen-- namely tough, resourceful, irresistible to women, and so forth. Dr. No was a great success and I believe that much of it belongs on the shoulders of that man who set the bar so high that it took 44 years to even come close to matching. (Lazenby could have gotten there, if he had kept going.)

TLD should go next; I agree with that much-- but it's Roger's turn right afterwards.

After the Moore era, Dalton's Bond was a godsend. And the change from Moore is one of the things that make TLD a gem. (I have elaborated on what I believe to be the other intrinsic merits of the film in this as well as other threads, so I won't bore you). I'll just add that I couldn't agree more about the music and the use of the "Where has everybody gone" theme.

As for DN, it is indeed a classic. But unlike FRWL, tends to be a little boring at some points. Sean Connery, while great in the role, had not yet gained the kind of confidence that he would show in FRWL and GF.

I disagree with you about Lazenby (my second least favourite Bond) and Craig (my third least favourite Bond) but at least we agree on how great DN was. {[]

Boring? :o How can a film, in which he romances several beautiful women, engages ina few great car chases, escape a 'dragon', meet and dine with Dr. No, kill Dr. No and escape an expolosion be boring? ;)

TB goes into single digits! Come on people, think about it - what would you rather watch? Enormous supertankers exploding around nuclear submarines, or someone getting their airhose cut underwater for the 800th time?

It is getting more difficult for me, I admit; but if it was a rainy afternoon, TB is bottom of the list of DVDs I would put on to pass the time. All that underwater stuff just goes on forever...

I meant 800 times in the same bleeding film! I'm not a blood thirsty sort, but really; you've got a knife! Stab him! Cut him! Just get off the air hose; I'm bored of that! :D

You see I actually find all that stuff underwater rather exciting; I prefer Thunderball to Goldfinger. :o A fun, exotic and effortlessly cool Bond picture that I would put on during a rainy day to combat our dreary weather. And Claudine Auger still looks incredible in that bikini. . .

I'll have a go at this as Casino Royale is my favourite Bond picture (for reasons detailed in the middle of this page, he says self-promotingly), having overtaken my former favourite OHMSS.
